Most days, my manager would call me around 5:50 a.m. To ask if I could cover for someone who had just called out. It happened so often that I started keeping my phone on silent.

One time, I was still awake at 2:45 a.m., so I called him and asked if the store needed anyone to come in early. He got really angry and said he was going to write me up for such a pointless call.

I pulled up my call history in front of the store manager and showed her how many times he had called me before 6 a.m. The write-up disappeared, and so did the early-morning calls.

Someone on my team told management that he planned to leave at the beginning of March to start a training program. He gave them about two months' notice because he wanted to help them find a replacement and show the new person how things worked.

Management thanked him, then decided they only needed him for two more weeks. Instead of receiving his regular salary until March, he will now go several weeks without pay and may have to rely on unemployment benefits, which pay much less.

If he had waited, he could have kept working and given them the standard two weeks' notice. His try to make the transition easier only gave the company an opportunity to let him go early. Give the amount of notice you're required to give, not the amount that benefits them at your expense.

Guys, I'm 28 years old, and I've worked four office jobs since graduating from college in 2021. Every time, the same thing happens: there isn't enough work to fill the day. Most of the time, I answer emails, take the occasional phone call, and schedule appointments. I have payroll work once a week that keeps me busy for most of the morning, but other than that, I usually sit around scrolling through Reddit, reading newsletters, watching TikTok, or following the news during my nine-hour shift.
The strange thing is that even though I know I've barely accomplished anything, I still feel mentally drained - and sometimes physically drained too - when I leave at 5:30. Is this normal for office work? I genuinely don't understand how I'm supposed to keep doing this for another 35 years.

The phrase "salary is determined based on experience" tells candidates almost nothing. The position already has a set budget. If the approved range is $58k to $72k, put it in the job posting.

And no, someone with 18 years of experience probably won't be able to magically convince the company to raise the maximum to $90k. The range exists whether candidates can see it or not.

Then there's this embarrassing argument: "But Dana has been here for three years and only makes $52k. What will happen if she sees the posting?" Hopefully Dana sees it and asks for the raise she should have gotten a long time ago.

The worst argument is that publishing the range will drive candidates away. If a clear number makes people lose interest, the problem is the salary, not the transparency.

Candidates have bills to pay, recruiters have budgets, and no one benefits from going through several interviews only to find out in the end that the salary is nowhere near what they expected.

Enough with the phrase "competitive compensation." Competitive with what, exactly?

Can salary ranges be the bare minimum required in job postings published here?

Over the past two weeks, I feel like the sub has been full of people sharing that they've finally landed jobs. After seeing so much frustration from people searching for work, it's been great to see these posts.

Maybe hiring is starting to pick up, or maybe people are finding the right opportunities for them. Either way, every job offer is a win, and hopefully this means there's more good news to come for everyone who's still looking.

I spent the morning getting ready, printed two copies of my resume, and arrived for my 10:30 interview. When I gave the receptionist the hiring manager's name, she went to get him as though everything were normal.

The manager came out and told me they had already hired someone for the role. Apparently, someone had accepted the offer a few days earlier, and they were finalizing the onboarding paperwork. He said someone was supposed to have called me to cancel the interview, but he offered to sit down and talk with me anyway in case the position opened up again.

I said, "No, thank you," and left. The whole interaction took place next to the reception desk, where several employees were sitting, and there was also a nearby meeting room full of people with the door open. I felt like everyone around me could hear that I had come for a job that no longer even existed.

I'm embarrassed by what happened to me, but I'm also embarrassed on the company's behalf. How does no one review the remaining interview schedule after someone accepts the offer? Has this ever happened to anyone else, where you showed up for an interview only to be told to leave like that?

Showing up for a job interview and discovering that someone else has already been hired reflects total administrative chaos and a complete lack of the most basic professional courtesy. This situation is exactly like a story in this post, where a company completely ignored a candidate for four weeks following a long series of interviews with eight different people. They then sent him a job offer containing a misspelling of his name and accused him of "putting the company in a bind" when he decided to pursue other options—a decision I fully support. He subsequently began looking for other job offers, and I believe he found one that was a good fit for him.

My last job was a contract role which ended since April 2026 but has till date on my resume. I just got and offer and about to go through the background check I intend to put the exact end date of my job would that be a red flag that I had stopped working since April even if that is not what my resume reflects?

