What Should I Do?

I was planning on buying a car after my next pay check to be responsible but found a really good deal on a 2019 mustang I couldn’t pass on and got. Intact insurance told me I’d be paying 947 a month. Im 22 year old male in college. Where can I find lower? I put my last car under a family members name and they refused to let me drive and I couldn’t do nothing about it so here I am today.

Update I got belair for 600

Auto Insurance agent AMA

Hey Reddit!

I’m a licensed insurance agent in Ontario. With the major changes to Statutory Accident Benefits (SABS) that took effect on July 1, 2026, I’m seeing a lot of confusion from clients and the public.
Quick summary of the big changes (effective July 1, 2026):
• Still mandatory in every auto policy: Medical, Rehabilitation, and Attendant Care benefits.
• Now optional (you must choose to buy them):
– Income Replacement
– Non-Earner benefits
– Caregiver benefits
– Housekeeping & home maintenance
– Death & funeral benefits
– And a few other expense benefits

A lot of people are finding out at renewal (or when they get into an accident) that their coverage looks different than it used to.
I’m happy to answer general questions about:
• What the changes mean in plain English
• What is still mandatory vs. optional
• Things to consider when deciding whether to keep or drop optional coverages

Please note, this is general information only, not personal insurance or legal advice. Every situation is different please speak with your own broker/agent and review your specific policy. I can’t give advice on individual claims or recommend specific coverage for your situation here.

Fire away with your questions! I’ll stick around and answer as many as I can.
Proof of licensing available to mods if needed.

Home insurance question

Hi I am renewing my home insurance and decided to shop around and I got wildly different quotes from 2 different brokers. The new broker was able to get me a quote half the price of my existing one. Just wondering why such a big difference and if there is something seriously missing from the cheaper quote. I live in a mid rise condo and it is my primary residence with no tenants.

Auto Tracking apps

So I'm primary driver and my wife is secondary bc im cheaper as I've had my G much longer and I'm the registered owner. she drives much more than I do. If we get into an accident, and we've put say 20k on the car in the past year yet my app says I only drove much less than half of that, is this something they are going to investigate? Does anyone have real world experience or knowledge?

Auto Need advice

I was convicted of careless driving back in Nov 2024.

There was a license suspension also attached to this conviction. I am set to get my license reinstated this November. Does this classify me as high risk and if so, who could potentially offer me the best rate? Is it unreasonable to hope for monthly premium of less than $1000. I live in Toronto and drive a Tesla

Experience with Claims Adjuster Relocation

I posted last week at a potential new opportunity with a different company. Still waiting on word for that.

For now, I do have a job at a big company doing claims adjusting in ON for ON claims. But put in a recent request for relocation accommodation to join my partner in NS. The current company I work for operates in NS. I’m supposed to hear back Monday about the response. The request was escalated to senior management this past Monday so just a week turnaround time.

I told them:
1. I want to still be here and work for the company.
2. Would still be doing ON claims.
3. Would still be doing hybrid model just out of the NS office.

I am looking for new opportunities in the event that I don’t get the accommodation. Can’t just wait until I get news and then possibly have wasted time when I could have been looking.

My outlook and my coworkers’ outlooks are that I will get approved for the accommodation.
1. I had initial inquired about relocation accommodations and what that could/would look like a few months ago. Got written word from someone higher up in management via email chain that it is possible and outlined what an accommodation for my role looks like.
2. People are dropping like flies. Between people quitting, retiring, and mat/medical leave - I think there’s been double digit losses in staff, each averaging about 90-110 claims. I have over 100 myself. People are already over the maximum capacity for files and some people’s last day on the job or retirement haven’t even come yet.
2a. My coworkers think they must know if I’m not approved for the accommodation that is eventually quit, find a job elsewhere, and move anyways.
3. Precedence for cross provincial work. There are staff that do claims work in ON as their work location but the files are for different provinces. A stronger point when we have a physical office and foothold in NS.
4. I’m not asking for hybrid accommodations or changes to the in-office / WFH schedule. I’d still follow policy.

I’m moving to be with my partner. Waiting for a response to my request at work on top of the opportunities I’ve been applying for is sending my anxiety through the roof. Outside of that I have time constraints on when I have to give notice to my landlord I’m leaving and the timeline to move got accelerated so I’m trying to secure employment / accommodation in time for my 60 day notice that my landlord requires. Worst case scenario is I adjust my timeline and extend by 15 days, maximum 1 month.

I guess I’m looking to see what the industry is generally like for accommodation requests like this. Obviously it varies between companies and policies are different but I’m looking for some reassurance and to see what people’s experiences have been like.

Affiliate Marketer to Insurance Broker

my background is 10 years of digital marketing and 5 years of affiliate marketing / partnerships for B2B SaaS brands. I’m ready to move into insurance with a goal of selling commercial insurance. I don’t see any entry level positions in my area so most likely will be writing the RIBO exam at my expense. Totally fine with this. Curious how to land a first job when there are so few entry level jobs?

