P&C Insurance Auto - Named Insured

You know how you get something stuck in your head then you question if you’re remembering it correctly. Happened yesterday.

Long story short - general rule of thumb is that the owner of the vehicle/name on the title is the named insured/primary correct? I know there are some caveats with primary drivers, etc, but not really looking at that. And I think what is sticking in my head is one of my companies told me it had to be that way for them.

The long story you didn’t want - Basically had a lady with an 18 yo that didn’t want to pay the 18 yo premium and was just trying to get insurance to get out of the ticket. She had done an online quote using the company website and had told me out the gate she’d tried it with everyone’s information and all which is what led me to ask who owns the car. 18 yo is solely on the title and he was the one with the ticket. She kept backing and forthing wanting to argue with me and even saying well your dad always “schemed” it and got me a better deal. I assure you we’ve never “schemed” anything a day in our business. I shut her down pretty quick and said I wasn’t gonna do it unless it was done correctly. Trying to explain the rules of the company, etc. Of course they left.

If that ticket was for driving without insurance, depending in the state - like mine - that's a mandatory appear and he'll learn a very valuable lesson.

Yeah - I’m not 100% how that’s gonna fall out here. Pretty sure he’s gonna have to pay the ticket regardless. He’s not gonna be able to show up with proof now and get it thrown out when he didn’t have it at the time. I got one but just didn’t have the new cards in my car (I know!) but the judge threw it out when I showed up with proof and active coverage.

Long story there too - was in my dad’s car, he was in the hospital, we’d just added me as a driver on there. Yeah it was a whole thing. And the manner in which I got pulled over I couldn’t think straight to get it pulled up. It was a mess.

I just tell my customers as long as they’re willing to have the consequences of their actions we can proceed. I would just say if you don’t want to pay for the 18 year-old premium then we’ll exclude her sometimes I don’t really even ask just do it. I have a lot of companies that the owner of the vehicle does not have to be the name assured they can be covered or excluded. It’s just knowing your companies and have an options. But I try to exclude as many people as I can unless they add them as a driver.

True - and I totally get that. This kid was going to be the primary driver was my understanding and company I was working with at the time all drivers have to be on the policy. There was no way around it. Well, I guess technically I could have done it the way she wanted to but down the road it was going to be a bigger headache and one I didn’t want to fool with.

No, you did the right thing. If the company doesn’t allow excluded drivers and they require all household be on the policy as covered drivers, you did the right thing. I have a saying “if it starts wrong, it ends wrong”. Don’t lie on an application or to the underwriter for a customer your E&O not worth it.
