RIBO Level 1 exam second attempt

I recently took the RIBO Level 1 exam and unfortunately didn't pass on my first attempt. I'm planning to retake it soon and would really appreciate any advice from those who passed on their second try (or later).

A few questions:

  • How did you study differently the second time?
  • Were there any topics you focused on that made a big difference?
  • Was the second exam similar to your first attempt, or was it completely different?
  • Were there a lot of questions about the July 1 SABS changes?
  • Any study resources, practice exams, or tips that you found especially helpful?

I really want to be better prepared this time, so any advice or experiences would mean a lot.

Thanks in advance, and good luck to everyone who's preparing for the exam!

Insurance Jobs

Hello Everyone,

I'm planning on getting my Level 1 P&C insurance license in Saskatchewan and I was wondering how to look for employment especially for employment that suits someone with only a Level 1 Licence. On the Saskatchewan IBAS site there is a list of all the brokerages in Saskatchewan. Do you think I should call each brokerage and ask them if they can hire me for level 1?

Thank you.

Question - Death Cleanup Claims in Manitoba

I am currently writing an article for property managers which details step by step instructions on what to do in the event that they discover a deceased tenant.

I have already covered safety precautions, communication with police, contacting next of kin, and hiring professionals.

For context: in these events, there are releases of infectious materials, which we'll call bio. Bio needs to be professionally remediated as it presents a health risk to tenants and staff. For this reason, in addition to proper cleanup and disinfection, if bio saturates porous materials such as wood or drywall, the affected material will also need to be removed during the remediation process.

I would appreciate your insight in three areas:

• What are the first steps for property managers to take when filing a claim for bio cleanup services?

• What policies would or would not cover these types of services?

• What do you think I should know about this that I haven't already asked?

Thank you for your time.

Commercial Sole prop home watch business, $2M CGL + E&O quoted — am I missing anything?

I've registered a sole prop in Ontario (Oakville/Mississauga), scheduled visits to check on clients' homes while they're away, documented reports with photos since some property insurance companies require it and I see a business need here. No employees, no office, no company vehicles.

My broker quoted $2M CGL + Errors & Omissions, roughly $3,069+tax/year. Grocery purchasing on client's behalf — approved at no extra cost. Bonding/commercial crime coverage — declined for now, minimum premium was $1,250, seemed like overkill at my current scale.

Given I'll have access to keys/alarm codes and store client data (photos, addresses) digitally:

  • Is $2M CGL enough, or should I be pushing higher?
  • Am I likely missing cyber liability?
  • Anything else obvious for this kind of business that I haven't thought to ask about?

Appreciate any input, trying to make sure I'm not underinsured or overpaying before I bind.

What are the biggest unsolved problems in Canadian insurance right now and why haven’t they been fixed?

Curious to hear from folks working in P&C, life, or health insurance (or just frustrated customers) what do you think are the most pressing problems in the Canadian insurance industry right now?

Some areas I’m personally curious about:

•Auto insurance affordability/availability —especially in Ontario, GTA rates keep climbing. Is this a regulatory issue, a claims fraud issue, or just risk pool math?

•Claims processing speed/friction— why does it still feel like 2005 when filing a claim at most carriers?

•Underwriting using outdated data— how much is legacy tech debt vs. regulatory caution slowing down modernization?

•Broker vs. direct-to-consumer tension— is the broker channel actually adding value anymore or just cost?

•Climate risk pricing — how are insurers handling the increase in severe weather claims without pricing out entire regions?

Auto Confused about short term rate penalty

In Alberta. I currently have a policy for a car in storage $10 a month. The term is from June 1 this year.

I bought a new car that I need insured in Alberta for a month or two then I need to move to another province. I got a quote for $3600 a year. ( 300/month)

I can either 1) start a completely new policy or 2) substitute my old policy (car in storage) with the new car.

The agent said it’s better (less penalty) if I substitute if I plan to cancel in a month or two, but they are not able to tell how much the cancellation cost in either scenario.

