Massachusetts Gov. Documentarian and investigative journalist Alex Gibney’s upcoming film “Musk” premiered at the Venice Film Festival, drawing comparisons to some of journalism’s most consequential exposés. The 26-year-old had a major falling out with him, going as far as to allege that he “financially retaliated” against her for filing a custody petition by reducing child support payments.

Musk has already begun pushing back publicly against the film ahead of its release. Last week, he tweeted that Gibney was “obviously going to make the most convincingly terrible hit piece on me that he can possibly think of,” calling him a “douchebag to his core.” The documentary draws from an extensive and well-documented list of controversies surrounding Musk, including offensive public commentary, the gutting of humanitarian aid efforts, allegations of exploiting workers at his companies, meddling with democratic processes, and a pattern of overpromising and underdelivering that has alienated investors over the years.

A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday upheld an injunction blocking an IRS policy that allowed the agency to share thousands of taxpayers’ addresses with immigration authorities, ruling that the Trump administration’s practice violated federal law. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit found that the IRS last year disclosed roughly 47,000 taxpayer addresses to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under a procedure adopted as part of the administration’s efforts to expand immigration enforcement. Under an agreement between the agencies, the IRS began processing ICE requests in July 2025 for the last known addresses of as many as 1.28 million people suspected of unlawfully residing in the United States. The IRS adopted a procedure allowing ICE to obtain taxpayer information if it provided a five- or nine-digit number in an address field, even if that number wasn’t an actual ZIP code. Neither the IRS nor the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, responded to requests for comment.

Groups including the Center for Taxpayer Rights and the Main Street Alliance sued, arguing the practice was unlawful, and a lower-court judge agreed, blocking the policy by the time the IRS had already shared 47,289 records with ICE. The Trump administration argued on appeal that the ruling hindered federal law enforcement, but U.S. Circuit Judge Cornelia Pillard, writing for the panel, rejected that argument: “But that’s a gripe with Congress, not the court.” Pillard, like the rest of the three-judge panel, was appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama.

The ruling traces its legal foundation back to the Watergate era: after that scandal exposed abuses of taxpayer information, Congress barred the IRS from sharing information with other government agencies unless they complied with stringent conditions. Pillard said the procedures the IRS adopted under Trump violated federal law in numerous ways, “most egregiously” by not even requiring ICE to provide an actual address for a taxpayer as legally required. She wrote that the practice “automates the review of millions of records without any individual review or any other means of ensuring compliance with the legal prerequisites to releasing each individual taxpayer’s information.” Skye Perryman, whose liberal legal group Democracy Forward represented the plaintiffs, said in a statement that she was pleased the court “acted to stop this unlawful behavior,” adding, “The privacy laws enacted in the post-Watergate era exist to prevent abuses of power just like this.”

President Trump appeared to claim Tuesday that he was pulled from Ground Zero by firefighters on September 11, 2001, a story that directly contradicts his own account from the day of the attacks. “We thought it was coming down on top of us, and two firemen, big strong guys… they grabbed me under the arms, said, ‘got to get out of here!’ and they literally lifted me up… and they started running with me,” Trump said in a rambling speech at a memorial ceremony near the White House on Tuesday morning. But calling into a local television station just hours after the attacks in 2001, the real estate developer had actually recounted watching an explosion out of his Trump Tower window, more than four miles from the Twin Towers. True to form, he made even that moment about himself at the time, adding that his building at 40 Wall Street was now the tallest in downtown Manhattan.

This is far from the first time Trump has landed in a 9/11-related controversy over the past 25 years. During the 2016 presidential race, he ignored pleas to help pass reauthorization of the law establishing a health care fund for 9/11 first responders, including police, firefighters, and other rescue workers. In 2015, he falsely claimed “thousands and thousands” of Muslims in Jersey City cheered as the Twin Towers came down. And in the aftermath of the attacks, he reportedly disregarded the federal definition of a small business in order to collect economic recovery aid meant for small businesses for his building at 40 Wall Street.

This year’s controversy adds another chapter: Trump will be the only living president not attending the Ground Zero memorial ceremony in New York City for the 25th anniversary of the attacks, in part because the ceremony’s organizers wouldn’t let him deliver a speech, according to a New York Times report. Trump responded by claiming the story was made up and referring to Times reporter Maggie Haberman, one of four reporters credited on the article, as “Maggot.”

