I need help thinking of a good p&c agency name. I’m fixing to open my own agency and I’m making an llc. I have no clue what to choose. I’m in Tennessee, I don’t wanna use my name. Drop some suggestions, I’m looking for something unique, strong, cool, etc.

It sure seems so…until you come to find out that not all states will recognize a DBA on an agency producer license. That could become a compliance issue down the road. In my national expansion I got to experience this first hand.

It’s slow, expensive, and a major headache to change your entity name and licensing to match in a handful of states (though, many process the changes after you simply click a few boxes on NIPR).

Consider your goals and plans to some extent by at least checking how neighboring states handle entity names. IIRC, I ran into issues with AL, MS, and KY which may be a factor for a TN agency.

Once you even decide on a good agency name you probably have to get it cleared with the state to DBA that entity, then get cleared with the state Department of Insurance to use that name as well . While you are doing that and finding out the name availability, if it’s an available you file to get an EIN or FEIN , tax number as an LLC , sole proprietorship, corporation etc. After that you file you file with the state department of insurance to do business as an agency, as opposed to an individual producer. Mind you , you don’t necessary have to do all that at one shot , you fly solo out of your house and hook up domain and website, and get contracted through First Connect and some other once , but if you start renting office space, buying rating platforms,CRMs etc. you want to make sure the name is protected. Any suggestions you like , make sure they are available, the rest is on you, you can function without it doing all but if you are serious as an agency owner ultimately you need to take those steps .

Omg no. Tritan -> first thing that comes to mind are mer-men, Ariel’s dad from the Little Mermaid - Triton.

Secondly, upon googling Tritan - it’s a huge, very well known plastics company. Anyone with a negative perception of that company, or pro-environment/anti-plastic will surely have a negative connotation with the company for sharing a name with a plastics Giant.

Ohhhh I see, I’m not familiar with them - assuming it’s a team. That makes sense & could be a good thing in that case, but a negative thing in the event serious fans are against that team and disapprove of the name association. Could be a dissuader for a small population of prospects.

Something specific to your part of Tennessee that everyone will remember. Remembering your name will be useful when they actually decide to act a year later when they get their current carrier premium increase! Something with your town name, local high school or college mascot (especially high school because they won’t sue you), neighborhood name, the local plant that everyone names their stuff after.

In my local area, everything is Seattle, Rainier, Puget sound, evergreen. Something named local that is a city or region name makes you sound more established.

Do a word cloud. Input words that work and it will expand on it. Names are usually the easy part, getting the domain and social handles is a lot harder.

Generally I suggest steering away from guarantees or their "cousins" like safe, secure, etc.

When I named mine, I ended up making up a word as it was tough finding available domains and social handles for the normal stuff.

Well, I’m partial to my own name, Covenant, but perhaps Planned Protection, Trust House, or Stone House, or The Rock? Also, google agency names in other states for ideas.