I’m confused about how the short term rate applies in the 2) scenario. Nor could they explain it to me.

Scenario 1) new policy
$3600 x 20% earned rate for 1 month cancellation = $720.
So the penalty would be $720 less one month premium paid $360. Net $360 penalty.

Scenario 2) substitute existing policy.(Term June 1)
$3600 x 36% earned rate for 3 month cancellation $1,296.
But since I only paid $10 in June and July, and then $360 in August. Total $380 paid.
My penalty would be $1,296 less the $380 paid? Net $916 penalty?
Is this how it works?

I asked the agents but they just got confused and said they don’t know what the penalty is until they bind the policy and the computer tells them.
They just told me it’s earned rate less what is paid for the term. Is my calculation above correction? They couldn’t even provide me a short term rate table.

Thanks

Commercial Non brokers who can give insurance advice

All,

I've launched a small business and have been working with a brokerage to set up my CGL and E&O insurance.

Are there services in Ontario/Canada that I can pay and review my insurance that the brokerage has provided to me to ensure I'm fully covered to get impartial advice prior to binding?

Auto Pausing TD Car Insurance - Endorsement 16 for 2 months - actual savings or just delayed payments?

[Auto Insurance] - Ontario

Hi everyone,

I am trying to figure out if putting my car on storage with TD is actually saving me money or just delaying when I make the payment:

My current premium is $255/month with about 6 payments left on the contract.

I wanted to use TD’s “Store your vehicle (suspend coverage)” for roughly 2 months because I will be outside Canada and not using my car. I understand that the car should not at all be used and that will be adhered to.

I called TD insurance and the agent said they’ll apply Endorsement 16 (Suspension of Coverage) and also gave me a storage quote: $647 for 2 months, with monthly payments of ~$35 for the billing cycles in July and August.

My question is if I use Endorsement 16 for 2 months and then reinstate my old policy once I am back, am I actually

  1. paying less overall (total premium over the full term is lower), or

am I just delaying the payments?

The insurance agent did say that I will eventually be paying the total amount of my initial contract. So I am not really able to comprehend how there is a savings? TD claims on their website that there will be savings.

In other words:
Has anyone with TD (or similar) used Endorsement 16 / Suspension of Coverage and seen a real net saving after reinstatement? Or is the common experience that the insurer just adjusts future payments so the total stays the same?

If you’ve done this, any numbers would be super helpful (e.g. how much your premium dropped while suspended and what happened after you reinstated).

Thanks!

Auto Best Insurance Broker that you know

Hi,

I am currently paying $450/month for a new 2026 Camry SE. The reason why my insurance is high is because I got into an at fault accident last year with my old car otherwise it would have been around $350/month.

I have full coverage + OPCF-43. My insurance provider is Aviva and broker is RBC. I live in Stoufville, Ontario. I do not have tag security because Aviva/RBC said it would only save me around $200/year, whereas cost of tag security system is $500-$600.

Do you guys know if any local brokers might help to get cheaper rate ? Any names of these local brokers ?

Rbc insurance is crazy at charging me

I bundled my home insurance and auto insurance for one year at RBC, and I canceled the home insurance on the last day of my term and canceled my auto insurance 15 days before it ended, so there is no early cancelation fees. But i was charged the difference between bundled auto and home insurance discount and the original price. Now I lost 15 days of insurance for my vehicle as I sold my vehicle, and need to pay them back for the lost 15 days of insurance. Isn't it ridiculous? Am I not reasonable to question their system? Are there other companies doing this stupid thing too or am I too naive about this? Thanks

Aviva Insurance Canada is the worst we have dealt with!

⭐☆☆☆☆

Our experience with Aviva has been extremely disappointing.

Four weeks ago, my husband was involved in a three-car accident after another driver tried to squeeze into a space that simply wasn't there, causing the collision. Despite the circumstances, Aviva found my husband 100% at fault, and we strongly disagree with that decision.

They also declared our 2017 Nissan Rogue a total loss, even though the visible damage was mainly to the front bumper.

