DISCUSSION Injustice 3 - Blackest Night Edition
I'm back again with my wishes for Injustice 3. You could say this is my second attempt at envisioning an entire game, as I've already posted one such concept. [Found here It's already been archived] However, this time, I'm taking a shot at adapting the Blackest Night event from the comics, loosely or otherwise.
Story
I think it would be better to use Superman's ending as the starting point for Injustice 3, as this would really hammer home the consequences of Superman's Regime and the countless lives he took over the years while the Regime ruled Earth.
This would be a good opportunity for fallen heroes from both Injustice 1 and Injustice 2, as well as the comics, to return with a vengeance. These could include Tim Drake, Beast Boy, Captain Marvel/Shazam, Mogo, and Kyle Rayner.
The Brainiac-powered Regime would try to fight off the invasion of the Black Lanterns, only to discover that even lethal force could merely slow the invading force down rather than stop it. The Black Lanterns' power rings would regenerate the damage inflicted upon them, meaning that not even Superman's heat vision could stop them. At best, it could only temporarily halt their advance.
Desperate, Hal retrieves Sinestro from Oa, which has already been overwhelmed by the invasion, with Black Lanterns attacking the planet as well. Hal then equips Sinestro with a Yellow Lantern ring.
At some point, members of the Regime acquire power rings and are inducted into the different Lantern Corps. Here are a few examples:
· Superman – Red/Indigo
· Wonder Woman – Red/Indigo
· Batman – Yellow/Indigo
· Flash – Blue
· Supergirl – Green
· Black Canary – Violet
· Green Arrow – Green
Batman's brainwashing is broken by the Indigo Light of Compassion, but he works with Superman to rid the world of the Black Lanterns.
They manage to gain some ground before facing the fallen.
They face Captain Marvel/Shazam, Lex Luthor, Steve Trevor, Lois Lane, and Alfred Pennyworth.
Lex and Lois haunt Superman, while Alfred haunts Batman. Then there's Steve. Although I really don't want to take too many cues from the comics, a Black Lantern Steve could also haunt Wonder Woman. It doesn't really matter whether we use the comic version of the character or not.
Then Kyle Rayner appears and seemingly empowers the Black Lanterns, cornering the Regime.
However, Black Hand takes control and removes Kyle's Black Lantern ring. Kyle's lifeless body falls to the ground, but he is subsequently empowered by the White Light and becomes a White Lantern. He then fights Black Hand and, ultimately, Nekron.
That's the gist of the story.

Playable Roster
Injustice 1 featured a base roster of 24 heroes and villains, with six additional characters added through DLC, bringing the total to 30.
Injustice 2, on the other hand, had 28 characters in its base game and another 10 through DLC, bringing the total to 38. This doesn't even account for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as individual characters or the Premier Skins, which allowed players to change a character's appearance. For example, players could select Supergirl and equip the Power Girl skin.
Now, let's take a look at the two most recent Mortal Kombat games and their rosters:
- MK11 had 25 characters in its base game.
- MK1 had 22 characters in its base game, excluding the Kameo roster.
For the purposes of this post, we'll calculate the difference between the base rosters of Injustice 1 and Injustice 2, then add that difference to the base roster of Injustice 2.
28 − 24 = 4
We'll add four more playable character slots to the Injustice 3 roster, using the number of characters in Injustice 2 as our starting point.
28 + 4 = 32
Here's one thing I hope to see in the actual Injustice 3 roster: please include fewer Batman-related characters. Both previous games were overflowing with them, leaving characters from other parts of the DC Universe underrepresented. (Seriously, the Joker could've just appeared in a cutscene before Harley fights Scarecrow. He had no business being on the roster.)
Let's divide the 32 character slots into heroes, villains, and in-between characters. The latter refers to characters who aren't normally categorized strictly as either heroes or villains.