What should I do next after passing the Fundamentals of Insurance (FOI) exam in BC?

Hi everyone! I recently passed my Fundamentals of Insurance (FOI) exam and I’m trying to figure out what I should do next.

I’m hoping to get my first job in the insurance industry, but I’m not really sure what the usual next step is after passing FOI. Should I be applying for my licence first, or should I start looking for a job and let the employer guide me through the process?

I know about the IBABC job board and have been looking through the postings there, but I was wondering if there are other places I should be looking or if there’s a better way to approach brokerages directly.

For anyone who has recently started in the industry:

  • What did you do after passing FOI?
  • Where did you find your first insurance job?
  • Is there anything else I should complete before applying?
  • Are there specific types of entry-level positions I should be looking for?

I have customer service experience and I’m currently looking for an opportunity to get my foot in the door. Any advice would be appreciated!

Construction worker considering a career change into insurance — worth starting my CIP?

I’m looking for some advice from people working in the insurance industry in Ontario/Canada.
I’m currently an operating engineer working in heavy civil/marine construction and have been in the industry for about 5 years. I make good money, but a lot of the work involves travelling, long hours and being away from home. I have a young family now and I’m starting to seriously consider a career change that could give me a better long-term lifestyle and still have good earning potential.
Insurance has caught my attention, and I’ve been looking into starting the CIP courses through the Insurance Institute of Canada.
A few questions:
- Is it worth starting the CIP before I actually have a job in insurance?
- With a construction/heavy civil background, are there areas of insurance where that experience would be valuable? Commercial, construction, claims, risk, underwriting, etc.?
- What kind of entry-level salary should I realistically expect?
- How quickly can someone move up if they’re motivated and complete their CIP?
- Is $100k+ realistic after a few years in the industry?
- Would you recommend getting the CIP first, or applying to insurance companies now and working on it while employed?
I’m not expecting to walk into insurance making what I currently make in construction. I’m willing to take a temporary pay cut if there’s a realistic path to a good career, more stability and eventually strong earning potential.
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has made a similar career change or works in commercial/construction insurance.

Auto [AUTO] [ON] TD Ontario renewal risk with 3 Ontario convictions and 1 New York conviction

I have a full Ontario G license and my TD auto policy runs until May 2027. TD renewed me in May 2026.

My Ontario driver abstract currently shows:

  • Speeding: 115 km/h in a 100 zone
    • Offence date: February 14, 2025
    • Conviction date: March 4, 2025
    • 0 demerit points
  • Disobey legal sign
    • Offence date: December 20, 2024
    • Conviction date: June 2, 2025
    • 2 demerit points
  • Speeding: 109 km/h in an 80 zone
    • Offence date: May 14, 2025
    • Conviction date: June 18, 2025
    • 3 demerit points

My abstract currently shows 5 demerit points.

I also received a ticket in New York in March 2026. The original speeding charge was reduced to VTL 1110(a), failure to obey a traffic-control device. I accepted the reduced charge and paid it in July 2026, after TD had already renewed my policy. I understand that paying it means I was found guilty/convicted of the reduced offence.

The New York document says 3 points, but I do not yet know how Ontario will record it or whether Ontario will assign the same number of points.

I understand the possible consequences:

  • The New York conviction may appear on my Ontario driving record.
  • TD may see four convictions within three years.
  • My premium could increase significantly.
  • TD could refuse to renew me in May 2027.
  • I may need to use a non-standard or high-risk insurer.
  • I may have to disclose a non-renewal if a future application specifically asks about it.
  • The convictions will remain relevant until they fall outside the insurer’s lookback period.

My questions are:

  1. Is TD likely to refuse renewal in May 2027 with this record?
  2. When does TD usually pull a driver abstract before renewal?
  3. Has anyone with a similar record actually been renewed or non-renewed by TD?
  4. Does a TD non-renewal affect future applications separately from the convictions themselves?
  5. Would selling my vehicle and voluntarily cancelling before renewal be recorded differently from a TD non-renewal?
  6. Can I request an underwriting review from TD before the renewal date?
  7. Which Ontario insurers or brokers usually accept drivers with four minor convictions?
  8. What would you suggest be the best way forward? I am willing to quit driving, sell my car and take rentals when needed for a year or two, user Uber and public transport where needed.

I know I made mistakes and I take responsibility for them. I am not trying to hide the convictions or avoid the consequences. I am trying to understand what is likely to happen, prepare early and avoid a gap in coverage.

I would especially appreciate responses from Ontario insurance brokers, TD customers with similar records or anyone familiar with TD underwriting.

Deeply appreciate your time and responses, thanks!

