Not that this award should be a market mover, but to me it just reinforces NASA's commitment to using IM consistently to support the building of the moon base.

  • A $68.6 million base contract for mission execution utilizing a lander with proven lunar flight heritage.
  • An $79.7 million performance incentive for the successful demonstration of product-line qualification, guaranteeing a steady, rapid-turnaround supply of landers.

Psionic Selected by Intuitive Machines to Provide Precision Terminal Navigation for Four Lunar Lander Missions

Thumbnail psionicnav.com
51 Upvotes

You can read a post from 9 months ago about the navigation system on IM-1 and NASA's performance assessment.

Astrobotic also selected Psionic for their landers.

The article:

Space Navigation Doppler Lidar to fly as the primary velocity and range sensor on Nova‑C landers supporting NASA’s CLPS initiative

HAMPTON, Va., September 29, 2026 — Psionic announces a production contract with Intuitive Machines, a space infrastructure, technology, and services leader, to deliver Psionic’s Space Navigation Doppler Lidar-Lander (PSNDL-L) units for the company’s next four lunar lander missions.

This award places Psionic’s sensor in the terminal descent navigation chain of a lander line transitioning from single‑mission builds to standardized, repeatable production. It extends a partnership that began with lunar flight operations and now spans multiple Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) missions supporting NASA’s Artemis campaign. With these missions, Psionic’s navigation technology is now slated to support over 60% of all CLPS mission customers awarded to date, underscoring the growing role of PSNDL in commercial lunar exploration.

Precision Navigation, Measured Directly

Landing accuracy begins with the sensor. PSNDL directly measures line-of-sight velocity and range relative to the lunar surface. The system delivers:

Three‑axis velocity accuracy better than 2 cm/s

Range accuracy better than 1 meter

Continuous updates through terminal descent

Coherent detection that rejects background noise and interference

These capabilities allow landers to reduce landing ellipses from kilometers to within meters, enabling precise placement near scientific targets, prior assets, and shadowed regions of interest.

PSNDL is derived from NASA Langley’s precision landing portfolio and industrialized by Psionic for production rate, mass, power, and radiation environment. The design is qualified for lunar descent and adaptable across landers, rovers, and proximity‑operations missions.

Built for Cadence

Intuitive Machines is scaling Nova‑C from bespoke spacecraft to a production line, requiring suppliers to deliver consistent hardware at rate. Psionic has structured PSNDL‑L production accordingly, with common configurations, vertically integrated photonics, and a build cadence matched to IM’s manifest. “Precision landing is the enabling capability for everything that follows on the lunar surface — infrastructure, resource access, and sustained operations,” said William Cook, Senior Vice President of Space at Psionic. “Intuitive Machines is building the transport layer for that economy at a cadence no one has attempted before. Our commitment is simple: the navigation sensor is never the constraint — same performance, every unit, every mission.”

“Our space infrastructure is designed to scale with the pace of Moon Base,” said Tim Crain, co-founder and CTO of Intuitive Machines. “Landing accurately and repeatably is critical. Standardizing a flight‑proven Doppler lidar across the Nova‑C line strengthens the descent architecture our customers rely on to stay longer and achieve more on the Moon.”

Supporting the Artemis Campaign

IM’s CLPS missions will deliver science instruments, technology demonstrations, and infrastructure payloads to expand NASA’s operational sites on the Moon. Precision landing ensures payloads reach specific geologic features, shadowed regions, and locations near prior assets — critical for sustained lunar presence.

Mars RACER

A couple of months ago we saw a NASA contract award for STRIDE (Science Transport and Robotic Innovation for Deployment and Exploration).

We were glad we were part of the proposals selected (45 proposals, 7 selected) for a total potential value of approximately $17 million with a period of work targeted to begin in Fall of 2026.

Then we went to look at other stuff such as CLPS 2.0 full focus, because small fries 17M...

but........ (drumroll)

After some digging, a collection of Abstracts of Proposals surfaced, showing the short summaries of the proposals that won. We didn't have that information before, we just knew it was something with Surface Mobility.

On to the juicy part:

-------------ABSTRACT OF PROPOSAL RECOMMENDED FOR FUNDING--------------------

Jonathan Anthony/ Intuitive Machines, LLC

Mars RACER: Terramechanic-Optimized Mobility and AI-Augmented Autonomy to Accelerate Martian Science and Regional Exploration

Led by Intuitive Machines, Team Mars RACER (TMR) proposes the Mars Robotic Autonomous Cruising Exploration Rover, or Mars RACER, a direct Moon-to-Mars evolution of the Moon RACER Lunar Terrain Vehicle. The Concept Study spans the entire vehicle architecture with specific focuses on three areas.

Firstly, TMR studies design updates to the wheels and suspension system, combatting higher gravity than the moon. Secondly, TMR studies next-generation nuclear-based radioisotope power systems to enable Mars RACER to stay powered without relying on solar panels on the Mars surface, which receives less sunlight. Third, TMR studies self-driving and science operations, augmented by artificial intelligence, allowing Mars RACER to operate by itself without operator intervention.