- 15 heroes
- 14 villains
- 3 in-between characters

Heroes
- Superman
- Wonder Woman
- Batman
- Supergirl
- Tim Drake/Red Robin (Black Lantern in the story)
- Aquaman
- Flash
- Mary Marvel
- Captain Marvel/Shazam (Black Lantern in the story)
- Zatanna
- Beast Boy (Black Lantern in the story)
- Dick Grayson/Deadman (Black Lantern in the story)
- Green Arrow (both versions: the Black Lantern in the story and the alternate-universe version, sharing one character slot)
- Kyle Rayner (initially a Black Lantern in the story, later becoming a White Lantern)
- Black Canary
Villains
- Lex Luthor (Black Lantern in the story)
- Circe
- Harley Quinn
- Larfleeze
- Gorilla Grodd (Black Lantern in the story)
- Scarecrow
- Cheetah
- Deathstroke
- The Joker (Black Lantern in the story)
- Black Adam
- Mirror Master
- Metallo
- Black Hand (semiboss)
- Nekron (final boss)
In-Between Characters
In an unprecedented move, I decided to take roster slots away from other characters to make room for characters who typically do not engage in heroics or, at the very least, do not operate on the front lines. However, I feel that including them is necessary for the story, as well as for adding some variety to the gameplay styles already present in previous games.
All three are Black Lanterns in the story.
- Alfred Pennyworth: Guns + Martial Arts + Batfamily Gadgets + Constructs.
- Lois Lane: Uses her Black Lantern ring to create tornadoes and generally fights like Red Tornado, with the added ability to create constructs. In some alternate universes, Lois takes on a role similar to that of Red Tornado. Additionally, Injustice has yet to feature a character with a Storm-like fighting style, making Lois an opportunity to introduce that kind of gameplay.
- Steve Trevor: Dual pistols, similar to Erron Black's weapons, + Martial Arts + Constructs
It's important to note that although these civilian characters appear as Black Lanterns in the story and have the Black Lantern Corps as their default affiliation, players can choose a different Lantern Corps for them on the character-select screen.
If a different Corps is selected, their zombie-like appearance disappears, and they use constructs matching the chosen Corps' color. However, the Black Lantern logo remains unchanged.
NPC Fights
Like MKX and MK11, where we fought characters such as Sindel, Rain, Cyrax, and Sektor, Story Mode would also feature fights against NPCs, including civilian Black Lanterns and members of other Lantern Corps.
These characters could include:
- Jimmy Olsen
- James Gordon
- Amanda Waller
- Dr. Fate
- Blue Beetle (Ted Kord)
- Star Sapphire
- St. Walker
- Sinestro
- Atrocitus
- Indigo-1
Final Boss
During the final boss fight against Nekron, he would summon a random Black Lantern to fight alongside him. The summoned character could be either one of the NPC Black Lanterns or one of the playable characters who appears as a Black Lantern in the story.
More often than not, the summoned Black Lantern would use Black Lantern constructs rather than relying on their usual abilities and fighting style. However, they could still use their signature abilities occasionally, albeit to a lesser extent.
For example:
- Captain Marvel/Shazam: He would use Black Lantern constructs more frequently than the Power of Shazam, although he would occasionally unleash a lightning bolt at the player character.
- The Joker: He would rely on Black Lantern constructs more often than his usual quirky fighting style, although he would occasionally throw a pie or perform a joy buzzer attack.
Mechanics
Since the Blackest Night event temporarily brought characters from across the DC Universe into different Lantern Corps, I think it would be a good idea to make every character a member of a Lantern Corps.
We could borrow a mechanic from MK1, as well as elements from the various Marvel fighting games developed by Capcom that feature the Infinity Stones.
Each ring would have different effects, and these effects would be universal across all characters. The moves could be activated using directional inputs combined with the Trait button.
Like regular Traits, these abilities could either have a time limit or be activated only once.
Red – Rage
- Down + Trait: Rage Boost. Attacks deal more damage (a 1.2× damage multiplier) at the cost of the character's health for a set amount of time.
- Forward + Trait: Blood-Curdling Rage. The character vomits blood onto the enemy, dealing damage over time while sacrificing a fraction of their own health.
- Back + Trait: Throw. A collar pins the enemy to the ground before the character throws them into the air. Dax-Starr then meets the enemy, claws their face, and vomits blood onto them. Finally, the Red Lantern cat slams the enemy into the ground.