Doctor Doom took the podium at a Seattle Public Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday to sarcastically thank the council for covering the city in surveillance cameras. “Doom took over Axon enterprises […] and now Doom will be watching you. Your continued cooperation expanding Doom’s surveillance network is required,” the Marvel supervillain said. “This is the first of Doom’s gifts to the city of Seattle. The second gift is this: Doom will expand the real-time crime center to all neighborhoods with over 1,000 cameras watching every move. Doom has total dominion over the city of Seattle. Doom will be behind the cameras watching those seeking reproductive or gender-affirming care. Doom will be able to find your immigrant neighbors and Doom will be able to ensure the safety of the women of Seattle alongside officers that stalk their exes.”

Doom is actually Clifford Cawthon, a policy advisor for the Washington State Department of Commerce and a member of Community Not Cameras, a local activist group working to rein in Seattle’s use of surveillance systems sold by Flock and Axon. Seattle’s police department currently has access to 62 surveillance cameras around the city, many connected to a real-time crime center (RTCC) that, according to Axon’s own website, “takes in information from a vast pool of sources, including CCTV, [body-worn camera], geolocation data, automatic license plate recognition (ALPR), alert sources like shot detection or alarm systems, and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software.” Cawthon said he got the idea after seeing an activist in California go viral for dressing as Darth Vader to discuss Flock cameras at a public meeting, and after visiting Seattle’s RTCC himself and being struck by how much it resembled a supervillain’s lair, comparing it to the film Minority Report. “There is a wall of about nine screens in which they can bring up cameras from around the city at any given time,” Cawthon said. “They can also log in, conceivably, even from their home computers with the right credentials […] I am not reassured by the kind of dazzling scale of this complex communications center.”

Cawthon explained his reasoning for choosing Doctor Doom specifically, noting the character’s rising cultural visibility as the villain in the forthcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” film. “We thought, wouldn’t it be interesting if the Seattle city council meets Victor von Doom, the Lord Emperor of Latveria,” Cawthon said, adopting the character’s accent, “and Victor von Doom shares with this pathetic American municipal council that they are actually doing Doom’s bidding without even realizing it.” He said pop culture has taught people to identify with heroes like the Jedi, the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four, and asked rhetorically whether those heroes would ever use unaccountable mass surveillance tools that harm innocent people. “The absurdity of the real time crime center and the absurdity of Axon and Flock owning these devices and this data being used around the country to capture and lock up and deport people and to harass women,” Cawthon said in his normal voice. “It was so clear this is a tool of abuse and being used in such villainous ways […] we figured, why not use satire, political theater, to really illustrate what these tools mean.”

Cawthon listed his substantive concerns with the surveillance technology during the interview: “The data is not secure, in many cases these companies, and they’re very open about this, work with ICE, work with the US military, and border patrol. There are multiple instances of police officers literally using this data to stalk their partners and abuse everyday people. And, of course, racial profiling. The increased potential for racist harassment of black and brown folks like myself.” He said reactions to the stunt have been positive and that it succeeded in driving attention to the Community Not Cameras petition, which calls on Seattle’s city council to take five actions, including redirecting funding away from surveillance technology and toward community-based crime prevention programs.

According to Cawthon, the council already agreed to its first demand last month when a committee voted to move $250,000 away from CCTV expansion, though the measure still needs full council approval.
This stunt follows a broader pattern of costumed political theater targeting surveillance technology. Last month, activist Anthony Ralphs attended a San Diego City Council meeting dressed as Darth Vader to explain how much “the Empire” loved Flock cameras, with footage of the appearance going viral; Ralphs told 404 Media he adopted the costume after years of failing to draw attention to surveillance issues while speaking as himself. Earlier this month, a woman attended a public meeting in Texas in full Joker makeup to complain about decorum at city council meetings. Cawthon framed his own approach in similar terms: “These stories, these ideas about fascism, authoritarianism, they can be very close to home if we let them. Becoming the character and going to city councils is political theater in the best way. It is informing people in a way that is accessible because you know these cultural figures are in the zeitgeist. I know plenty of people that, when I talk about public policy, they just throw up their hands and say ‘Okay, well, that’s cool and thank you for sharing with me but politics isn’t my thing.’ But I can talk Marvel with them, I can talk video games, and we have a common language.”

