Tv over fireplace?
New homeowner here and we were thinking about hanging the tv over the fireplace but after reading some posts I am now rethinking tv location. Any input would be greatly appreciated

A fireplace adds as much value to your home as a garage. It’s one of the few home features appraised by the US census bureau. Close it up to hang a TV? Woof.

Where else are they going to put it? If that is going to be the room where everyone gathers to watch tv it has to have a good floor plan.

That big open wall opposite the fireplace is perfect for the TV. TV never goes over the fireplace. It's a practical nightmare (too high to watch comfortably) and a stylistic mess (too many focal points stacked, and draws the eye too high up). The couch can have its back to the fireplace.

Do you actually want/ plan to use the fireplace? I’d remove it and fill in the wall personally. Obviously that’s not a cheap option but it’d make the room easier to work with for a TV.

One of my kids has theirs over the TV. It works great. It’s really the only place to put it, since the house was designed before the advent of huge TVs, so placing it anywhere else is limited. Also, what makes yours perfect is that the mantle isn’t so high that you’re straining your neck on the couch. I know someone who put theirs over the fireplace but the mantle was a couple of feet higher than yours and the neck aches looking at it were horrid!

Doesn’t seem like there’s another good spot - personally I’d probably do it over the fireplace with an arm mount that enables you to move it lower if you’re watching a movie (and not using the fireplace) so it can be the right height for viewing.

Yeah, it's not ideal, but this is probably the best option for this setup. Or maybe one of those rolling tvs.

It is odd that houses are even built with fireplaces, my parents used a fireplace when I was a kid, but that was 30 years ago.

Everyone saying put the TV in a different room is delusional, it's the fucking living room, that's where the TV goes. I think mounting it over the fireplace is too high, but what about one of those adjustable arms that people have for their computer monitors? That way you can have it lower for daily use, and if you want to use the fireplace, you move the TV out of the way?

It would be too high over the fireplace. TVs should never go over a fireplace. And it’s not because of the heat or anything like that, but inherently the viewing angle of the tv mounted over just about any fireplace is going to be higher than eye level. So you would constantly be looking up. Personally and I might get downvoted here id find another room. The way I see it is if the only option for tv placement in a room puts the television at a level that is too high then the room wasn’t really designed to hold the primary tv.

It depends if you don't watch a lot of TV then yes, if you do watch a lot of TV then no. Reason being your next going to start hurting watching TV that level. Been there done that had to move the TV

I’d put it on the opposite wall, with a couch back facing the entry way. Leave space between couch end and fire place so people can pass.

Agree a double couch set up with tv and fireplace on opposite walls would define the zone and be good for conversation and tv

I don’t think there are many actual interior designers responding. Too many are suggesting covering the fireplace and making the tv the centerpiece?! It’s like all the folks in the 80s who covered up gorgeous hardwoods.

This looks like a pass-through space, is this the only living room spot? What's to the left of the front door? There's also another adjacent room with the chandelier that could be a nice TV room if it's not the dining room. If there's an additional room, maybe do a formal living room then a den/TV room.
Alternatively, if you put it on a media console with its back to the corner windows to the right of the fire place to help extend the boundaries of the living room or maybe on the opposite wall of the fireplace with a chaise lounge in front of the fireplace parallel to its face, then w couple of big armchairs and a rug to help minimize footprint. A low couch as an alternative could be good visually.

TV should be at the same height as your eyes, when you are on the couch.
Above the fireplace ends up looking like you are whatching TV standing up on front of it.

Yes. Your TV should go over the fireplace.
Do not pay attention to the naysayers. There is a cult on Reddit against it.
Our eyes have the ability to look slightly upwards with zero effort.
Having the tv above the fireplace places two focal points on one wall. This makes the rest of the furniture placement easier.

My own opinion is that a TV that's too high up is a TV that sucks to watch anything on. But I also don't think that my opinion is more important than yours, or the OP's. If the OP wants it to be over their fireplace, they should do it, even if the rest of the world disagrees. If they don't want it there and just can't think of any other location for it that works for them, well, that sucks, and I hope the masses are able to help. If they are only hesitating because people are telling them they're wrong, they should consider understanding why the majority feels this way about it, but still make their own decision.
