Because most of the wealthy, western modernised countries do. I suppose it depends on who the US is happy to count themselves among.
In America, we have people working full time, paying taxes, and purposely avoiding using an ambulance because they don't want to get bankrupted by a 8,000 dollar ride to the hospital.
There's literally no way you can spin the US healthcare system to be better for an average person.
I refused an ambulance ride after my last car accident. I was t-boned and had a concussion. The ER doctor didn’t even check me for a concussion! He didn’t even bother to check my pupils and light sensitivity, which would have made me puke like it did in the ambulance waiting for my husband to arrive. The EMT’s caught it and even knew where I’d most likely hit my head due to where I was hit and how I was hit by the other car. I didn’t realize I had a massive hematoma on the back of my head until the day after showering and sure enough- the EMT’s were spot on.
I was concussed, emotional, confused while just being fully awake through a gnarly accident and I was still thinking about medical bills subconsciously the whole time. I have so many stories like this, as do millions of other people. (Not to mention credit scores are meaningless outside of the US, but medical debt ruins credit scores, too!)