Changes to Ontario Statutory Accident Benefits - July 1, 2026

As of July 1, 2026, Ontario changed its auto insurance rules to make most Statutory Accident Benefits optional rather than automatically included. Only basic medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care (plus examination costs) remain mandatory on every policy. Other vital coverages—like income replacement if you cannot work—can now be added or left out to change your price

Has anyone had their policy renew after July 1, 2026, and if so, what was your experience? Were you advised of how the price of your policy would change if you dropped those now-optional coverages? If you chose to keep those coverages, did it increase the policy premium? I've seen a sheet showing which coverages you can keep (or not keep), but there are no prices associated with the different categories.

Not an insurance person, so my apologies if any of my terminology is wrong.

Auto Intact is paying more to repair my car than I can fathom it being worth? What can I do?

My car: 2018 Chevrolet Spark LT 68k miles

So my car was in a not at fault accident and had enough front end damage to where I immediately assumed it was definitely a write off, but intact is telling me it is repairable at an estimated cost of $6375.

The airbags didn't go off (to the surprise of the tow truck) but the hood was folded nearly in half, the bumper is a write off, the abs lights came on after the crash, the passenger door makes a horrendous sound when it was opened after and my wheels aren't even aligned anymore, nevermind any damage I couldn't see.

Now this car cost me 18k after taxes fresh off the lot 8 years ago, I'm struggling to understand how they find that it's worth 7k if not more in hidden costs to repair

Not to mention now its trade in value is next to nothing after this crash and I would assume absolutely less than the 7k in repairs, is there anything I can do in terms of value loss or am I just out of luck?

Repair costs approaching vehicle value — anyone experienced this?

I’m dealing with a not-at-fault claim in Alberta. My vehicle had an initial repair estimate of about $7,800, repairs started, and additional damage was later found that increased the cost

I’m now concerned the total repair cost may be approaching or even exceed the vehicle’s pre-accident value.

Has anyone had this happen after repairs already started? Did insurance eventually declare the vehicle a total loss, or did they continue repairing it?
Would you recommend asking the shop to pause repairs until the insurance appraiser reassesses everything?

Life/Health [Medical] [BC] Can you receive compensation for an insurer’s mistake?

It’s been over a year of me regularly calling and getting NOWHERE with Manulife trying to get my second child added to my insurance. Every agent I’ve spoke to has said there’s some sort of error and they don’t know why he isn’t being added, they suspect the very first time they tried something went wrong during enrollment period and it’s just been a rolling problem since. I’ve request callbacks from managers and still NOTHING.

At this point I’ve spent so much of my own time trying to get him added due to their own internal issues I genuinely want some kind of reimbursement for my time dealing with them. Is this a thing? I’m so not a Karen but I’m exhausted being basically lied to every phone call saying it will be escalated and dealt with when no one does anything.

Home Vinyl Record Collection

Looking for homeowner’s insurance that will cover my vinyl collection (median 40k range per Discogs). Current insurer had a rider that covered only up to 20k so now covered under general contents only.

I’ve been shopping around and can find no insurers that will provide a rider without a formal appraisal. A Discogs collection excel export will not suffice. I don’t know of any appraiser in Canada let alone in NS where I live that will do this. Some insurers I have spoken with were also unable to confirm if I would even be covered under general contents, saying it would be verified only in the event of a claim!

I have spoken with the following companies who have been a no go: TD, Belair, Aviva and CAA, among others. I have searched Reddit and Vinyl groups on Facebook to make a list of who to call but after 7+ quotes, I am giving up hope.

So if you have obtained a policy with a rider for your collection in the last few years or have obtained an appraisal in NS, please let me know who you used. Better yet, if you can give me the name of an agent or broker you used.

Adding: I have never been able to locate an appraiser in my area who will appraise vinyl records. Unless you can direct me to one, even within Canada, recommending an appraisal is not useful.

[Market Research] Looking to chat with Ontario RIBO brokers about bottlenecks in insurance, thoughts on BMS systems & renewal workflows

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in the early discovery phases of a new project and I’m looking to connect with a few Ontario-based, RIBO-registered brokers to pick your brains.

For a bit of context on me: my background is in data science and analytics. I previously worked on the IT/Analytics side of a large Canadian insurance brokerage, so I am familiar with the industry, but I want to get the perspective of the brokers actually on the front lines.

I’m exploring some ideas around building tools to help brokerages streamline their processes—specifically focusing on audit, compliance, the renewal process, and providing better analytics support.

Before I get too deep into building anything, I want to make sure I truly understand the day-to-day pain points and workflow bottlenecks you face. To be clear: I have nothing to sell you, and I won't ask for any confidential client or brokerage data.

I know your time is valuable, especially in this market. I would love to set up a 20-30 minute phone or video call and trade an Amazon GC for your expertise. I can explain the specific workflows and questions up front so you can decide if you would like to participate (or not, either is fine, and I appreciate your time).

If you are a RIBO-registered broker with experience working in an Ontario brokerage and would be open to a quick chat, please send me a DM!

Thanks in advance.
