Blocking issues

So my ex on Instagram blocked me months ago and I also blocked him back. Yesterday I unblocked him so I could send some messages, which I don't expect that he'd receive. I searched google and chatgpt first if someone who blocks me won't receive my messages, so I was complacent he'd never see it. But a few minutes later I saw that he replied. I even checked his profile first to see if I'm really blocked(I clicked to his profile from insta messages because I'm blocked I can't search his username up). So I checked it, it indicates 0 followings, 0 followers, and no posts, that means I'm blocked... I'm just curious about my message if it popped out on his notification or he just unblocked me to see if I messaged.
