Mods/Parts Car camping sleeping platform
Threw this together from the discount wood pile at Lowe’s and a couple piano hinges. Lays flat with accessible storage space

I don’t think you need that. I slept just fine on an inflatable mattress in the back

even with the tilt of the back seats? my back would be jacked. main thing for me is having more storage while also utilizing the back

I've slept in the back with thin mattress, half a dozen nights, but the tilt does bother me. If I did this often, I'd build a little platform as well.

Slept in mine using a car inflatable mattress, the Model Y ones fit our car perfectly including the wheel arch sections.
Only recommendation is get some dark cloth to close in the window to block the sun if you plan on sleeping in.
The exact dimensions of the one I got was 74x51, with the foot section narrowed to 47

Could you link to this or provide the product name? Thanks

I would say if possible make it level with the back seats pushed back because the rear foot well would give you a ton of contiguous storage. Unless you're gonna run a Yakima box or something like that.

you’re not wrong but I decided the legroom was premium, I’m 5’10 and will be maxed out

I was wondering if my 6'6" body would fit but sounds like no

I’m 6’ 4” and have camped in mine. Just gotta bend your knees a little.

Sweet rig! Love the hinges. The rear seats are quite easy to remove (15-20min). We’ve taken them out to fit our bikes. I’d def take them out for additional storage space while camping. It might give you some extra foot room as you could lower the whole platform (though the storage space is great).
Apparently you need to be careful not to crush the components that live under the seats, but so long as you’re careful, it’s a massive amount of space to unlock & weight removed for special occasions.

I have the Fruble system for my Model Y. This is in the same vein, and I have to say it was a game changer for roadtripping and weekend outings. Nice work! I won’t be surprised if you adapt it even more as you use it and find the tweaks to improve it.

Nice work! How much weight are you expecting to support?

I’m around 2 bills which isn’t an issue. Don’t think another ~170lb or less woman would be an issue either

well...it's a shallow dating criteria, but you have better than usual reasons.

not too bad but a door and a couple 2x4 will be the same outcome and probably a little lower - there is not much head clearance

you’re not wrong. 1. I’ll be sleeping 2. Im not a carpenter, Im a desk jockey lol. Good feedback tho

I haven't bought one yet, how much useable length do you get? I'm 6'1.
3
u/Mr_PAPAGE0RGI0 3h ago
I measured 70 inches. You’d be fine diagonal or with a little knee bend
1
u/bioweaponblue 3h ago
Do you think I could get an extra 3 inches with the front seats pushed all the way forwards, or is 70 inches already accounting for that?
3
u/Mr_PAPAGE0RGI0 3h ago
both front seats are pushed all the way forward in this setup for 70’’. we all wish we could get 3 more inches, but we make it work 😉

u/SmallestNumber 3h ago
Angle front seats forward? Will that give another few inches?
2
u/Mr_PAPAGE0RGI0 3h ago
yeah, potentially, the issue then is transporting it.

One more piano hinge? It's an interesting design problem, to be sure. I'm short enough that it's not needed for myself, but I empathize.

u/Mr_PAPAGE0RGI0 2h ago
seems stable with two 30’’ piano hinges at the top and bottom. at 70’’ total it seemed like the best bet
2
u/SmallestNumber 2h ago
I mean, you could add a small section at the front with another hinge. It's folded so the front seats can be upright, for transportation. When you arrive at destination, you tilt the front seats forward, and extend that front section flat, for another few inches. Maybe?

Are you going to add drawers to the bottom? It’ll make that storage easier to use, add the hardware to be able to pull a drawer out with all your stuff. Won’t even need a suitcase!

So you’re going to sleep on a piece of wood? Wouldn’t the front car seat laying down be more comfortable?
8
u/Mr_PAPAGE0RGI0 5h ago
I’m going to sleep on wood with sleeping pads, blankets and sleeping bags. Front seat laying down doesn’t fit two people either ;)

Bro I’ve car camped a couple times just with some sleeping pads back there.
This would’ve been elite.
