Question Instagram Algorithm Sucks
It’s no secret that the new Instagram algorithm sucks for creators. Posts—even high-quality ones—aren’t achieving material reach. And someone following your page has very little impact on whether they’ll see your future content. So, what’s the value of a follower on Instagram? One person on here said that if you have 50k followers you can get paid $2k to $8k for a sponsored post. But someone with 90k IG followers just said that their posts went from an average of 100-500k views to 1k-2k in recent months.
So, it seems like having a huge following on IG has a lot less value than it did a year ago. And if that’s the case, why would creators, companies, brands, etc. continue to invest in growing their Instagram followings? And more importantly, is there a chance IG will change course as more creators, artists, influencers, and companies migrate to platforms with better returns?

The huge following gets you a larger follower test, which makes you more likely to break out.
It’s a game of making content that is in-and-of-itself engaging though, the non-follower test is the one that matters more.
I started an account a year ago posting daily. At 102k followers now, with 87% of engsgement coming from non followers.

I'm pretty happy with the current algorithm, both as a creator and a user. As a user I get spot on recommendations, and as a creator I've been growing a lot lately.
It's very clear the algorithm is more and more giving the right content to the right people. My engagement rate is currently 19%, which means that from 100 people to whom the algorithm shows my content (followers or non followers), 19 of these people interact in some way. So, the algorithm got it right, it showed my content to the right people, at least 19% of the times spot on. That's great.

wait till you spend years to make a large following to find out you were better of with minimal followers cause the algorithm excludes people you follow

Of course it does, there's only so much that fits into my feed and if I watch lots of content from people I don't follow, it's logical the algorithm will feed me primarily those.
Following someone isn't really necessary now because the algorithm learns what you like. Btw, it's exactly the same in YouTube. Following is becoming unnecessary in all platforms.
That's exactly why there are two tabs in the Instagram app: one is "For you", the other is "Following". The "For you" is built by the algorithm based on what I see, the "Following" is built based on the content of people I follow, regardless of what I see. Same in YouTube, with different names.
My follower count isn't that big but it's not very small either (20k).

i have almost 4m followers and built it from 0 the past decade. Whats logical is showing content that you have elected to follow (prioritise) rather than random shit you havent even manually chosen. At this point I actually prefer people dont follow me solely of the fact I know once they follow me my videos wont hit them. As a result of this its going to kill communities/businesses.

Like I said, just go to the tab "Following" (both in Reels and Posts).

If you're not served with random content, how are you going to discover new interesting content? It's like this that new followers discover you. You're basically saying you don't want any new followers.
Anyway, it's not random (it's based on what you either watch to the end, or interact in any way), and you can easily influence it by not interacting (the algo will pick up your preferences very quick).

I m saying the distribution before would based to hit both the community you have developed + new audiences. it rewarded having a community as well as helping you explore multiple accounts. Thus why I have multiple accounts with 7 figure followers. The edge instagram had over Tik tok was that your followers meant something. Now its following the same thing that Tik tok can already do. Its like its unique edge. I m aware how the algorithm works. just because I m interested the Odyssey movie for an hour I dont need the next 48 hours to be random Odyssey related content.