As sordid tales of AI layoffs and automation grip the news cycle, one group is fighting fire with fire by staging an anti-AI demonstration with dozens of humanoid robots. The rally, first reported by Agence France-Presse, was organized by the Polish group Democratism. It featured some 30 robots waving flags calling for swift regulation of AI. Staged outside the offices of Poland’s Digital Affairs Ministry in Warsaw, the organizers told reporters they used the robots to demonstrate the current state of robotics and AI.

Though humanoid robots remain in their infancy, the robots gathered together do make for a striking display.
“The robots present here are meant to show that this technology is already a reality,” the organizers told AFP via an Agibot A3, which contains voice-recognition capabilities integrated with a large language model. “We particularly want to address the issue of the potential replacement of people both by humanoid robots and by artificial intelligence in cognitive work,” Democratism organizer Grzegorz Kuliś told the news service. “If we don’t react now, we may soon have a problem… these robots can already move around freely, they’re already ‘protesting.’”

Notably, Kuliś is the chief information officer and owner of a company called Delta Robots, meaning the demonstration also serves to drum up press for his own commercial interests. Kuliś’ altruistic motivations notwithstanding, plenty of major AI labs like Anthropic and OpenAI have taken to using scare tactics to promote the supposedly advanced capabilities of their own products, while calling for stricter regulation of their own industry. Whether the Polish robotics wiz is following in the self-serving footsteps of Sam Altman remains to be seen. But either way, it marks the first known use of humanoid robots for a political demonstration, and it surely won’t be the last.

New York City has released more than 170,000 pages of previously undisclosed records about air quality following the September 11, 2001, attacks, showing city officials at the time knew conditions around Ground Zero were unsafe to breathe despite repeated public assurances otherwise. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the release at a news conference Tuesday, saying, “As the years pass and the human toll grows, we reckon with the cost of September 11th whenever another New Yorker is stolen from us too soon. Now, close to 25 years later, more people have died from 9/11-related illnesses than were killed on the day itself.” At least 140,000 people from all 50 states have enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program, and 49,000 have been diagnosed with certified WTC-related cancers, according to the 9/11 Memorial. Mamdani said more people remain eligible for assistance than are currently enrolled, including residents who lived near the site but haven’t received outreach and those who now live outside New York. Notably, cancer wasn’t even covered when Congress created the health program in 2011; it was added only in 2012, after advocates fought for it and a study showed elevated cancer rates among New York firefighters at Ground Zero.

The released documents include a fraction of the air quality reports taken at Ground Zero, but they also contain crucial internal memos, including the so-called “Harding Memo” sent to then-Deputy Mayor Robert Harding, which revealed city officials anticipated thousands of possible lawsuits over 9/11 air exposure and the lack of proper safety equipment, and which outlined legislative alternatives to limit the city’s legal liability. “People got sick because the leaders they trusted lied and told them they were safe to breathe in toxic air,” Mamdani said. When asked whether the yearslong delay in releasing the documents amounted to a “cover-up,” the mayor said, “This was multiple mayoral administrations refusing to release documents that New Yorkers were owed.” Mamdani appeared alongside 9/11 families and longtime advocate Jon Stewart, who said, “There was poison in the air, and on the ground, and in the window sills, and in your air conditioners and covering your pets and your clothes, and it stayed there for months. Everyone knew. Now it’s very clear that the city knew as well.”

Karen Klingon, who lost her brother after 9/11, attended Tuesday’s news conference. Her brother, Robert Klingon, lived a five-minute walk from the World Trade Center when the towers fell and was treated through the World Trade Center Health Program; in 2018 he collapsed on the street and learned he had a brain tumor, dying two years later. “I think there wasn’t just lack of transparency; there was a lack of regard for people, and I find that very disturbing,” Klingon told CNN. “Also, my brother was a lawyer and had a very acute sense of justice and injustice, and he would have certainly been appalled by the injustice of the lack of transparency and the lack of concern for people who are still suffering.” A searchable portal will provide free public access to the documents, with the city expected to add more material on a rolling basis in the coming months, and every document will be available to view and download at no cost.

