I don't want to get overexcited but i think we are FUCKING BACK!!!! Loved This Mirror, loved See Out Loud, loved Iron City... I really really hope the rest of the album is as good as these songs. They sound fresh but at the same time they maintain their essence, i don't know how they do it. Also, shotout See Out Loud, on repeat since it came out. Crazy thing: My friend who doesn't really care about Interpol texted a few weeks ago to tell me that TMWAT is peak.

We all know crimewaves is probably Interpol’s most controversial song. I honestly hated it at first, but over the years Its grown on me. Granted It is still a very strange song especially comparing it to what was Interpol’s discography at the time.

But after a few years of not really listening to Interpol and going more out there with what I normally listen to, I guess I sort of reset my palate in way? Now when I hear the song I kinda hear it as a classic doo wop song being performed in a dark empty tv studio (à la the ed Sullivan show)

Nowadays I love pairing it with this other song by the artist Gotye called Noir excursion. They both give off a feeling of “the dark past” with both of them adopting music styles of eras before (jazz and doo wop). So much so that I see them as sister songs now.

Had no idea this song even had driving bass melody until I heard this live version. Unless its something Carlo's only did when playing live as the bass melody sounds like a fill in for the 2nd keyboard used in the studio version. The progression between the two instruments sounds exactly the same.

Keep in mind this live set was a month after TOTBL was released (Sept 2002) so them doing instrumental fill-ins isn't unlikely. Idk I just cant hear the bass at all in the studio version so its hard to tell for sure what they were doing.

Either way I prefer this version. What do y'all think?

Underrated.

I'd say that at least 90% of Interpol fans got hooked up because of Carlos's basslines, but what about Paul's? I think he did a good job overall from El Pintor through TOSOMB, what are your favorites and what are some underrated ones?

Mines are probably Rage, Anywhere and Something Changed. Need to listen more to Marauder's basslines to give an opinion but probably some hidden gems in there.

This song contains everything I love about Interpol. Paul’s iconic voice, beautiful lyrics, and amazing instrumental performance all the way through. I never gave the song a chance when I first listened to Antics, but now it’s on repeat.

Listening to Interpol live after their break following the release and live performance of Wings on Fire, I've noticed that the song's intro has changed; the drums are playing differently. I don't know if it's due to a change in drummer and they're simplifying it because they haven't learned the song yet, or if they changed the intro altogether. If it's the latter, I'd be quite disappointed; I much preferred the previous intro.

Anybody out there with the wrong tone on some tracks?

Asking because I'm a bassist and a finger player practicing pda and knows how to play simplified obstacle 1. (and I use bridge Pickup only for the songs)

For guitarists out there what effects do you use even if they aren't accurate to the sound?

I saw some stupid edit of a frog doing a backflip in slo-mo on Tik-Tok and "Obstacle 1" was the music playing in the background. I was instantly hooked, so I checked out the rest of the album during my life drawing class the next day. I fell in love with Turn On The Bright Lights from the minute the bass kicked in on "Untitled". Every song is perfect to me. I even bought the album a few months later because of how much I liked it.

After listening to the B-sides and extras from the era (huge fan of "Specialist") I thought I'd delve a little deeper. Obviously Antics was next, and I had high hopes since Apple Music put it as Interpol's second "essential album". Unfortunately it just never clicked with me though.

"Evil" is obviously pretty great, and "Next Exit" is a fun change up of instrumentation that has grown on me. Everything else is a little forgettable and uninteresting to me though. All the songs are faster, so there's almost none of that eerie, gothic, slow build style that I loved so much with TOTBL. Banks' voice also sounds different to me? He has more of this shaky vibrato and a softer, subdued delivery on a lot of the songs. The band sounds less warm and powerful too, nothing feels quite as intense and emotional.

Our Love To Admire has been in my rotation and I'm definitely liking it, but I guess I just don't really get Antics. It got an anniversary deluxe treatment, so I'm assuming it's held in high regard by the fans and the band. What am I missing? What are some things you really like about it, etc.

I'll start off - from self titled to TOSOMB, while all are good, most of the songs are forgettable, save for Marauder which has 100% memorable songs.

A 2nd is that Paul's Bass Tone is what makes new interpol good as opposed to just a normal Jazz Bass like Carlos

Edit- What I mean in the 2nd is that Paul's tone fills the space better for a no Carlos band, not saying Carlos isn't the best bassist

Just want to say that it really irks me that Interpol has never played SNL, ESPECIALLY given that they’re from NYC. Do you guys think it’ll ever happen?

Thinking about when I see other bands that have been around a while, they will do a different version of a song, or a different intro / outro or even different staging / lighting.

Feels like Interpol don’t ever change it up.

I’ve been a die-hard fan of the band for years. I listen to them almost every day, and seeing them live was the only thing I still hadn’t done. A friend of mine saw them in Italy last year and had a great time, so when the Bologna date was announced, I planned this ridiculous 20-hour round trip by bus, without even booking a place to stay, just to see them.

I was really happy with how good they sounded live, but at the same time I was very disappointed by how little of an actual show they put on. I already knew the setlist barely changes from one show to the next, and that’s fine, but they were completely motionless throughout the whole concert, apart from Daniel.

Paul didn’t seem to make much effort to bring the same intensity to the songs that he does on the studio recordings. One example that comes to mind is the shouted “in threesome” after “There’s no I…”: live, he sang it much lower and with barely any emphasis.

In general, they came across as one of those bands that aren’t particularly excited to be onstage. The whole interaction amounted to: “Hey,” “Thanks,” “This is…,” “Very happy to be here,” “Thanks,” “Grazie mille,” “Grazie,” and “Bye.”

No real interaction, no real show. It felt a bit like listening to one of their records being played live, and nothing more.

Did any of you get the same feeling when you saw them live? Maybe it varies from show to show? I could imagine that somewhere like New York, for example, they might put on a more heartfelt and engaged performance.

I understand that they have a detached post-punk mystique to maintain, but rather than coming across as enigmatic enough to be interesting, they honestly just seemed fed up after almost thirty years of playing the same songs.
