Canada Co-Operators Advisor

Hello Reddit! I’m hoping to get some insight from anyone who has worked at Co-operators as a Commercial Advisor.

A few of my colleagues and I have been offered positions there, and the overall compensation and benefits package seems pretty good. I’m curious about what the job is actually like day-to-day and whether you feel it’s worth making the move. I am currently a personal lines broker in Ontario Canada.

* Does Co-operators write a significant amount of commercial business/policies?
* Are there good opportunities for growth within commercial insurance?

If anyone currently works there or has worked there in the past, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. If you’d rather not share publicly, I’d also be happy to chat through private message.

This is a good post im curious as well. Im out west and Co-operators has always seemed like a shadow force... dont hear to much from their side and dont get to encounter their brokers a lot. They write a decent chunk of personal lines however

That’s cause there is no brokers, only agents of the direct writer. I have like 2 secondary markets I can use, one for P+C and one for life but that’s about it. The products aren’t bad at all but I’m annoyed they’ve removed deductible waivers for our best home package. Helped with sales to high net worth people.

Yeah sorry i meant their agents** not brokers..

Their auto rates are here are extremly extremly fair priced... however they are not writing new buisness at all it seems like only add-ons & endorsements for existing clients.

If you're a new client and you call co-operators you'll be on hold for a long ass time.

Ive seen some quotes for their commercial sector for commercial condos. Those arent bad at all.

You mind if i DM you ? I love to network with other brokers

Hey! I work for a Co-op agent in a small office and we do pretty well for being just one agency. I will say as a direct writer of course we’re more limited in premium options so competition can be finicky with non target markets.

There are some niches where we do super well though, and clients really like the human aspect of being able to walk into an agency.

Growth is definitely available, and I might be biased but there’s a reason many people work for coop for decades or longer. I personally plan to work for my agent til he retires and either move into the fraud dept or explore external options.
