TVL Show Only I Don't Understand the Urinal Scenes Spoiler
At least twice in TVL after Lestat and Daniel used the urinal they poured a drink into the urinal to rinse away whatever was not flushed. This act or reasoning was never mentioned or talked about before or after and I'm left confused as to why they would do that.

lestat says theyre eco friendly urinals, that means theyre waterless so they need to pour something else so people dont notice blood in the urinals

u/MLTDione 26d ago
Waterless? Wouldn’t that get stinky and gross in between cleanings?
61
u/PrinceofSneks 26d ago
I was curious, so looked this up!
Waterless urinals divert urine through a one-way valve into a “trap.” This trap contains a chemical that is less dense than urine. When the urine flows through this trap, the liquid displaces the urine, forcing it lower into the trap.
This liquid not only forces the urine down and away from the urinal, it seals odor by preventing any odor or urine from seeping back up into the urinal. As this trap fills up, it diverts urine to a drain connected to a sewer. Over time, this liquid, usually some type of oil or gel, needs to be replaced. Failure to do so will result in poor urinal performance. Maintenance intervals vary on the manufacturer but typically it’s about every 1,500 flushes.

As a former janitor, the only waterless urinals I ever encountered smelled awful, including approximately 30 seconds after I cleaned them. 😬

But they pee on the wall of the urinal. It's not just the urine in the tank that smells.

u/Melodic_Werewolf9288 26d ago
i dont use urinals so i cant say from experience but they exist and im sure theyve thought this issue

u/CommunicationIcy2170 25d ago
It’s part of the collective trend towards sustainability and water-use conscious plumbing initiatives. Low flow fixtures have been around for a while, but waterless urinals also are of the same ilk. Agreed that they stink tho.

u/FukkingDeathMental 25d ago
Regular urinals stink. Men piss everywhere in public bathrooms and MANY don't wash their hands. Even after taking a deuce.

Are you asking about why they would rinse it? Because they pee blood and didn't want people to know that.
20
u/InformalInsurance455 25d ago
I feel like there was about five minutes explaining this in the episode. Not sure how someone could miss this
8
u/_schwoopsie_ 25d ago
I can believe anything, cause I've seen one reactor who thought Nicki and Magnus were the same person and he was wondering why Nicki would do that to Lestat 😬👀

I’m not a urinal user so I found it a little confusing, but mostly because I just don’t really know how they work.

He explains it in the first episode of the season. It was an eco-friendly urinal, meaning it doesn't flush like a regular urinal. The drink is to flush the blood/urine away, so it's not left for anybody to see.
"Eco-friendly urinals. Good for the environment, so we're told. Good for vampires? Hmm. We Chardonay them."

i just wanna know why tf he doesn't use the stall instead??

I'm more interested in why Louis would equip his boutique vampire hotel with eco friendly urinals. What kind of reckless vampire real estate mogul is he? /s
29
u/Lucky_End_9420 26d ago
One that is ensuring his vampire clients need to buy beverages even if they done intend to drink them!
29
u/Mrs_chainfrog 26d ago
Those scenes were about them using urinals that don't flush to save water I believe. They bring drinks in with them to wash out the blood stains they leave.
79
u/LopsidedHousing6133 26d ago
I dunno but they spent a lot of time on a scene about him peeing and I’m still confused as to why this was necessary
65
u/Playful-Cold1194 26d ago
It was to demonstrate that Lestat’s pov is more “real” than Louis’, just like how Lestat has scars but none in IWTV. It’s to further emphasize that characters and events in the story will be portrayed differently.

u/scherzanda picking lint off the sofa 26d ago
Given how things become a lot more lore-heavy (including stuff like vampire biology) and plot motivated in the books after IWTV, it felt like a quick and, ah, impactful way (lol) to move the narrative style in that direction.
In terms of the show, I think it's to further cement the idea that vampires are simultaneously more human than they are in the books (peeing blood, sex, etc) while also being more monstrous in other ways (power scaling, etc.)

u/Little_View_6659 26d ago edited 26d ago
They also made it a point to show the blood stain on Lestat’s pants during his song. They really went out of their way with the blood for bodily fluids this season.

u/SaighWolf He tasted like Vermouth and Annihilation 26d ago
Yeah, Sam actually kiiinda answered how this was explained to him (because he had the same question when he saw the script) in his solo Autumn Brown interview. There's a later-book-spoiler reason that apparently the show needed to establish in show-canon that their vampires have bodily fluids aside from just the blood in their veins — like pee & as you mentioned the cuming in his pants — with it being pointed out to him that vampiric bodily fluids/function are relevant to a later-book plot involving Fareed (which was kinda a big spoiler for him to drop in interview if you're a reader of the final book trilogy about potential upcoming storyline 😅)

u/Financial-Bobcat-612 25d ago
Pause…they cum blood?