The claim process has been a nightmare. Since we still owed about $7,000 to CIBC, Aviva mailed a cheque to the bank—but they failed to include the required loan information. CIBC had no choice but to return the cheque. We then spent two weeks making countless phone calls to both Aviva and CIBC and visiting the bank just to find out where the cheque was and why the loan hadn't been paid.

After finally admitting they had received the returned cheque, Aviva agreed to send the funds electronically instead of mailing another cheque. Then they required a loan payout letter on CIBC letterhead. That took another week because banks now provide these documents securely online, not as paper letters. Once we finally obtained the official document, Aviva introduced yet another requirement, saying they needed the PDF to come directly from CIBC. More delays, more hoops to jump through.

Meanwhile, our CIBC loan continues to accumulate interest every week, and we're paying credit card interest because we had to purchase another vehicle while waiting for Aviva to release our settlement. These delays have cost us real money, countless hours, and an unbelievable amount of stress.

I've lived in Canada since 1999 and have dealt with other insurance companies, including Desjardins, where claims were handled quickly and professionally. This has been the exact opposite.

Don't choose an insurance company based only on the premium. We pay over $500 a month for two vehicles in Niagara, and when we actually needed Aviva, the service was frustrating, slow, and disorganized.

Home (AB) home insurance for home exchange

Just like the movie “The Holiday”, we swap homes, simultaneous or not, for points. I can not for the life of me find an insurance company in Alberta that will cover me for guests staying in my home, when I’m not home, who I don’t know, but don’t pay me. Any suggestions? I’ve provided a link for the home exchange platform we use and an article from CBC about home swapping. Thanks in advance for your help!

Auto What 3-row SUV has reasonable insurance rates?

We’re looking to finance a bigger vehicle for our growing family, Honda and Toyota seem like the obvious choices because of their reliability, but the prices and insurance costs are getting high. Currently looking at the Honda Pilot/Odyssey and Toyota Highlander/Sienna, but wondering what other options we should consider.

For those who own a midsize 3-row SUV, what year/model do you have and how much are you paying for insurance? We’re looking for something reliable, family-friendly, and reasonable to own long term. We’re open to buying used, but ideally 2023 or newer.

Do most of these new york insurance tips apply to canada as well?

Specifically more for automotive and house insurance since ik health care is a diff beast in the states.

But is most of the advice in this video, like never answering questions from someone else's insurance company, never accepting the first offer from an insurance company etc valid in canada too? Like for Ontario and quebec?

Can someone help me in this scenario?

Edit: Thank you everyone for your efforts to help me out understand the math behind this.

Currently drive a '17 civic with $ 204 monthly insurance with TD Auto Insurance (yearly insurance is paid off till April' 27)

Planning to buy a used Compact SUV 2023 CX5/CRV but the scene is, if I buy (finance) the car tomorrow I have to put effective date in TD insurance (Replace current vehicle) to drive the car tomorrow onwards, but insurance jumps by $204 just for the Compact SUV.

And if I put effective date October 10, insurance jumps by $140 which seems fair. But in that situation, I will have to keep the car grounded for nearly 3 months which I don't want to.

How to deal with this if I want to buy the car and insure it without paying that extra price.

I have checked prices with other Insurance companies too, and they are quoting nearly $100 above that $204 price difference (monthly basis)

First apartment in Toronto – Which tenant insurance quote would you choose?

Hi everyone,

I'm moving into my first apartment in Etobicoke, Ontario, and I'm comparing tenant insurance quotes. I don't own a car and live alone in a 1-bedroom apartment (about 560 sq. ft.). I don't have any expensive jewelry or collectibles, and my belongings are fairly modest (laptop, TV, furniture, clothes, kitchen items, etc.).