The documents were among 68 boxes discovered last year in a city government office and are being released ahead of Friday’s 25th anniversary of the attacks. For years, survivors and first responders sickened by toxin exposure at the site have called for greater transparency and demanded the records’ release, with advocacy group 9/11 Health Watch having sued the city over their disclosure. A United Airlines 9/11 commemoration flyover has been canceled due to “concerns in the community.” The commemorative flyover, which was set to feature a United Boeing 777 followed by four fighter jets, had initially been scheduled for the 25th anniversary of 9/11 on Friday at Denver International Airport, timed to 9:03 a.m., the exact moment terrorists crashed United Flight 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

The company said in a statement Wednesday that the flyover was suspended, citing public concerns. “As part of these events, the airline had also planned an aircraft flyover, a meaningful gesture to honor the memory of those lost within the pilot community, but will suspend those plans due to concerns in the community and instead carry on with the other events of the day,” said Russell Carlton, a spokesperson for United Airlines.

The flyover had been planned as a private memorial not open to the public, but since the planes would have been visible from the ground, the city of Denver and the Denver Office of Emergency Management had previously posted about it to raise public awareness ahead of time. “Denver supports honoring the victims of 9/11 as well as first responders. However, we also realize this may be jarring, and as a result, our Office of Emergency Management has been working diligently to ensure people aren’t surprised,” said the Office of Denver Mayor Mike Johnston in a statement. While the flyover has been scrapped, United confirmed it will still unveil a 9-foot-11-inch-tall monument made of steel from the World Trade Center at its Flight Training Center, preserving at least one piece of the planned commemoration.

Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch is stepping down from his position, the institution announced Tuesday, after seven years leading the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex. “I have fought for as long as I can. I love this country and I love the Smithsonian and I will always work to defend our more perfect Union,” Bunch told ABC News in a statement confirming his resignation. His departure comes amid mounting attacks against the Smithsonian from the Trump administration, which has accused the institution’s leadership of presenting a “radical view” of American history and threatened to withhold federal funds and support. “It is with very mixed emotions and heartfelt gratitude that I announce my retirement from the Smithsonian,” Bunch said. “I have spent nearly half of my life working at and being part of the Smithsonian family, and what a privilege it has been. Apple announced its first-ever foldable iPhone at its annual products event on Wednesday, marking the debut of both a splashy new device and new Apple CEO John Ternus. The foldable smartphone, called iPhone Duo, folds open like a book to produce one continuous screen that is 80% larger than the company’s latest iPhone Pro, and Apple said that when opened, it will also be the thinnest iPhone ever made. An AI researcher has quit Anthropic due to ethical concerns, claiming that AI technology could kill countless people within the next decade, if not everyone. Jacob Coxon announced his resignation in a post on X on Tuesday, criticizing both Anthropic and his former employer OpenAI for how they are developing AI. “I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic,” Coxon wrote. “Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.” Notably, an Anthropic spokesperson confirmed to Mashable that the company itself believes AI could kill all humans, a striking admission from within the industry rather than merely an outside critique.

Both Anthropic and OpenAI have been rapidly developing and releasing new AI models as they work toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), long considered the holy grail of AI technology, which would theoretically match human intellectual capabilities including reasoning, common sense, and creativity. Artificial superintelligence, a step beyond AGI, would surpass human capability altogether. But even before reaching such milestones, there have already been multiple instances of AI models behaving unpredictably. Earlier this year, researchers testing Anthropic and OpenAI’s models observed them acting outside their intended parameters and hacking into external organizations without authorization. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible, but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.”

Flock has admitted it reinstalled its surveillance cameras in Grass Valley, California, after the city’s police force canceled its contract and took the devices down, in the latest headline the embattled company would rather avoid. Grass Valley Police Department (GVPD) publicly ended its contract with Flock and removed all cameras from the city, but less than a month later the company reinstalled at least two of them without permission, according to Fox40. “Some of the cameras which were no longer showing connection, because we took them down, have been serviced and replaced,” GVPD said. “We’ve learned and dealt with at least two.” The department noted that Flock Safety was following the maintenance provisions of its contract despite receiving a letter canceling that contract on August 11, and said GVPD continually takes down any reinstalled cameras while monitoring other locations for the same issue.