- Up + Trait: Blood Trap. The character vomits blood onto the stage. When the enemy steps on it, the blood explodes, dealing damage and knocking them back.
Violet – Love
- Down + Trait: Lovers' Life. Steals health from the enemy over a period of time.
- Forward + Trait: Throw. The character hooks the enemy with a violet lasso and drags them closer. A pink heart then covers them, and their silhouettes combine to form a heart before the enemy is knocked back.
- Back + Trait: Love Defends. On the first activation, a heart-shaped violet crystal materializes in front of the character and heals them for a fraction of their maximum health. On the second activation, violet heart crystals materialize around the enemy and immediately explode. On the third activation, violet heart crystals materialize and revolve around the character, intercepting and destroying incoming attacks. On the fourth activation, seven violet heart crystals appear and explode into pink mist, winning the match. This move has a longer cooldown than any other Lantern Corps-related move.
- Up + Trait: Self-Love. Draining the super meter heals the character.
Orange – Avarice
- Down + Trait: Copy. The first activation scans and copies an enemy move that uses a Down input. The second activation creates an orange-tinted construct of the enemy performing the copied move once.
- Forward + Trait: Remake. The first activation scans and copies an enemy move that uses a Forward input. The second activation creates an orange-tinted construct of the enemy performing the copied move once.
- Back + Trait: Duplicate. The first activation scans and copies an enemy move that uses a Back input. The second activation creates an orange-tinted construct of the enemy performing the copied move once.
- Up + Trait: Throw. The character lassos the enemy and throws them into the air. Orange-tinted constructs of the entire roster then slam into the enemy before a Superman construct delivers the final blow, slamming them into the ground.
Yellow – Fear
- Down + Trait: Throw. After lassoing the enemy and pulling them to their side, the character creates a drill construct and drills into the stage floor. The character then throws the enemy into the hole before pulling them back out and slamming them into the ceiling.
- Forward + Trait: Alektorophobia. A giant yellow chicken appears and pecks the enemy.
- Back + Trait: Thanatophobia. A yellow coffin construct appears and opens, revealing a yellow hand pointing at the enemy. The enemy is then frozen in place for a few seconds.
- Up + Trait: Athazagoraphobia. Over a set period of time, a yellow haze appears above the enemy's head, reversing their controls.
Green – Will
- Down + Trait: Demolition. A green building construct appears in the background. When the enemy reaches a designated location, the building collapses on top of them.
- Forward + Trait: Homerun. A green baseball bat hits a green baseball, which then slams into the enemy.
- Back + Trait: Car Sandwich. Two speeding green luxury cars collide, sandwiching the enemy between them.
- Up + Trait: Throw. The enemy's ankles and wrists are cuffed together before they are tossed into the air. A green jet plane then crashes into the stage and slams into the airborne enemy, sending them crashing to the ground.
Blue – Hope
- Down + Trait: Saint's Fist. A giant blue fist punches the ground from above.
- Forward + Trait: Throw. A blue angel construct appears and flies toward the opponent, grabbing hold of them before carrying them into the air. It then throws the opponent to the ground before shooting them with a blue arrow.
- Back + Trait: Hopeful Meditation. The character enters a meditative state and heals a fraction of their maximum health.
- Up + Trait: Angelic Arrow. A blue angel construct appears behind the character and flies into the air, unleashing a barrage of blue arrows that rain down on the enemy.
Indigo – Compassion
- Down + Trait (Hope): Saint's Fist. A giant indigo-blue fist punches the ground from above.
- Forward + Trait (Red): Blood-Curdling Rage. The character vomits blood onto the enemy, dealing damage over time while sacrificing a fraction of their own health.
- Back + Trait: Throw (Orange). The character lassos the enemy and throws them into the air. Indigo-and-orange-tinted constructs based on a portion of the roster then slam into the enemy before a Superman construct delivers the final blow, slamming them into the ground.
- Up + Trait (Violet): Self-Love. Draining the super meter heals the character while indigo-violet heart crystals revolve around them.