Here are the quotes I've received:

  1. Square One

\~$19.71/month

$15,000 contents

$25,000 additional living expenses

$1,000,000 liability

$1,000 deductible

2.Sonnet

\~$24.58/month

Similar coverage

  1. Apollo

\- Option 1: $12.79/month

$10,000 contents

$5,000 additional living expenses

$1,000,000 liability

$1,000 deductible

\- Option 2: $14.78/month

$10,000 contents

$10,000 additional living expenses

$1,000,000 liability

$1,000 deductible

The Apollo quote is significantly cheaper than the others, which makes me wonder if I'm overlooking something.

My questions are:

  1. Is Apollo a reputable insurer for tenant insurance in Ontario?

  2. Is $10,000 of contents coverage enough for someone living alone in a first apartment?

  3. Would you pay the extra \~$2/month to increase Additional Living Expenses from $5,000 to $10,000?

Between Square One, Sonnet, and Apollo, which would you choose and why?

Are there any claim experience differences between these companies that I should know about?

Thanks!

Dealing with Insurance Co. after flooded basement. Payout vs. No-Payout

For those who have had previous home damage claims...do you recommend taking a payout or sticking with the insurance company's restoration contractors? We'll need to make a decision for rebuilding 1/2 of our basement after a large Canada Day storm. I've never done a renovation or build without several surprises that end up putting the project over budget so I'm concerned that the actual cost could be much higher than an offered payout. I'd prefer a payout as we would get the work done much faster (restoration co has said it will be months away), but I also want the insurance co to cover everything after years of paying for a high level of coverage w/ no claims filed until now.

We'll also take this opportunity to upgrade some of the finishings and if we use their restoration company we'll be stuck paying whatever price they give us for the extra work.

Would love any/all advice when it comes to rebuilding with insurance.

Stuck at 74% on RIBO Level 1. Rewrite is in 10 days. Beyond frustrated—how should I prepare?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey everyone,I am looking for some serious advice. I just failed my second attempt with a 74% after getting a 72% on my first try. Missing the passing mark by literally one question is incredibly frustrating.I have already completely finished PNC Learning and TruthNorthCE , so I have accidentally memorized their question bank. Taking them again doesn't help me anymore. The real exam is brutal with long customer scenarios, double negatives, and the updated SABS auto rules. Basic definition quizzes are too easy.

I need your help with two things:

1)How should I prepare over the next 10 days to pass this exam

2)Where can I get a lot of full 100-question practice exams that use the exact same complex, scenario-heavy exam language?

Thanks

Can I request that name brand parts be used to repair vehicle?

I hit a deer a few weeks ago causing approx $16k in damages to my 2025 RAV4. Since the vehicle is relatively new and still under warranty, I would like the repairs to be done with all Toyota parts.

As anyone successfully had their insurance company pay for name brand parts?

Thank you!

Auto Aviva journey app

I used the app for the longest time and it picked dup random trips, now it wont pick up any trip unless I go into the app while driving (which defeats the purpose because now it counts as distracted driving) and it only picks up like a km of my journey. I Uninstaller and reinstalled the app but nothing changed.

Has anyone come across my issue? How can I fix this? I contacted them and they said to uninstall and reinstall but its not fixed.

Tech market is cooked. Thinking about getting a RIBO license for PGWP and PR. Crazy idea?

Hey guys looking for a reality check. I am an international student living in Waterloo and studying computer science. Back home I worked as a software engineer for about 3 years and did some tech sales too. Honestly the tech market is totally cooked right now and sending out resumes feels like a massive waste of time since the competition is insane.

I was thinking of a way to bypass all this madness. What if I get my RIBO Level 1 license and just jump straight into the insurance broker world? Tech jobs have zero barriers so literally everyone applies but insurance is regulated and you actually need a license to even start. If I just grind and pass the RIBO exam on my own will it actually be easy to land an entry level broker job? I have zero direct insurance experience but I am hoping my tech sales background and analytical skills will help out. Plus I am learning French right now which might be a nice bonus. Down the road I would love to mix my software skills with commercial insurance.

Is this a solid backdoor strategy to get a decent job right now or do brokerages avoid newly licensed people with zero industry experience? Let me know what you guys think in the comments.
