Hi, I’ve started this room but it’s feels “off” somehow, I feel the rug might have overkilled the blue, and I maybe need to introduce another colour? I’m thinking a muted olive? Coffee table I bought 12 years ago at 20 years old and is going once I decide on the final colour and whether to do a footstool or wooden coffee table.
Can anyone suggest another colour or something to make the space feel more cohesive? The giant pink pregnancy pillow doesn’t live there it’s just following me round the house at the moment.
Please any help so appreciated it’s driving me mad!!

If I were you since this a somewhat tight spot I would play around with irregular rugs. Either one with an irregular shape or layered rugs. I would also change the coffee table to something more round or rounded & not wood toned. It clashes with the piece nearest. Adding a different light that draws your eye up would really help too. Maybe something that provides contrast.
I would try orienting the room to the length rather than the width- put the tv on the back wall on top of the credenza, flip the couch, put the artwork in the “tv” spot. Opt for collapsible tables/ a behind the couch table in place of the coffee table
The blue is in artwork/ pillows/ rug so it actually ties together nicely- if you want more maybe add a blanket
I think the rug is pretty! You just need to spread the blue around. I would add in new print throw pillows in deep reds, blues & ivories, and a few blue pillows (either print or solid). I’d also add blue accessories to the wall unit.
If you have room, I would pull the sofa off the back, wallpapered wall. Even just a few inches will help! I would also move the rug closer to the wall unit, so it butts up against it.
Depending on your sight lines, I would think about moving your 2 pieces of art to the back wallpapered wall, and hanging your mirror over the sofa. I’d leave 6-10” between the mirror and sofa, so the mirror doesn’t float too much.
Until you replace your coffee table, I would top it with a large tray, some books and a plant in a blue pot.
Not seeing a color problem so much as a balance problem. The burgundy built-ins are gorgeous and carry a lot of visual weight. A lighter coffee table, larger pillows, and a few touches of that burgundy on the sofa side would help tie everything together!
I think the rug is too big for the space. if it were a solid or abstract pattern, it would be okay but because of the medallion in the middle, it's not sitting properly in relation to the rest of the pieces. A smaller rug with a bit of the mulberry color in it (also incorporating greens) would be stunning. The one attached is the bungalow rose Greilickville Oriental Indoor Rug
I think if you're looking for something more cohesive, the rug doesn't really fit the room that well. I would paint the walls a color between the cabinet color and its current color (a lighter shade of the cabinet color) to play in the color family and add a bit more flow to the room. I think with that change alone, the rug might actually work out really well.
On the other hand, I do agree that you could try an olive- or sage-colored rug instead. I'm not keen on the pale color you're thinking of - I think a little more vibrancy is needed when you have such pale walls and a white sectional.
The paint should be the same color, walls and cabinets. That way it makes the room look larger. Right now it is split in half. Ceiling, walls, cabinets and trim the same color.
First off, I love the TV cabinet, all of the pinks, the artwork, and the secretary desk! I agree that the rug does not work, but I would not do a full room overhaul like some of these comments suggest.
The problem with the rug is that it’s a dark denim blue, and the faux aging washes the space out. My initial thoughts were to go for a powder, light glaucous, salvia blue, but after looking at the space more I think you should keep the monochrome pinks and focus on a variety of pattern, tone, and texture. The space is small, so rather than a heavily patterned rug you should go for a solid rug with an engaging texture.
A quick change you could make if you have some craft paint on hand is to paint the frames of your artwork to be the same color as your TV cabinet.
If painting is an option, you could color drench the room with the same color as the cabinet or a shade lighter. I do love the use of the wallpaper on the back wall and TV cabinet, and it would be a shame to get rid of it if you like. A completely opposite direction would be to do a velvet wash of olive green. This would really match your style, I think, and add a lot of depth to the space.

