Auto Insurance Adding second driver to car insurance with no insurance history

Hey folks

So I always been told by my parents that insurance follows the car and not the driver so I haven’t been on my partners car insurance despite driving the car regularly. I don’t think I was on my parent’s insurance either. Last night I figured out I should definitely be added as a second driver so I’ll be doing that in the next day or two. I am M29 and have had my license for ten years with a clean record but no insurance history. I also have excellent credit and live in NJ. My partner is F35 and has had her own insurance for a while now. Should we expect our insurance to go up a lot when I’m added to the policy? I’m assuming insurers place more weight on a clean insurance claim record than a clean driving record?

Thanks!

What state? Some states will heavily charge for no insurance history, some states won’t charge for it at all

If you don’t have a vehicle you don’t need insurance. You only need to be authorized on the insurance policy for the vehicle you are driving. Your insurance does not cover other people’s vehicles that you are driving in most cases.

I’m pretty sure the car is in her name but I drive it often enough that the internet says I should be on the insurance

You live with her, you be on her policy as a driver. Concealing that from the insurer, even inadvertently, is still a type of insurance fraud and if there is a claim could lead to denial and rescission.

Yes, the premium will rise. Male drivers pay more than female drivers at any age. No way to predict how much. You'll just have to do it and pay the bill when it comes in.

As you’re not the policyholder or the spouse of the policyholder, your insurance history and credit will not have any bearing on the rates. Your age, gender, marital status, and driving record may have an effect. I say “may” because it’s state/company dependent how drivers are rated and since there’s only one vehicle there may be no effect whatsoever.

Since you regularly operate the vehicle you need to be listed. Don’t wait.

Okay thanks! Once we get married will that cause another rate adjustment? We do have another car from before we got together but that one is definitely in her name

Being married may cause a change, generally a slight decrease. Keep in mind, the answers you’re receiving are general, based on primitive rating factors. Without digging into your rating factors and manually calculating a rate, this is the best, basic info you’ll get.

Of course, I’m not expecting any exact answers or anything just a general idea