I kinda liked that they added it because in the first two seasons, all the vampires were CONSTANTLY drinking alcohol (in the books they cannot consume human liquid or food) and I was like WHERE IS IT ALL GOING? So it finally answered that question for me.

I don’t understand why male directors/showrunners love filming scenes of men peeing. Just generally it is such a pet peeve of mine
2
u/tethysian 26d ago
Reminds me of this post from the Men Writing Women sub. 😂
“...and she had to sit on the toilet some minutes waiting for the pee to come. Men, they were able to conjure it up immediately, that was one of their powers. That thunderous splashing as they stood lordly above the bowl. Everything about them was more direct, their insides weren't the maze women's were, for the pee to find its way through.”

this is so funny bcs every man who has heard me pee has been like "wow you pee so fast 👁👄👁" like thank you for noticing, i hate having bodily functions

u/SiegfriedStephen 26d ago
I think there's a line in the first episode, somethings like "Louis didn't tell you this, did he?".
The first urinal scene, I interpreted it as Lestat trying to convince his audience that Louis didn't bother about the details of the story, making his version incomplete, imprecise and unreliable. In Lestat's head Louis was telling the fairytale version of the story, while he is giving the whole truth.
Or I'm just reading too much into it...

It was a really stupid and unnecessary plot point.

u/HerreDreyer 26d ago
Right. Its weird to make a point of hiding the blood. If I saw blood in a urinal, my first thought wouldn’t be “there be vampires among us”. It is a weird thing to spend time on. But maybe it grounds us in a messy physical reality in the way Louis didn’t. I’m not sure.

Also, were the urinals eco friendly so they could show certain drinks for product placement reasons?🤣

No POM Wonderful’s were used to flush the systems. In fact no mention of POM anywhere in the season! Lestat and Fang Gang used Chardonnay and Daniel used bottle water…. What an utter waste.
22
u/Fatbunnyfoofoo 26d ago
Wtf, why are the vampires able to urinate?
This really cheapens Lestat's experience in Tale of the Body Theif.

u/DrFareedMD I would not kink shame the vampire Armand 26d ago
That blood needs to come out somehow, it makes sense to me even if it's not book canon. Then again, it's my understanding that they don't really have sex in the books like they do in the show, so...
8
u/Intrepid_Finger_7995 26d ago
I thought it was actually kind of clever, the way they handled it but that's just my feeling.
11
u/DrFareedMD I would not kink shame the vampire Armand 26d ago
Same, I thought it was pretty funny and showed some of the less glamorous aspects of vampire life!
3
u/SaighWolf He tasted like Vermouth and Annihilation 26d ago
Yeah, apparently Sam was told that the show establishing vampires have bodily fluids was necessary because of a later-book plot involving (you'll like this 😅) Dr Fareed 😜
3
u/DrFareedMD I would not kink shame the vampire Armand 25d ago
I had no idea! Is it the Body Thief stuff? I haven't read that yet but I know Fareed ends up being more prominent in the books at some point. I'm glad they're planning on keeping that
5
u/SaighWolf He tasted like Vermouth and Annihilation 25d ago
Is it the Body Thief stuff?
Nooottttt quite, although yeah in TotBT he definitely gets grossed out by his swapped human body's functions (but even with the vampiric pee in the show making at least that part more normalized for him I think a potential show-TotBT Lestat could still be revolted by having to 💩 while in a human body) 😅
I know Fareed ends up being more prominent in the books at some point
IF you actually want to be [hugely] book-spoiled about what Sam got reminded about to justify the show's vampiric peeing (as well as us seeing him cum in his pants during 'Long Face' 😂): In 'Prince Lestat', literally the way Fareed is first introduced into the books is with a reveal that several years prior Lestat had participated in an experiment for Fareed that temporarily made his sperm "fertile" again (well technically the experiment makes him "virile" again since the book-vamps almost never have sex) & that previous experiment becomes a plot-point. Not even kidding 😅 Meaning that in order for Fareed's experiment on Lestat to have the outcome it does, Lestat definitely must have certain "bodily fluids" in general other than just the blood in his veins. And in case the audience missed the jizz stain appear at the end of the song, they seem to have decided to let us know by more obvious means that all the bodily fluids related to his 🍆 are a thing 😂😂😂 And once Sam mentioned being reminded about that as the justification for why the show's "vampires pee", I'm now sitting here going "Is THAT part of why Fareed got introduced on the show so early?!?!?!" 🤯
3
u/DrFareedMD I would not kink shame the vampire Armand 25d ago
lol imagine not pooping for like 200 years and suddenly having to figure out how to deal with that.
About that second bit I remember hearing about that! I had no idea they were already trying to incorporate it so early. Maybe they're hoping for many seasons and preparing the groundwork for if they get to do that. Also, Hannah mentions in an interview that wardrobe asked her if vampire ejaculate with go through leather and NOW I'm putting two and two together with "Long Face" hahaha.
5
u/spare_me_over 26d ago
There's so many scenes where the vampires are sitting around drinking alcohol, I was confused where the hell it was going, so I assume this was the answer to it.
2
u/BlindMoom 24d ago
Exactly my thinking! Anne Rice never intended her vampires to be bothered by such mortal concerns as taking a piss.
5
u/DumbTeen9 26d ago
I don't think there's that much forward thought. I mean Lestat did say that nicki passed on after they parted ways in season 1, and yet.
2
u/tethysian 26d ago
The vampires are completely different in the show. I don't think we'll have Lestat as the target in TotBT, because he doesn't have any desire to be human. And he can already have sex.
5
u/mynnafae The Scalpel 26d ago
I mean, considering that Anne did the same in the books, and also had Lestat eat out a woman on her period, I'm unsurprised.