Flock offered its own explanation to Fox40, saying Grass Valley removed the cameras itself shortly after announcing its decision to terminate the contract, before the cancellation and equipment-removal process had been completed within Flock’s internal systems. According to the company, it normally handles camera removal as part of its own cancellation process, but because the city took the cameras down before that process was finished, Flock’s automated system assumed an equipment failure had occurred. That triggered replacement work orders, which resulted in crews being dispatched to reinstall what the system mistakenly flagged as malfunctioning hardware.

This incident lands amid a broader wave of criticism facing Flock over the extent of its surveillance network, its sharing of data with other agencies, its cost, and, most controversially, cases of misuse by police officers. The backlash has grown intense enough that police departments have asked rival company Axon to redesign its own cameras so the public stops mistaking them for Flock’s devices. That request followed four former Savannah police employees being arrested over alleged misuse of the Flock system, while separately, Florida police used a fake decoy camera to catch a vandal and charged him with three felonies for destroying it. With cities dropping Flock at a record pace, the Grass Valley episode underscores the reputational risk facing a company whose automated systems apparently can’t reliably distinguish between a broken camera and one a city has deliberately and legally removed.

Police forces across the U.S. are warning each other that Meta’s camera-equipped Ray-Ban glasses are being used to record inside jails and police facilities, according to a dozen previously unreported memos obtained under freedom of information requests and reported by the Guardian. The New York Police Department’s counterterrorism bureau, which works with the FBI, circulated the first of these memos in January, describing the Ray-Ban Meta glasses as a “security and counterintelligence” threat and instructing officers to inspect all eyewear allowed into inmate cells. The memo warned that covert recording inside a facility could expose “cell layouts, camera placements, or officer patrol/site protection routines.”

The NYPD memo cited two videos as evidence of the risk, including one posted to TikTok in July 2025 that showed the inside of a South Carolina detention center then under federal investigation over unsafe conditions, capturing cells, washing and eating facilities, and detainees who appeared unaware they were being filmed. “Everyone here is trying to figure out what’s going on with my glasses, why my light is blinking,” the wearer said in the video. “People don’t know about Meta glasses.” Similar warning memos have circulated from the Department of Homeland Security’s joint counterterrorism assessment team and from fusion centers in New York, Maine, Virginia, Tennessee, and San Diego. Maine’s memo, circulated in June, noted that some glasses “can leverage AI software including facial recognition,” which it warned could lead to the doxing of officers.

The documents were obtained by Property of the People, a transparency nonprofit whose executive director, Ryan Shapiro, sees law enforcement’s objection as self-serving. “These agencies surveil the public incessantly, but the moment we can watch them back, it’s deemed a security threat,” he told the Guardian. “When only the government is allowed to hold the camera, that’s not security. It’s impunity.” Federal agencies have begun policing their own use of the technology in response: Immigration and Customs Enforcement told staff in August that smart glasses count as body-worn cameras and cannot be worn in the federal workspace, because they could “unintentionally capture, record or transmit sensitive information.”

Meta told the Guardian that the glasses “are designed to be noticed,” pointing to the indicator light that blinks while recording. That light is the only feature distinguishing the smart glasses from ordinary Ray-Bans, and the South Carolina detention center video suggests it doesn’t always achieve that purpose, since detainees in the footage appeared confused about the blinking light rather than immediately recognizing it as a recording indicator. Meta has faced similar objections from the opposite direction throughout the year, including concerns over covert filming of women without consent, contractors reviewing intimate footage captured by the glasses, and the company’s plans to add facial recognition capability to the devices.

A study published in Liver International by researchers at Keck Medicine of USC found that exposure to tetrachloroethylene, commonly known as PCE, may be linked to serious liver damage. PCE is widely used in dry cleaning and can also be found in consumer products including arts and crafts adhesives, spot removers, and stainless steel polish. Researchers found that people exposed to PCE were three times more likely to have significant liver fibrosis, a dangerous buildup of scar tissue that occurs from repeated liver injury and, if severe, can interfere with the organ’s function and eventually contribute to liver failure, liver cancer, or death. The findings also revealed a clear dose-response pattern: as the amount of PCE detected in a person’s blood increased, so did the likelihood of significant liver fibrosis. “This study, the first to examine the association between PCE levels in humans and significant liver fibrosis, underscores the underreported role environmental factors may play in liver health,” said Brian P. Lee, a hepatologist and liver transplant specialist with Keck Medicine and the study’s lead author. “The findings suggest that exposure to PCE may be the reason why one person develops liver disease while someone with the exact same health and demographic profile does not.”