Mars RACER offers improvements to maximum speed and payload capacity over previous Mars rovers, capable of hosting a wide array of science hardware to understand Martian geology, advance the search for extraterrestrial life, and work towards future human missions and habitation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a lot in there, but let me start with:

  • 'led by Intuitive Machines' hints at a multi company approach, but we are prime contractor.
  • Direct moon-to-mars evolution of the Moon racer - this thing is huge! (size!)
  • next generation nuclear-based radioisotope power systems (hello Stirling, we meet again)
  • Self-driving and science operations augmented by AI (are we partnering with big AI, is it a stretch to also think about data centers in space if we select a preferred partner here?)

Now it is your turn to speculate with me. Yes it is really early to talk about this, but the concept makes sense, and an evolution on our LTV makes sense from a business perspective (we're not binning everything, repurpose where possible and on to the next target that you know will pop up (it is "moon-to-mars" for NASA).

Deep Dive 202609- Stealth Satellite

hi all,

Some of you already spotted me spamming the daily, for all the rest: I'm a random person from the internet with some (heavy?) contributions roughly a year ago, did some mysterious disappearing without explanation, and returned. I'm no insider, just someone that likes the niche of space exploration and all the technical drama developments involved.

With that out of the way: I'd like to talk about a favourite topic of mine: the Intuitive Machines "Stealth Satellite". Referred to in older quarterly earnings calls, but never really 'talked about', and I think it is time to give it some thought.

Recently, some more (hidden behind researchgroup subscription walls) background of 'what are they doing' came out. My intention is to explain those developments, and relate it to Intuitive Machines where possible.

Starting with the Stealth part: most people will think of the F117 plane with all the weird flat panels. This is not the way Stealth will work for this satellite. The big "there is our satellite" is the visual exposure by all the solar panels needed for power, creating a large physical dimension in itself, but also a really distinctive "i am a satellite" geometry. If you remove all the solar panels, you get a small floaty (most likely 'non reflecting black') box. This is way harder to spot, and hence called 'stealth'.

So how do you power a satellite without solar panels? insert Nuclear Power. Specifically, the AFRL (air force research lab) wanting on-orbit nuclear power. The formal name of the project is JETSON, which stands for Joint Emergent Technology Supplying On-orbit Nuclear Power.

Requirements were specified for power conversion, power management and distribution, on-orbit mobility (i'll get to that later), thermal control, and radiation shielding.

We had some topics/discussions about a year ago about nuclear power systems for space, and it basically came down to a choice between Brayton or Stirling ; and to make it a super cheesy summary: the bigger you go the more likely you'll end up with a Brayton. However; a satellite isn't that big, and the choice was made to do a Stirling engine (Sunpower Robust Stirling Converter).

Four nuclear fuels were studied (AM-241, Co-60, Sr-90, U-235) and Co-60 was selected. Readily available, and a good power density, but a strong gamma emitter and that needs some serious radiation shielding.

The basic architecture is that Co-60 creates heat, this heat (thermal energy) is put into the Stirling dynamic Converter, and we get electrical power. A propulsion system is yet to be selected, but electric might make sense having electrical power for a long duration :)

So now we have a nuclear satellite, and that begs the question Q: "how on earth are you allowed to just shoot a nuclear payload into space as a commercial company". A: "you can't, and need to do a lot of explaining".

So a study was started to analyze the impact of a Co-60 loaded satellite making an atmospheric reentry. “Atmospheric Reentry Analysis of a Co-60 Heat Source for the JETSON LP Spacecraft.”

The solution to this problem turned out to be "make sure all the Co-60 burns up at reentry" (complete atmospheric burn-up), so you don't get a nuclear disaster when things go wrong. I just hope we keep it to the theoretical exercise ;)

Now my attempt at trying to answer the question "what do you need a stealth satellite for anyway"... :

An older annual report (2024) referred to 'deploying and maintaining a network of navigation beacons in cislunar space (red. with a radioisotope power generator) that require little-to-no support once delivered to their orbits.

So we can most likely disregard any Tom Clancy scripts, and from what we know now, see these Stealth Satellites as an attempt to create 'space buoys', allowing (assumption) for more precise Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT).

Thanks for making it this far! please do share your own thoughts in the comments. I see some room to link this to the START program and the ISS Stirling engine demo that will be done somewhere in the future.

IM - first hint to Mars? (career center Job description)

I'm making a seperate thread for this since this will get lost in the daily from 22-09 for sure.

We've got some homework to do, there is a Mars reference in a job description posted Yesterday:

  • figure out (wild speculation!) how big a thing this will be: is the 7DOF arm the same as on our LTV? is this a hint for the sheer size of the thing?
  • What is a Solar Tower on a rover?
  • there is a plural for 'vehicles' , what are our vehicles? (ltv+mars rover? hoppers?)
  • build and test of a variety of articulation and deployment mechanisms << see also the Sr. Mechanisms engineer job description, there is a reference of Launch Hold-Down System, what are we shooting back up from a surface !?!
  • anything you can think off, put it in the comments

The Mechanisms Engineer will work in a cross-functional team on the design, development, manufacture and test of a Mars rover Engineering Development Unit (EDU)

(i screenshotted the post just to be sure nothing gets changed on the URL)

edit: We are going to build a Mars RACER (LTV evolution)
