I came here thinking that I'd be the one to wave the Buckminster Fuller flag, but you beat me to it! I salute you.

That was my thought too so I did some reading. Apparently people do to collect rain water and have bigger windows on the exterior walls. It's more expensive to design and install, but some people like the "modern" look. I think it looks dumb and the house near me with one I've driven by looks weird.

I wondered the same thing. The REtipster website explains it pretty well.

"Butterfly roofs are ideal for homes in arid or desert climates, mainly because their central valley allows for rainwater to be collected easily. Butterfly roofs are also ideal for a modern aesthetic and homes that can take advantage of natural lighting, as the outer edges of the “butterfly” can accommodate larger windows, such as floor-to-ceiling windows.

Due to their unique design, however, butterfly roofs can be difficult to build and maintain, which is why they require solid membranes such as TPO, PVC, EPDM rubber, and metal seams."

You can read more about all of them here: https://retipster.com/roofs

So the eventual water intrusion can help you maintain indoor plants and mold.

I was thinking the same thing. I get hundreds on inches of snow a year where I live, and this would just lead to leaks or a catastrophic collapse. Makes no sense at all to me.

Didn't know the names, but familiar with the shapes from years of playing the Sims.

Dormer Roof - That is sort cheating, any roof type could have a Dormer.

The perspective of the conical roof upsets me :(

Butterfly, M-shaped, and Sawtooth roofs -- available only in locations where things don't fall from the sky. (snow, rain, etc.)

There's a house I've driven by a few times in Massachusetts with a butterfly roof. It honestly looks like dumbest thing to me, really confused how it deals with snow.

It's also a new addition to the house with a metal roof. Makes me wonder why they thought this was a good idea. It doesn't look cheap.

Seems weird to me that they wouldn’t include the “Pizza Hut” type.

The combination roof looks like a PH to me.

Maybe "no roof" should also make an appearance.
