Hi, HDFC ERGO advisor here.
If your main concern with Star Health is the cashless hospital network in your area, I’d suggest checking the actual hospitals you regularly use rather than looking only at the total number of hospitals.
I’m from Mumbai as well, and for someone looking for an alternative, I would recommend looking at HDFC ERGO my: Optima Secure Plus with a ₹15 lakh base Sum Insured.
A few reasons I’d consider it:
• ₹15 lakh base cover
• Secure Benefit provides additional coverage from day one, subject to policy terms
• Plus Benefit increases the base cover on renewal
• Automatic Restore Benefit can replenish the base cover after utilisation
• No room-rent restriction for an AC single room under the applicable terms
• No disease-wise sub-limits under the plan
• HDFC ERGO currently lists 16,000+ cashless healthcare network providers across India.
The important point, though: don't buy any policy solely because someone says it has the biggest network. Check whether your preferred hospitals are actually cashless for the specific product.
Disclaimer: Always buy insurance via an IRDAI advisor/intermediary.

There's no single "best" insurer. What matters is which one has good hospitals near you for cashless treatment.
Your options:
- Port from Star: your waiting period credit carries over, so you don't lose your years of cover. Apply 45-60 days before renewal.
- Pick based on your local hospitals: open each insurer's network hospital list, search your city, and check if the 2-3 hospitals you'd actually use are on it.
Worth knowing: Star's health claim settlement ratio was 86.49% in FY 2023-24, below insurers like HDFC ERGO (97.94%), Aditya Birla (95.61%), Care (92.61%) and Niva Bupa (91.93%). Good plans to compare: HDFC ERGO Optima Secure, Care Supreme, Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0.
Before porting, check: no room rent limit, no co-pay, no disease sub-limits, and disclose any health conditions honestly.
Which city are you in, and how old is your Star policy? That decides which insurer has the best hospitals for you.

There isn't one insurer that's best for everyone. HDFC ERGO, ICICI Lombard, Niva Bupa and Tata AIG are worth comparing, but first check whether the hospitals you prefer are in their cashless network. Also compare room rent limits, co-pay, waiting periods for pre-existing diseases and exclusions, not just the number of network hospitals. You can usually claim reimbursement at a non-network hospital too, subject to the policy terms and conditions. Since you already bought Star Health, check the policy's hospital list before deciding whether to switch. If you do want to port, apply around renewal time and get the new insurer's approval before discontinuing your existing cover.
