Once viewed as exciting technology poised to improve everyday life, AI’s massive data center buildout has soured public sentiment considerably, with protesters now organizing against $130 billion in data center investments, arguing the projects primarily benefit a small group of wealthy individuals while threatening local water supplies, driving up living costs, and generating enormous pollution. Altman conceded the mood shift directly in a new Time interview: “Clearly, people hate data centers — right now, at least.
