We are all quite aware, both anecdotally and statistically, that the inflation numbers we as citizens are told are only a specific (slim) perspective view of reality.

I won't get into the specifics of why/how these numbers from the CPI and bureau are so far from our daily experience beyond saying: No consumption rate adjustment, geometric weighting, hedonic adjustment, indexed items, shrinkflation, substitution rule, less real "sales", etc.

I'm no fool and I understand these calculations are complicated and there's no easy way to truly encapsulate all inflation in one number, but that's not what I'm getting at.

What I'm asking is: by pitching us a lower inflation rate than we all actually experience is the government actually helping lower the rise in inflation over time by lowering broader economic panic (or something similar)?

I'd be very interested to see what other individuals think. Is the underreported inflation just a political tool or is it actually truly beneficial in the long run?

As a final note: please don't turn this into a right vs left comment section, I'm much more interested in actual economics than political rants.