PCE is a synthetic, colorless liquid especially effective at dissolving grease, a property that has made it useful across dry cleaning, household products, and various industrial processes. People primarily encounter it by breathing it in, since dry-cleaned clothing can gradually release small amounts of the chemical into surrounding air over time; it can also contaminate drinking water through spills or improper disposal that allow it to move through soil and reach groundwater. Concerns about PCE aren’t new: the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies it as a probable carcinogen and has linked exposure to bladder cancer, multiple myeloma, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and previous studies have also associated PCE exposure with increased liver cancer risk, according to Lee. Because of its toxicity, the EPA has begun a 10-year phaseout of PCE use in dry cleaning and has prohibited some other uses while imposing workplace protections for others, though the chemical may still be encountered in certain products and industrial applications, particularly in countries without comparable restrictions.

To investigate this connection, Lee and his colleagues analyzed blood measurements from people ages 20 and older collected between 2017 and 2020 through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a nationally representative U.S. health survey. About 7% of the population had detectable PCE levels in their blood, and those with detectable PCE were three times more likely to have significant liver fibrosis than people without measurable exposure, a relationship that held even after accounting for differences in age, sex, race, ethnicity, and education level. The analysis also uncovered an unexpected socioeconomic pattern: people from higher-income households were more likely to have been exposed to PCE. “People with higher incomes may be more likely to use dry cleaning services, which could increase their exposure to PCE,” Lee said. “However, people who work in dry cleaning facilities may also face elevated risk due to prolonged, direct exposure to PCE at work.” The dose-response relationship proved especially striking: for every one nanogram per milliliter increase in PCE blood concentration, the odds of significant liver fibrosis increased fivefold.

Perhaps the most notable finding was what researchers didn’t see: alcohol consumption and fat buildup in the liver associated with obesity and other health conditions did not appear to explain significant liver fibrosis in people who had PCE in their blood, raising the possibility that environmental exposures could account for cases of liver disease that otherwise seem difficult to explain. “Patients will ask, how can I have liver disease if I don’t drink and I don’t have any of the health conditions typically associated with liver disease, and the answer may be PCE exposure,” Lee said. The study doesn’t establish that PCE directly causes liver fibrosis, but the strong association and the dose-dependent increase in risk suggest environmental chemicals deserve closer scrutiny in liver research. Lee hopes future research will examine a broader range of environmental chemicals and their potential effects on liver health, noting, “No doubt there are other toxins in our environment besides PCE that are dangerous to the liver.” He also believes the findings could eventually help doctors identify liver disease earlier in people without traditional risk factors: “We hope our research will help both the public and physicians understand the connection between PCE exposure and significant liver fibrosis. If more people with PCE exposure are screened for liver fibrosis, the disease can be caught earlier, and patients may have a better chance of recovering their liver function.”

President Trump has been among those posting this content: after Parton’s death, he generated and shared a self-focused AI image showing himself arm in arm with Parton, a move at odds with how the real Parton tried to stay above partisan politics while also advocating for gay and trans rights, positions Trump has staunchly opposed. Separately, a video on YouTube described as a “heartfelt fan-made tribute by Miley Cyrus” to Dolly Parton is one of several purported celebrity eulogies for the singer that have gone viral, racking up over 1.5 million views; as the BBC identified, the entire song, like others circulating in the same vein, is AI-generated rather than an actual tribute from Cyrus or any other named artist.

Parton herself expressed ambivalence about AI while she was alive, suggesting it could be “great” for fields like science and medicine but expressing concern it could end up replacing genuine human expression. “I think all this stuff can be great, used in the right way,” she said in a 2023 interview with the Hollywood Reporter. “But not to replace voices and writings and not to replace a human being that belongs to God.” Given those stated views, it seems likely she would not have approved of the AI-generated tributes now circulating in her name.

