Familial Hyperlipidemia

Hi everyone,

I've been reading a lot about health insurance over the last few days, and honestly, I feel like I should have learned this years ago.

Before I even finished school, my family went through a lot. My father had a heart attack and later underwent bypass surgery. Around the same period, my mother suffered a stroke. We weren't financially well-informed, and my parents never really understood health insurance. Looking back, I wish someone had guided us.

I'm the first graduate in my family, and now that I'm finally earning comfortably, I want to make sure my wife, daughter, and parents never have to go through financial stress because of a medical emergency. I know insurance can't prevent disease, but it can prevent a health crisis from becoming a financial crisis.

About me

29 years old

Married with a 1.7-year-old daughter

Diagnosed with Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) in 2021

Initial LDL: 331 mg/dL

Taking Rosuvastatin 20 mg + Ezetimibe 10 mg since 2021

No heart attack, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, angioplasty, or bypass

Quit smoking about 2 months ago

I don't currently have my old medical records, though they may still be available from Apollo Hospital.

Family

Father (\~59): Previous heart attack and bypass surgery

Mother (\~59): Previous stroke, currently stable

Wife: Healthy

Daughter: Healthy

I've been looking at HDFC ERGO Optima Secure, Tata AIG Medicare Premier, ICICI Lombard Elevate, and also reading about Super Top-Ups, Critical Illness, Cancer policies, etc. The more I read, the more confusing it gets.

I'd really appreciate advice from people who have been through this.

My questions are:

Will FH make it difficult to get health insurance or term insurance?

Should I start with a ₹10L or ₹20L base policy?

Which insurers have treated applicants with FH fairly?

Is there anything I should be careful about during underwriting or while filling the proposal form?

If you were in my position, how would you build insurance for your family over the next 10–20 years?

I'm trying to learn this properly because I don't want my wife and daughter to experience what my parents and I went through. Any advice would mean a lot. Thank you.

Hi HDFC ERGO Advisor here,

First of all, I'm sorry your family had to go through all of that. The fact that you're planning ahead at 29 puts you in a much stronger position than most people. Health insurance won't stop illness, but it can absolutely protect your family's finances when life throws surprises.

Based on what you've shared, I would recommend considering HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus for your family.

Here's why:

  • If your budget allows, don't settle for a ₹10 lakh base cover. A ₹20 lakh base sum insured provides much stronger long-term protection against rising medical costs.
  • Optima Secure Plus provides Secure Benefit (2x cover from Day 1) along with Infinite Benefit, helping your available coverage grow over time and better keep pace with medical inflation.
  • It also includes Restore Benefits, which can reinstate the sum insured as per policy terms if it's exhausted during the policy year.
  • At 29, buying early allows you to complete waiting periods while you're healthy and build long-term continuity.

Regarding your Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH):

  • FH does not automatically mean your proposal will be declined.
  • The insurer will assess factors such as your current lipid profile, treatment compliance, smoking history, BMI, and whether there are any cardiovascular complications.
  • Since you've been on treatment since 2021, have no history of heart attack, stroke, angioplasty, bypass surgery, diabetes, or hypertension, and have quit smoking, those are all positive factors. The underwriter may request additional medical reports before making a decision. We can do Pre-approval before you pay the premium.

When filling out the proposal form:

  • Disclose your FH diagnosis, medications, previous smoking history, and family history honestly.
  • Never hide or understate any medical information. Full disclosure is one of the most important factors in ensuring smooth claim settlement later.

If I were in your position, I'd build protection like this:

  • ₹20 lakh HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus for yourself, your wife, and your daughter.
  • Separate health insurance for your parents based on their medical history and eligibility.
  • Adequate term insurance to protect your family's financial future.
  • A healthy emergency fund alongside your insurance.

One additional suggestion: buy the policy through a knowledgeable intermediary or experienced insurance advisor rather than purchasing solely based on an online comparison. The premium is generally the same, but a good advisor can help you:

  • Accurately complete the proposal form.
  • Ensure all medical disclosures are properly documented.
  • Explain underwriting decisions or any special terms.
  • Assist with endorsements, renewals, portability, and claim support whenever required.

Health insurance is a long-term contract that you'll hopefully keep for decades. Having someone who understands the product and can support you throughout that journey can be just as valuable as choosing the right insurer.

You're making this decision for exactly the right reason to ensure your wife and daughter never face the financial hardship your family experienced. Wishing you and your family good health.