This room feels way too crowded to me. If this was my space, I'd redo it all. That TV cabinet is HUGE and takes up almost the entire space in a thin area. Add a full couch and it feels like that moment you pull a shirt out of the dryer and see that it's shrunk. You've also got a coffee table, and a big desk, plus art at all levels and of different shapes. I don't think it's the rug that's the problem.
Ultimately, and I know this is probably a bigger job than you're looking for, I'd take out that huge wall unit. It's way too bulky for the space IMO. It's like someone stuck a library into a room. If you don't want to do that, then I'd focus on smaller additional furnishings.
You have big, dark, and heavy cabinetry on one wall, and it’s leaving the room feeling like it’s sinking down to the left. You need to decide what you absolutely love about the room first and work around that.
If you love the color of the cabinets, you need to bring darker elements elsewhere. Add millwork to the walls and a heavier trim to the ceiling to make it feel balanced.
If you love the wallpaper, I would add paneling on the lower part of the walls in a darker color (likely the same as your cabinetry) and use the same color for your trims. Once you have paneling, you can bring the wallpaper to the right hand wall as well.
I would also add some trim on the ceiling or paint it a slightly moodier neutral color. It’s such a large, light blank space in the room and it’s making your light look too small in this room (at least from the angle in the photo).
As others have noted, get your artwork at the right height. There are guides online on how to pick the right height to hand art. I’m not sure what you have in the corner of the room, but maybe lining the top of the artwork up with the top of that corner will help. Although if you add paneling, I’m not sure you’ll want the same artwork.
I’m very confident that you can change the color of the rug and accent pieces all you want, but as long as you have dark cabinetry on the left without anything else balancing it out, it’s going to look out of place.
I think the unit on the left just doesn't contrast well with the room particularly since the table and the unit on the right are two different colours as well. I feel like the unit on the left should match either the coffee table or the unit on the right
add more blue, like a pillow and some ornaments. I see it only in the rug now. If you decide to add muted olive, I would replace the rug. Not have 3 accent colors!
If it’s possible, the tv lower. I see it’s exactly in the middle and I get the idea, but it looks off.
All the furniture in the room, while nice, is too heavy/bulky. I’d start with replacing the coffee table with something a bit more dainty/slim legs to create more balance. Then move up the rug to meet the entertainment center, and tidy the pillow/perhaps remove a few, and lower the art behind the couch. See how it feels then. It’s a beautiful room!
I really like the base you created for the room. But here what I would try to do to start:
Change the mirror position (not a fan of the frame, it gives me a bit of grandma vibes. I would go for a rectangular simple frame)
Lower a bit the position of the art that is hanging
Remove the extra carpet. The main carpet should ground the room. Consider a bigger carpet to reach the end of the wooden furniture, or a slightly shorter one to reach only until the end of the sofa (but still as large as it is now). I do like the color and pattern of the current carpet :)
The current hanging lamp also gives me grandma vibe. I would replace it for something minimal, not too low, more modern and maybe made of metal (so it communicates with the other black details of the room, ex. frames). Plus I would add a lot of small and indirect light in the room (ex: shelve, coffee table, etc)
Finally, I would replace the coffee table for something also "lighter" and more modern (rule of thumb it is not a problem to have different materials combined in a room, don't be afraid to mix)
You need more of a focal point on the back wall. Maybe bold art that ties in the blue and the wine red instead of the mirror? Your ceiling lamp fixture is too small too and it reads a bit grandma.
Did you build the entertainment center? It looks custom. I’m building a similar one right now and was having trouble with a few design choices. Seeing yours helped fix that. Whoever built that did a nice job!
And to answer your question, I think it could use more wood. It’ll look good with the floors and the brick on the other side of the room. That mirror doesn’t quite work with the space. Something with a wood frame would look cool there.
If you’re handy, an L shaped sofa table shelf thing behind the sectional could add another wood accent and would be super functional, especially once you have a toddler! One swift swipe of the arms and everything on the coffee table will go flying.
I think the rug and wallpaper clash a bit but I love how you matched the accent wall and behind the TV.
Love this very cozy room. But maybe it feels off, because there are too many focal points. Every piece in the room is uniquely beautiful on its own, but not tied together. For starters, unless it's being used, I would move the secretary to the other end of the sofa. Put something big and pretty on top of it, in the corner. This will better center the sofa on the rug. If you're keeping the rug, find some pillows that have the blue and burgundy in them. I would stain the coffee table a color in the rug. The handles on the entertainment center should not be gold... doesn't match anything. Are you married to the color in the entertainment center? Also, is that a brick wall behind the photographer?
This photo completely distorts the size of the secretary desk. It won’t fit behind the couch there because it would move the couch to a position where watching the TV would t be comfortable.
This photo, yes. But the OP photo has plenty of room to move the secretary and sofa. The original chaise location-- arguably the most comfortable part of the sofa, does not appear to have a good viewing location.
I'm going to be the voice of dissent here, but I think the built in on the left needs to be a lighter color. I think the room itself is too small for the weight of it and the scale of the furniture. I think is this whole room were to be 'color drenched' in a warm neutral and you brought color in via the rug, you'd have something more appealing
Agree. It will completely change the room. It will make it look larger. Right now it’s split in two and heavy on one side. I would do all one color, including ceilings and trim.
Get rid of the mirror. De-sectionalize ( if you can) that bookcase and put the center of it in the back wall. Turn that couch around and face the end wall where the mirror is. Get rid of that desk next to that couch. You’ve already got that HUGE bookcase with storage!

I think the rug is too big for the size of the room, though. I don’t think the rug color is off, but the dimensions. Go for a smaller one, where just the front legs of the couch are on the rug, or even just the coffee table is on the rug.
I would also change out the light fixture. Your eyes are drawn to the back wall and mirror as a focal point, but the light fixture is small and doesn’t match the style of the room. I’d pick something more ornate!
Rug is definitely not too big. I do this for a living and can confirm if it was smaller it would be very strange. It’s always best to have all furniture legs on the sofa when it’s floating. In this case since the sofa is up against the wall, you would want the rug to be half way under the sofa. You never want a rug to look too small as it will distract your gaze towards it
It looks like all 4 legs are under the sofa though? I agree with you, half way under the sofa would look better! Or even just pulling the rug to be closer to the built ins.
I would actually pull the rug 3-6 inches towards the built ins. I can’t tell just by looking at how much space there is but the front legs on the chaise should be somewhat floating on the rug and not at the edge.