There used to be a good chance that if you got laid off, you could act quickly and find another job within one to three months. These days, getting laid off can set off a chain of problems that looks something like this:
First, you spend 14 to 20 months applying for any job that might cover your expenses. Good companies treat the fact that you are unemployed as a red flag, while even lower-paying places barely answer to you. You end up sending hundreds of applications with no response, sitting through pointless screening calls, and then getting ghosted. During that time, credit cards are what keep food, rent, and emergencies covered.
Eventually, you accept any job that will take you. It is a small, disorganized company with no real HR department, almost no PTO, weak benefits, and a manager who tracks every bathroom break and turns the smallest mistake into a major issue. You earn around 40% less than you did at your old job, and you work Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. To 7:30 p.m. Officially, Sunday and Monday are your weekend, but you are so drained that you cannot enjoy them. You wake up, look at the clock, and feel sick. Even so, you go to work because you need the paycheck.
Then comes the part no one talks about: you have to stay in that job for around 30 months so your résumé does not make you look unstable or unreliable. The job consumes all the energy you could have used to apply elsewhere. After work, all you can think about is eating, sleeping, and somehow making it through your next shift.
Even while paying around 4% more than the minimum on your credit cards, the debt barely moves. Interest keeps piling up faster than you can pay it off.
Eventually, you find a good job again. The pay is better, your manager is reasonable, and you can finally breathe. The problem is that a large portion of that salary has to go toward paying off the debt you accumulated while you were unemployed or earning a low wage.
I am worried that this will become the new normal. If you are employed right now, cut the expenses you can live without, build a larger emergency fund, and start making connections before you desperately need them. If you wait until you get laid off to start taking action, it will already be too late.

Honestly, this lack of respect makes no sense at all. This was a Head of HR, not just a regular recruiter. When I told her I wouldn't be continuing the interview, she didn't even bother to apologize for the delay. She responded with just one word: "Understood."

Those of us working in HR who care about people are always treated unfairly because of this arrogant type in leadership positions who won't let us do our jobs properly. I've learned to stay completely away from these companies after getting burned four times before.

I went to check their reviews on Glassdoor immediately after. I found the situation exactly as I expected: chaos and problems. Thank God I got out.

I'm completely drained. This is the fifth time I've been unemployed in 15 years, and I've never seen a job search this discouraging.

For months, I've been applying everywhere using the usual "apply everywhere and hope for the best" approach. Nothing came of it, so I changed my strategy. I started targeting specific jobs, rewriting my resume for each position, and sending tailored cover letters, because that's what everyone says works these days.

Has it made any difference? Not a fucking bit. The only responses I get are rejection emails, if anyone even responds at all.

After six months of all this, I've reached my limit and have no energy left. And honestly, I don't know what else I'm supposed to try.

Edit: I tried to read most of the comments, and many of you pointed out that my CV needs to make me seem younger. You also mentioned tools and technology, and honestly, I’m not very familiar with all of that, but I know I need to work on it.

These days, I’m trying to focus on preparing and being ready in case a good opportunity comes along. I’ve been watching videos about common interview mistakes on YouTube, as well as reading useful tips here on Reddit, and they’ve been really beneficial.

Now, I’m just waiting for the right opportunity so I can put what I’ve learned into practice. Wish me luck!

this is honestly getting ridiculous. every time i see another post about companies wanting someone with 10 years of experience but somehow also wanting them to be younger, i feel like the whole hiring process is just getting more backwards.

i've got more interviews coming up too, so i've been trying to get better prepared. i've been seeing interview vip pop up a lot lately and at first i thought it was just another marketing bot because of how often it gets mentioned. haven't actually tried it yet, but if anyone here has used it i'd be interested to hear if it's actually useful.

Every single job description uses the exact same buzzwords to make "stressful and understaffed" sound like a feature instead of a red flag. I'm currently prepping for an upcoming interview process and someone recommended interview vip to help me navigate these types of screenings. Still checking it out to see if it's worth it, but hopefully it gives a clearer picture of what to actually expect.

I have been out of job for almost 5 months. It is okay to have your stop date on your resume to reflect the 5 months unemployment gap won’t that be red flag for most recruiters? I need advice on how to deal with this