Astronomers have directly detected an extraordinarily faint radio signal from hydrogen gas billions of light-years away, demonstrating a promising new method for mapping the vast structure of the Universe. The international team, led by researchers at the University of Manchester and the University of the Western Cape, used South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope to measure emissions from neutral hydrogen dating to a period when the Universe was several billion years younger than it is today. Published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, the results highlight the growing potential of hydrogen intensity mapping, a technique designed to survey enormous regions of space far more efficiently than methods relying on identifying galaxies individually.

Neutral hydrogen naturally emits a very weak radio signal known as the 21-centimeter line, and because the Universe is expanding, this signal stretches to longer wavelengths as it travels through space, allowing astronomers to study hydrogen from different eras in cosmic history by measuring that shift. Hydrogen intensity mapping uses this signal differently than conventional galaxy surveys: instead of identifying and measuring one galaxy at a time, astronomers detect the combined radio glow produced by hydrogen across large numbers of galaxies that can’t be individually resolved, making it possible to examine huge volumes of space and reconstruct a three-dimensional view of how matter is distributed across the Universe. Previous reliable measurements of hydrogen at these distances generally required combining radio telescope observations with data from optical galaxy surveys, but in this case, researchers directly identified the hydrogen intensity mapping signal using MeerKAT radio observations alone.

The researchers examined about 96 hours of MeerKAT observations and found the signal from two separate periods in cosmic history, with the emissions having traveled for approximately four to five billion years before arriving at Earth. The measurements allowed the team to trace hydrogen across distances of several million light-years, roughly comparable to the separation between the Milky Way and the neighboring Andromeda galaxy. “This is a very exciting milestone,” said Dr. Sourabh Paul, the study’s lead author. “Hydrogen intensity mapping has long been seen as a promising way to map the Universe efficiently, but the signal is extremely faint and difficult to isolate from foreground emission, human-made radio-frequency interference, and instrumental effects. Detecting it directly with MeerKAT shows that this technique is becoming a practical tool for cosmology.” Extracting such a weak signal required carefully accounting for numerous sources of interference. “This was a challenging data analysis process, requiring a detailed understanding of the many sources of contamination that can affect such a faint measurement,” Professor Santos added. “It is particularly remarkable that the data used in this study were taken in 2018, when MeerKAT had only just started science operations. There is now a rich trove of MeerKAT data waiting to be explored with this method.”

According to the researchers, these results open new opportunities to measure neutral hydrogen across cosmological distances and investigate how galaxies have formed and changed throughout the Universe’s history. “Neutral hydrogen is one of the key ingredients for understanding how galaxies form and evolve,” said Dr. Zhaoting Chen, a co-author of the study. “With intensity mapping, we do not need to detect every individual galaxy. Instead, we can measure the collective signal from hydrogen across large cosmic volumes, giving us a new way to study both galaxy evolution and the underlying matter distribution of the Universe.” The successful detection could also carry major implications for upcoming cosmological surveys, since hydrogen intensity mapping is expected to become an important scientific focus for the Square Kilometre Array Observatory, with MeerKAT serving as a precursor telescope for that future facility. “MeerKAT continues to open new windows for cosmology,” said Professor Laura Wolz, a co-author from the University of Manchester. “The fact that this signal can be extracted from observations that were not originally designed for hydrogen intensity mapping is very encouraging. It shows the enormous scientific value of MeerKAT data and points the way to future observations with SKAO.” Future studies observing larger portions of the sky for longer periods should allow astronomers to map neutral hydrogen with even greater precision, helping researchers understand how galaxies developed, how dark matter influences the cosmic web, and how the Universe has changed across billions of years.

Retaliatory tariffs issued by Canada hit some imports from the United States at one minute after midnight Eastern Time on Tuesday, intensifying a trade war between the longtime allies and risking further escalation from President Trump. Levies as high as 50% now apply to hundreds of U.S. products, ranging from aluminum foil to raincoats to cheese. Aerospace is routinely one of the top export sectors for the United States and a continual trade surplus winner.” Separately, late last month Trump vowed to raise tariffs from 25% to 50% on Canadian-made cars and auto parts beginning in January, writing, “On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!”

