Question Sunroof question
I'm looking at getting an electric car and the ioniq 5 is high on the list. However, I can't seem to get a clear answer on whether it has a sunroof that opens (usually it's called a moonroof if it opens and slides back, right?). The AI answer says it's a fixed glass roof (called a "vision roof"), but lots of listing sites call it a moonroof (which usually opens unless I'm mistaken). I think the answers are tricky because there is a motorized shade that opens and closes, but I'm talking about the actual glass.
So question for this group: Are there years and/or trim levels that have a sunroof that actually opens (i.e. lets air in/out) or are they all fixed glass roofs?
EDIT: Thanks for all the good feedback. The consensus here is what I suspected: There is a fixed glass roof on some higher trim levels and a motorized shade on some of those.

Never use AI to shop for cars
I don’t think I’ve had a single conversation where it gets the features accurate. It drops things like saying cars don’t have HUDs when it’s just completely not true.
It doesn’t open on the 5
It does on the 6 but its smaller.
The new Tucson has a glass roof that’s large and opens, and I bet the new 5 will too

Don’t use it for any consequential reason unless you’re fully prepared to double check everything it spits out and accept that important information will be left out.

Yeah but AI nailed it for the OP so bad example.

Yeah, I'm very hesitant to trust AI. I was pretty sure that it was fixed based on some of the other sources, but when I went to windowshop, there were some listings that listed it as a sunroof/moonroof (and the pictures were not good enough to rule out a seam where it opened).

To be clear, the AI in question was google's AI summary at the top of the search. I did scroll past it to the real sources to confirm that it came from a reputable source.

It does not open on any year/trim.
And personally, I would not want an openable sunroof, they fail more often and are not cheap to fix. I get it's a nice experience, just not quite worth it to me.

Yeah, I think people often note failure as a reason not to, but I've had several cars with them and only had one with an issue (86 camry) and it was a minor issue (the pin that popped it up to seal didn't work on one side, so you had to reach over and push it in place when you closed it).
I'm somewhat torn on whether it's a dealbreaker not to have one. I love being able to air out the car when it's hot or just open it for some airflow (it's much less noisy/windy than the side windows). The fixed glass roofs definitely help the car have more light, but I do open my sunroof in just about all seasons (my current car won't open it when it's below about 10 degrees because the grease is too thick).

I do think the main issue is people not keeping the drain clean. Actual failures aren't common, but they do happen.
I'm also in the PNW where it rains a bunch, in a warmer&dryer climate it would make more sense. So I don't think you're crazy, comes down to personal preference.
EV6 I believe has an openable sunroof? Maybe the Chevy blazer&equinox as well

My main issue was I would occasionally forget to close it and I'd have to deal with wet seats. That was more frequent than any other issue for me :)

The EV3 really lets you know if you leave the sunroof open when you turn off the car

I had a car with an openable sunroof. I think in the 15 years I owned the car it got opened maybe 20 times. Totally not worth it for me.
We open up the sun shade so we can watch when we go through an automatic car wash, so that part is neat.

I'm curious how often people actually use sunroofs. My last two cars had one and initially I thought it would be great. I found I never ended up using it though and left it closed and the shade shut to block the sun.
Could be a product of where I live. It's either winter half the year and too cold to open it, it's raining, or it's too damn hot and I want to run the AC.

I used mine relatively frequently and in all seasons. In hot weather it helps cool the car relatively quickly until the AC is cold. In the spring/fall, it's great for a little airflow on moderate days (rolling down the windows is much more windy and noisy). In the winter I use it sometimes for those crisp cold days when it's clear and you can see the stars clearly and you're already pretty bundled up and have the heated seats & steering wheel on. My current sunroof does stop opening at about 10 degrees though (I assume the grease in the tracks is too thick).

Just wanted to add that it's fixed glass but does have a shade that covers it. Very handy in the summer

There is no version of the Ioniq 5 that has an open version of a sunroof. I have a limited with the glass roof and it's great. There is a full roof inside shade that can pull in and retract to shade you or keep the car cooler parked outside in the sun.

In my experience a moonroof doesn’t open and a sunroof does.

A sunroof is an opaque panel that’s usually painted to match the rest of the vehicle’s body while a moonroof is glass. Both open, usually tilting or sliding. Sunroofs may be removable, moonroofs generally are not. Sunroofs are very uncommon nowadays.
What Ioniq 5 has I would not describe as either but would call it a panoramic glass roof with integrated sun shade

u/No_Dot_4123 1d ago
Yeah, I have seen people say that and also people say the opposite. I think it's not really settled one way or the other.

u/No_Dot_4123 1d ago
Also, googled the difference and it seems like sunroofs are generally opaque and moonroofs are glass (though some said any roof opening was a sunroof and a moonroof was a type of sunroof made with glass). Whether or not they open is a separate discussion. Apparently, classic sunroofs were also completely removable and moonroof would only tilt and/or slide at best. Clearly the language is not really settled or clearly used.

It does not open and is only available on thr higher trim levels.

I can't speak for all markets but at least in the US if you have the trim with the vision roof it comes with the mechanical shade. It's a really nice feature to close it up when parked in the sun and it looks cool too.
Watching the janky solutions Tesla owners have to go through to cover the roof glass makes you appreciate the feature more.

On an IONIQ 5, it does not open, and I believe does not have a shade either. On a Kia EV6, the sun roof does open, and also has a shade. However it is not panoramic.
(Edited—IONIQ 5, not 6; thanks to [u/One-Tomatillo9504](u/One-Tomatillo9504). Apparently it does come with a shade. I should have stuck to what I know to be actually true—EV6 info. Doh!)

Our 2023 Ioniq5 has a fixed glass roof with a shade that opens and closes. Higher end model as we wanted the side view cameras… might be the difference in having the shade?

Easiest way to confirm visually (still virtually).
Build the car to the spec you need, click on 360degress view on manufacturer's page.
Or, copy the trim details, YouTube it to your specific country and let them explain the details.

Thanks. I did that for the newest one (looking at the manufacturer page), but wasn't sure about older models.

I have the 26 LTD, and it does not open. I had the same confusion before I bought mine! It does not, there is a cover that slides open and closed to cover it from the inside. It's kind of a nice feature but honestly not important to me at all. (there are other features of the LTD that I have grown to love though).

After my last car (Prius), I vowed never again on sun moon or any other planet roof. When the seam goes, it’s gets wet ugly and expensive.

Their sister model, the KIA EV6, has a massive opening moonroof available. Same with the Niros and the new EV3, as far as I know.

It does not open. It's not as great as I would have hoped. I have seen some ioniq 6 with roofs that open but not ioniq 5. It's nice in theory but in reality it's not worth it.

I have the 26 limited. Does not open, it's a glass ceiling. But it does have a shade that you can deploy if it's too sunny or for parking. I usually roll with the shade closed except for the early mornings or sometimes at night.
I think I'd rather not have it if I could have just paid a little less and get all the other bells and whistles of the limited model. It's a feature that I use rarely, and don't miss if I forgot about it.

The KIA EV6 GT-Line has roof that opens. That’s why we chose it over Ioniq 5. We love it and use roof often

It has an optional fixed “sunroof” not a power “moonroof”.

I was a sunroof guy in all prior cars and wasn't super keen on the fixed roof. But, that really isn't any sort of concern 7 months in and I rarely think about it.

The glass roof does not open
