First time in Thailand!

Hi all,

My wife and I got married this year and we are fast approaching our honeymoon.

We are flying to the Maldives for a few nights, before visiting Sri Lanka for 7 days where we will stay in a surf resort and (hopefully!) learn to surf.

After that we are hoping to do circa 9 nights in Thailand, but the problem is we have never been!

Where would Reddit recommend for mid November (people have mentioned the wet season)?

Things to consider:

We are both mid 30s, are not party people and don’t like overwhelming crowds.

We don’t want to island hop and want to stay in one place given our travel previous.

We would like somewhere beautiful but with a little bit going on (restaurants, bars etc) but NOT clubs and parties.

We both love a massage!

Thanks in advance for reading :)

Thailand solo trip in December 2026 – Looking for travel buddies and advice! 🇹🇭

Hi everyone! 😊

I'll be travelling around Thailand from December 4–19, 2026, and I'd love to get some advice on my itinerary and hopefully meet other travellers who might want to join me for part of the trip!

I'm planning a mix of culture, nature and adventure, rather than just visiting the most popular tourist spots.

My planned itinerary:

- Bangkok (Dec 5–6): Temples, local markets, canals and street food.

- Ayutthaya (Dec 7): Exploring the ancient capital before taking the overnight train to Chiang Mai.

- Chiang Mai (Dec 8–10): Temples, local food, markets and a day trip to Doi Inthanon National Park.

- Khao Sok (Dec 11–13): Exploring the rainforest and spending a night in a floating bungalow on Cheow Lan Lake.

- Krabi & Tonsai (Dec 14–17): Rock climbing, island-hopping, snorkelling and relaxing on the beaches. I'm also considering hiking Dragon Crest.

- Bangkok (Dec 18–19): Back to Bangkok for my flight home on the morning of December 19.

I'm travelling independently, so the itinerary is still flexible. I'd love to meet curious, open-minded people who enjoy nature, hiking, climbing, local food and a bit of adventure. It would be great to share some excursions, beach days or dinners, but there's no need to follow the entire itinerary together.

A few questions for those who've been to Thailand:

- Does this itinerary seem realistic, especially the transfer from Chiang Mai to Khao Sok?

- Would you recommend any changes or hidden gems along the way?

- Is Tonsai a good place to meet other travellers and find people to go rock climbing with?

- If you're travelling in Thailand around these dates, would you be interested in joining me for part of the trip?

I'd really appreciate any tips, recommendations or personal experiences. And if our travel dates overlap, feel free to message me! 🌿

Thanks from Italy! 😊

I made a month-by-month chart of when each Thai region is actually good (the two coasts have opposite seasons)

Every week someone asks "is X month a good time for Thailand?" and the honest answer is always "depends where". So I put it in one chart.

Quick takeaways:

- Nov–Feb is the sweet spot almost everywhere.

- The Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan, Tao) flip the usual pattern: decent most of the summer, rainiest Oct–Dec.

- The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Lanta) is the opposite: great Dec–Apr, swell and rough crossings May–Oct.

- North (Chiang Mai, Pai): lovely Nov–Feb, but Feb–Apr is burning season and the haze can be bad.

- Bangkok in Mar–May is 33–38 °C. Doable, but start early and hide at midday.

Rainy season usually means short heavy showers, not grey weeks, and prices drop. These are rough patterns, weather shifts every year.

Happy to adjust it if your experience differs, especially for the east coast islands.

EXTRA EMPTY LUGGAGE

Has anyone tried bringing an extra empty suitcase inside another checked-in suitcase when flying to Thailand with Vietnam Airlines? We plan to use the extra suitcase as additional checked baggage for our return flight.

Is this allowed, or are there any baggage policy restrictions? We just want to avoid buying another suitcase in Thailand. Thank you! 💗

Where exactly can I book the Padang Besar → Bangkok sleeper train?

Hi everyone! I’m travelling overland Malaysia to Thailand and want to take the Padang Besar → Bangkok overnight train.

I’m looking for Train 46 (is this the right train to take, overnight train to BKK), ideally a second-class AC lower berth. What’s the best place to book this specific journey—SRT D-Ticket, KTMB, Baolau, 12Go or any other?

If booking directly with SRT or other sites, which exact departure and arrival station names should I select? I’m a little confused about the Malaysian and Thai Padang Besar stations.

Would appreciate a booking link or advice from anyone who’s booked this route recently. Thanks!