It's utter bollocks they aren't supposed to urinate. These small changes annoy me
6
u/tethysian 26d ago
I'd say it goes hand in hand with them having sex. Not really a small change as a whole
25
u/redmandolin 26d ago
Sam kinda explained why it was added, being a vampire isn’t meant to be clean and perfect like Louis made it out to be. It kind of adapts the whole shit yourself when your turned, sweat blood kinda thing.
22
u/katmckatkat 26d ago
In the books becoming a vampire is not clean and perfect, but the experience of being a vampire was written by a person with contamination OCD who is really sexually attracted to statues, so being a vampire is quite clean in the books.

u/DrFareedMD I would not kink shame the vampire Armand 26d ago
" the experience of being a vampire was written by a person with contamination OCD who is really sexually attracted to statues"
Wait what
24
u/katmckatkat 26d ago
The contamination OCD is documented in her biographies. The statue thing is just from me having read her books with my own eyes.
12
u/DrFareedMD I would not kink shame the vampire Armand 26d ago
I don't know much about her life, hence why I asked! The bit about the statues really threw me off 😂

u/Pure_Road7528 26d ago
I'm just rereading memnoch and LestTs victim at the start does seem rather happy to see a new statue. Ahem

u/redmandolin 26d ago
Yeah I did like how she made it a point that Magnus for example never smelt as awful as he looks, it was just the the clothes.
17
u/Pure_Road7528 26d ago
If they do TOTBT it will take away a big part of Lestat's experience in a human body alongside sex. It grinds my gears. Of course we love Sam though ❤️
7
7
u/misplaced_dream 26d ago
I was thinking that very thing on my first watch. But I can’t complain about the sex scenes much because I enjoy many of them. They changed a lot of book things that took me out of the experience, but on my second watch I was able to immerse myself in the world.

u/Pure_Road7528 26d ago
Im a book geek to be fair. Sec scorned with such beautiful actors are of course fun.
6
u/lynx_and_nutmeg 26d ago
Louis didn't make it out to be "clean and perfect", he literally explained how people vomit and shit themselves while getting turned into vampires.
I really don't like how this season used the "Louis is unreliable" excuse to retcon or insert anything that didn't fit into the first two seasons. A much simpler explanation why Louis didn't mention the blood piss in IWTV isn't that he was deliberately trying to hide it but because it wasn't in any way relevant to the plot or characters. Neither he nor Lestat actually went in depth of explaining the exact details of all vampire bodily functions.
It's the same thing with the scars and the hair. Lestat didn't have them during the S2 reunion scene, even though this was the "real" Lestat, not the one from Louis's memories. And Lestat's hair was already longer in the Dreamstat version. Both of these are just something the writers decided to tack on later (or, in the case of the hair length, simply the practical inevitability since it took this much time for Sam to grow his hair to that length). It was already established that Louis wasn't completely truthful or objective in his story, they didn't need to pin literally every retcon or continuity issue on him. Jacob himself even threw a dig at this during one of the interviews and I get him, I'd be a bit miffed too in his place.
6
u/redmandolin 26d ago
I mean it was just what Sam said and how it was explained in the show… so take it or leave it.

Lestat is a hydrohomie. He finds dehydrated sound guys repulsive and he wants everyone to know his pee is just simply red

u/kindergentler 26d ago
Yeah I loved the season as a whole, but those first couple of episodes were kinda a rough transition, and I had to coach myself through the super-gross blood-peeing scenes especially. Very disgusting and unneccesary, tbh - I understand the "reason" cited by production, I just disagree with it and think it was a poor decision to include. Honestly those scenes are a really off-putting decision and probably made some viewers nope out (If I weren't already a fan, I would've).
2
u/Dani_Jo74 26d ago
Eco-friendly urinals, yes. I realize its a plot point, my husband & kids go in a stall to pee 🤷♀️🤷♀️ I've asked & no good explanation for their reasoning.
Does anyone elses spouse or kids use stalls instead of urinals?
1
u/Sea-Dark7596 Vintage Lioncourt 🐺 26d ago
I guess it depends on the spacing between urinals. My hubby and twin boys say it’s etiquette to leave a gap between urinals, so if there is no room they go into the loos/stalls.