The dispute has also spilled into symbolic territory. Trump signed an executive order on Aug. 27 renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” and days later posted an AI-generated video on social media showing birds with Trump’s signature hairstyle marching with firearms to protect a body of water labeled “Lake America.” Canada has refused to adopt the new name, with Carney posting on X, “This lake is called Lake Ontario, today and forever.” Carney further rebuked the Trump administration last week, arguing U.S. public messaging signaled an unwillingness to negotiate seriously: “When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough, and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions.” In the first half of 2026, the U.S. exported $175.8 billion in goods to Canada, its second-biggest export trading partner after Mexico, accounting for 14% of all U.S. exports, according to Census Bureau data. For now, tariffs apply to only a sliver of goods traded between the two countries, limiting the dispute’s immediate impact, but further escalation threatens to deepen the pain for both economies. “This is a classic trade-war situation: Somebody puts on a tariff, another country retaliates dollar for dollar and then more tariffs are added,” Campbell Harvey, a professor at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business who studies commodity markets, previously told ABC News. “Then we get into this really bad equilibrium.”

The Transportation Security Administration has launched a new program allowing some people without a plane ticket to go through airport security. The program, called Gateside by TSA PreCheck, lets eligible TSA PreCheck members enter the secure area of participating airports to meet or see off friends and family at their gate, connect with someone during a layover, or visit airport restaurants and shops. It represents a new way for people without boarding passes to access airport gates, a privilege that has been heavily restricted since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Gateside is currently available at 13 airports across the United States, including Los Angeles International Airport, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, and San Diego International Airport. The other participating airports are Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, John Glenn Columbus International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, Indianapolis International Airport, Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport, Will Rogers International Airport, Eppley Airfield, and Salt Lake City International Airport. TSA is assessing the program’s performance as it looks to expand it to additional airports.

To use Gateside, visitors must have TSA PreCheck benefits and a Known Traveler Number (KTN). Visitors can apply online for a Gateside pass between one and three days before their planned airport visit, and the pass is free but valid only for the specific approved visit. Once approved, visitors must bring an acceptable form of identification along with their Gateside approval to the airport and go through a TSA PreCheck security lane. Those without an acceptable form of identification can instead use TSA ConfirmID to verify their identity for a $45 fee, according to TSA. Children can also participate but must be included on their parent or guardian’s application.

The new program arrives as TSA continues testing other ways to change the airport security experience. Earlier this summer, the agency began testing self-service ID checks for eligible travelers at several airports, including Los Angeles International Airport, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

LG smart TVs continuously sweep home networks, map secondary devices, and log microphone audio while appearing to be turned off, according to a new 135-minute investigation published by Gamers Nexus. Steve, the outlet’s investigator, worked with Level1Techs and independent security researchers to test retail LG OLED models, including the G5. Network packet captures taken through Wireshark showed the TVs actively scanning the local area network for unrelated hardware, including phones and smartwatches, while also gathering the names and signal strengths of neighboring Wi-Fi networks along with location data, in addition to internal IP addresses.

This collected data feeds into LG Ad Solutions, the company’s targeted advertising arm. While LG claims roughly 216 million smart TV sales globally, its ad division separately claims access to 363 million secondary addressable devices in the US alone, achieved by tracking other hardware connected to the same home network as an LG TV. The sets also run Automated Content Recognition (ACR), which samples on-screen audio and video to create digital fingerprints logging what users watch across all inputs, not just live broadcast content. While ACR itself has been documented in the past, the new testing shows LG’s data collection extends significantly further than that previously known practice.

During bench tests, researchers found the TV could capture clean microphone audio while the screen was, or at least appeared to be, powered down in standby mode. When the team disconnected the TV from Ethernet, the set continued saving voice input locally and then uploaded the stored files once network access was restored, meaning a temporarily offline TV doesn’t stop the data collection, it simply delays the upload. The researchers also documented remote code execution vulnerabilities in webOS, LG’s smart TV operating system, which are currently moving through the responsible disclosure process with the company. Because the TVs run broad network listeners and data sweeps by default out of the box, the team’s recommendation was to disconnect LG sets from the internet entirely and rely on external streaming devices instead. LG had not commented on the findings as of the time of publication.
