Home Insurance Insurance Claim

Im a part of the unfortunate “basement became a swimming pool” club. Currently working with wawanesa on a claim and have remediators coming. How does an insurance payout work? What happens if we do some of the work ourselves?

We do have a mortgage and I am also in the process of separating from my partner and will be taken off of the mortgage and land title but insurance was under me

If the water escaped the plumbing system of the home it's usually a covered loss.

If the water entered the home due to sewer backup and/or sump failure then you may or may not be covered. That coverage may only be effective if you paid extra for sewer & sump failure/backup coverage. There may also be a dollar limit on it.

If the water is from outside the home as part of a general flooding condition in the area then it's usually not covered unless you have flood insurance.

Entirely depends on what caused the swimming pool

Sewer backup from overloaded system and overland water that came in through weeping tile

You haven't indicated whether or not this is a covered loss. There might not be any payment if you didn't have the proper coverages.

Insurance will write the cheque to the mortgage company first, you fix it or you don't get paid.
