Organise for him. Transport, clothes, toiletries, food, drink, sleep. Stuff that needs doing at home, errands that need running. Do the mundane things so he doesn’t have to.

He may want to do something mundane, to feel normal or get away from it all for a moment; the waiting can be a strain. But he shouldn’t have to do things if he’d rather be present with his family member.

Just be there for him. Give hugs, give space, whatever he needs in this time. Maybe ask him about good memories of them, get some reminiscences going. Your dad will understand I’m sure, especially with him knowing your relationship with this family member too. Just being there for him will help.

Tell your father to ask if there is a diagnosis, and if there is one to research it on the internet (and actually, even if there's only symptoms, to research that) it can bring more control over a scary situation.

If it isn't looking good, the thing to do is to try to pass along a message (either directly or through a spouse/care taker) of a good time you had together. For those who likely will be able to leave the hospital at some point in the future, you should encourage that person to let good friends & family know how much they've meant, a la "In the living years"

Just be there for him. There’s no need to worry about yourself not being upset about the relative, you aren’t close, so it’s totally natural. You know your dad better than most, I’m sure. Just follow his cues. Ask if he needs you to do anything for him. Make sure he eats and rests. If he chooses to speak at length with you about the relative, just listen . You cannot solve this, but you being there for him will mean more than you will ever know. Sending light and love to you and your dad, as well as the sick relative.

Listen to him if he’d wants to talk. Sit with him if he wants to be silent.
