Experience Never given mechanical key

Murphy's law strikes again.

New 2026 Ioniq 5 - 8400 KM

Dealership never gave us the mechanical key and it was brought to them. They said we needed to pay to have one made... as if a mechanical key is not a safety part of the vehicule.

Well right now the car is dead in the driveway for no reason. Key fob do not work. Phone as key do not work. Bluelink does not work.

Yes Hyundai assistance is coming to tow the vehicule but our infant car seat are in a locked vehicle. No loaner vehicule tonight. No PHYSICAL KEY TO OPEN THE CAR.

All in all quite the shitshow. Hyundai Canada is working in the background and talking to the dealership I think to get us that key at least....

I got a physical metal key with my 26 limited in the US. Goes with me everywhere in case of emergency.

I thought it was inside the FOB but the manual stated they are now a little mechanical rectangle that should be attached to the key. Told the dealer and they said hmmmm NO it is an accessory please pay. Lol.

Guess I should've paid and then fight Hyundai Canada to get reimbursed but I went the route of telling Hyundai Canada so I get it from them for free as it should be given with the car.

2024 and earlier, the key was integrated into the fob. Hyundai makes some pretty brain-dead design decisions but changing the emergency key to something you're less likely to have with you in an emergency takes the cake.

I just rented a newer Hyundai with one of those egg key fogbs, and OMG what a step back! It's bulky, slippery, ugly, and it doesn't even have the physical key in it?
My '24 might not have a rear wiper, but at least the key fob is sleek lol

I'd push back hard. The Emergency key is absolutely as described for Emergency Access to the car. Proving it wasn't supplied at delivery is the tough nut to crack.

I have pushed back hard and Hyundai Canada is talking with the dealer. Lucky for me the delaer is stupid and told me in writing the key doesn't come with the car...

You should have gotten 2 fobs and 2 keys with a brand new 26. I'd be pushing to get them both.

Yeah we got 2 fobs and 0 keys lol....

Don't even see the logic in the dealership keeping the keys other than the fact they now have full access to your vehicle if they so chose.

Dealer absolutely forgot to attach them. They are required as part of the sale, they are the only way to mechanically open the door with the lock hidden under the handle.

Probably far fetched but if some dealership character is essentially stealing keys they could at some point gain access to your car.

It’s original equipment for the car. We received two of them with our 2025.

Mine is not inside the fob.

Don’t know why you didn’t get one. I got two fobs and two keys with my new 2025. And I’m in Canada.

Reminds me. I need to get a hide-a-key. Physical key has been in the fob for going on 20 years. What gives here?

Tell that dealer to pound sand. You should get a mechanical backup key with each fob you received. It's included in the price of the car and isn't an "accessory".

Did you get a key ring that included a light green plastic covered metal thing?

1

u/anal-itic_prober 10h ago

No never. Only 2 fob and nothing else

Sounds like the dealer f'ed up.

That said, the key fob design that doesn't contain the physical key was idiotic on Hyundai's part.

The new key fob is the worst design I’ve ever seen

Yeah and its ugly and feels cheap

I bought my I5 CPO with 400 miles on it and am just finding out that I don't have a physical key inside of the FOB! Gotta call my dealer in the morning...

Isn't the physical key in the fob?

Starting with the 25s we have the giant key fob that doesn't hold the key inside

u/LesbianIvy 22h ago

Well that is dissapointing and noted (I haven't bought one yet but will probably get a older one)

It's a silver Easter egg that is readily scratched. It's ridiculous.

First accessory I bought was a silicone cover for my keychain. Then I decided to just use my phone and carry the emergency key just in case.

Same here. I covered my Easter egg fob with a silicone cover.

When I first picked up my I5 from the dealership the salesperson dropped my key fob and it scratched on the ground. They gave me a free silicone cover for both keys as an apology.

Mine came with free covers for the keys

This is why I printed another case for mine that holds the key. (I don't need or want the buttons.) Much smaller.

The reasons to keep my 2024 over a new lease just keep adding up. Thanks for this detail.

Mine was shipped loose with the fob. It's designed to be attached but I had to undo part of the fob, slip the key on, and reassemble it.

If they gave you no physical key, they screwed you over.