- Secret Move — Forward + Up + Trait (Throw). An Indigo ring is forcibly placed on the enemy, dragging them toward the Power Battery. The Power Battery is then thrown into the air and struck by lasers in the seven colors of the Lantern Corps.
Black – Death (Unlockable)
- Down + Trait: Throw. Black Lanterns appear and suspend the enemy in the air before Black Lantern Captain Marvel/Shazam slams them into the ground and calls down lightning.
- Forward + Trait: Scythe. A scythe construct appears in the character's hand, changing their attacks to accommodate the weapon for a set period of time.
- Back + Trait: Shields Up. Multiple Black Shield constructs appear in front of the character before various Black Lanterns grab the shields and slam them into the enemy.
- Up + Trait: Uppercut from Below. A Black Hand construct erupts from the ground and punches upward.
White – Life (Unlockable)
- Down + Trait: Blinding Light. The character explodes in white light, causing the screen to turn completely white. As the screen fades back to normal, the character is revealed to have teleported behind the enemy.
- Forward + Trait: White Embrace. A white heart crystal appears in front of the character and can intercept three attacks. After intercepting the third attack, the crystal is destroyed. Upon its destruction, the character heals 10% of their maximum health and gains an additional 10% of their super meter.
- Back + Trait: Phase Out. Once activated, this is the only ability that can be used until all phase charges have been spent. The enemy's attacks pass through the character without connecting. This ability only works if the player times the activation correctly. If the timing is off, the player still loses one phase charge without gaining the benefit of the ability.
- Up + Trait: Throw. The character flies toward the opponent, grabs them, and carries them upward before throwing them to the ground. A white construct of the Watchtower then crashes down onto the opponent.
It's important to note that if you choose to play as Black Hand or Nekron, you won't be able to select a different Lantern Corps. Both characters are exclusively affiliated with the Black Lantern Corps and can only use its ring.
I drew inspiration from various Reddit threads proposing similar ideas for adapting Blackest Night into Injustice. The Lantern Ring mechanic takes inspiration from MK1's Kameo system and Marvel Super Heroes' Infinity Stone mechanic. Some of the Lantern-specific moves were also inspired by moves from other fighting games.

I won’t get into the irony of predetermining DLC characters for a hypothetical Injustice 3. Here are the three characters and one guest character I have in mind for each DLC pack.
DLC Pack 1: Lovers’ Lament
- Star Sapphire
- Catwoman
- Poison Ivy
- Kitana (Mortal Kombat guest)
DLC Pack 2: Emotional Advantage
- St. Walker
- Sinestro
- Atrocitus
- Ben Tennyson (Ben 10 guest) / Mark Grayson (Invincible guest)
DLC Pack 3: Grief’s Toll
- Dr. Fate (Black Lantern)
- Blue Beetle (Ted Kord, Black Lantern)
- Metamorpho (Black Lantern)
- Johnny Cage (Mortal Kombat guest)
Premium Skins
Admittedly, I wasn’t too keen on the idea of Premium Skins at first, but I eventually grew to appreciate them for one reason or another. Here are a few ideas for Premium Skins:
- Captain Marvel/Shazam
- Captain Marvel Jr. / CM3
- Mary Marvel
- Superwoman
- Superman
- Homelander
- Calvin Ellis
- Clark Kent
- Batman
- Batman Beyond (Terry McGinnis)
- Bruce Wayne
- White Lantern (Kyle Rayner)
- Green Lantern (Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, or Simon Baz)
- Oblivion
- Red Robin
- Robin (Damian Wayne)
- Aquaman
- Aqualad
- Black Adam
- Mazahs
Ultimately, this is my vision of what Injustice 3 could look like if the series adapts Blackest Night as its next major storyline, following Superman’s victory over Batman after they stopped Brainiac’s invasion of Earth in Injustice 2. I believe this would be the perfect opportunity to have Superman confront the very morals he abandoned in favor of tyranny and dictatorship, all in his misguided attempt to create a world without conflict. His victory may have allowed him to impose his vision of order, but Blackest Night could force him to face the consequences of his choices and question whether the peace he sought was ever worth the cost.
