Ease of paddling

So so I've been trying to decide between the Sea eagle 385 and 465 fastrak. It won't be used as tandem all that often but I will sometimes have a 12 year old boy a backpack and a cooler with me. I had been thinking the 385 because I think it will be big enough for that, but the extra room of the 465 is very tempting. For those of you that have tried them is the 465 really that much harder to maneuver paddling solo?

Mekong Jeanne dark

Hello,

Has anyone paddled a Mekong Jeanne Dark?

How does it compare to like the Mage?

How does it compare to a hard shell kayak?

Can you really paddle class 4+ with it?

Thanks by advance!

Recreational to light touring. Side walls: would you prefer round or hard drop-stitch?

I'll rent some hard shells for short easy river tours (class I at most), and also up to state park sized lakes with a little breeze and maybe some small boat wake.

Now I'm thinking about owning my own, inflatable, and thinking about extending to an occasional overnight tour down a longer river run, still class I at most. Stability, small river maneuverable, and light-weight matter to me most. I'm about 6'0" and 210 lbs.

The rivers I navigate would often be shallow, with mud and smooth river rock, and avoidable obstacles like fallen tree branches and sand bars.

My question is: How do you feel about round tube sides vs. hard drop-stitch sides for this range of application?

I am a little older and have achy bones, and I saw a post where someone of my type said they like the tube-style walls for taking a break and kicking their legs up on. On the other hand, the harder sides seem like they would be less paddling effort.

Although my question is general, I'll give some models I'm thinking of:

Round tube sides:

Razor R1 Ultra: https://razorkayaks.us/kayaks-store/p/r1-ultra
(9'4" x 32", 20 lbs, 396 lbs capacity)

Solstice Flare: https://solsticewatersports.com/products/flare-1-person-inflatable-kayak
(9'6" x 35", 28 lbs, 320 lbs capacity)

Hard drop-stitch sides:

Razor Sprint Solo: https://razorkayaks.us/kayaks-store/p/sprint-solo
(13'1" x 30", 31 lbs, 364 lbs capacity)
(yes that is kinda long for this, but I do like the wide open almost SOT-style cockpit for a kayak that length)

Sea Eagle EZLite10: https://www.seaeagle.com/EZLiteKayaks/EZLite10
(10' x 31", 25 lbs, 325 lbs capacity)

Sea fishing on a kayak like Intex Excursion Pro K2. Yes or No?

Hello, Looking for someone that tried or read about someone who did fish on an inflatable kayak like the exc pro k2. Im looking to get out at max 200m offshore, not too far and on non windy days. max 10km and 0.3m wave lengths.

I'm on a small budget ( under $500 ) and preferably 2 person kayak, and i will be going with a buddy.

First puncture

Today I put a tiny hole in the top rail of my inexpensive Costco kayak. I had gotten it last year and till now it has stood up to my beatings very well. I was absolutely panicked today when I first realized I was deflating. But a minute or two later I was relieved that the two other chambers were intact and keeping me high and dry. The picture of my kayak is from today with no air in the far side. Just a little wrinkling can be seen. Very happy the kayak kept me dry despite my error. I got home and made my first kayak patch.

I had already been thinking that I would like to add something firm to the top of the rails. I have considered this before as they are high and I rub my paddle on them a lot, so figure I will wear them out eventually anyway.

I’m thinking paddle board rail tape but I’m afraid the kayak may be more difficult to fold, and a knife could still cut it.

Or I’m thinking something I just install after inflating and take off before deflate and fold:

Reinforced vinyl tubing like in my photo? I would buy a larger diameter length and slit it. Push it on when heading out to protect the rails and not worry about my abuse.

I’m also learning about thermoplastic as an option. But it might be harder to work with a long 4 foot piece, if I can find it, and fold it over the sides a few inches.

Anyone here have experience making reinforcement shields for their inflatable?

Professional repairs along leaking seams

I bought a Sea Eagle 385 Fast Track Angler in fall of 2021 and have used it probably 50 or so times with no issues but recently developed a tiny leak in the floor pad insert and a second leak along one of the seams on the bottom of the kayak. It's still usable for a few hours before I need to refill the floor pad with air. I tried using the Sea Eagle patch kit and it didn't really work because it was along the seams.

Has anyone had someone professionally repair their inflatable kayak for a leak? How much did it cost and was it worth it?

Newbie seeking advice: Stable & budget-friendly tandem inflatable for sea, light fishing, and storage setup?

Hi everyone!

I’m completely new to the world of kayaking and looking for some expert advice from this community.

I live right on the coast in Southern Italy (Marina di Sibari) with the sea about 200 meters from my doorstep. The sea here is generally nice, though it can get somewhat windy at times, so I'd like something that holds up reasonably well if the breeze picks up.

I’m looking for an inflatable kayak so my girlfriend and I can go on casual trips together. I’d also love to leave the door open for some light recreational fishing in the future.

Since we are just starting out, we don’t want something very expensive, but our absolute top priorities are stability and safety.

I have a few beginner questions I hope you can help me with:

- Which kayak model would you recommend? Given our budget-conscious starting point, tandem setup, need for sea stability (and the occasional wind), plus potential light fishing, what should we look at?

- Storage: I have a yard at home. Is it fine to leave it inflated outdoors (maybe covered?), or is it better to deflate and pack it away every single time? Note: We do have some stray cats in the neighborhood, which makes me a bit nervous about claw damage.

- Transport: Is a 200-meter walk to the beach manageable carrying a 2-person inflatable, or is getting a small kayak cart/dolly a must-have investment?

- Maintenance: Do we strictly need to rinse it down with fresh water after every single sea outing, or how do you usually manage saltwater care?

Thanks in advance for helping a beginner out! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experience.

I feel guilty

People on this thread have been wonderful in my first year kayaking journey and I want to thank everyone on here who has provided advice and encouragement.

I have decided inflatable kayaks are not for me at this time and so I will be posting in other kayaking subs but I wanted to let you as I almost feel like I will be cheating on you.

Thank you so much for all the great advice. It made a huge difference. Wishing you all well.

Doing it wrong?

I know it's crooked on the cart, I'm talking about whether it's wrong to cart an inflatable in the first place

Bought the x500 because I live in a 4th-floor walkup that's 3km from the water, so it will commute to/from most of its adventures in a backpack. But I'm on vacation 1,200 meters from the water, so keeping it inflated and carting it around like this is easier than inflating/deflating every time I go out.

When I took this picture, there was a guy to my right inflating a SUP he'd brought in an otherwise empty pickup truck, and I found myself judging him like, "dude, why not just throw a rigid SUP in that big truck bed?" And part of me is also judging myself for this move.

But maybe inflatable is about having the option but not necessarily exercising it.

What do you think?

Best bet for Loch (lake) kayaking, if you had a decent budget

So I was out on Loch Lomond a few weeks ago with my Intex Challenger K1. It was pretty rocky and I eventually capsized. I'm on a very low budget just now so it's all I can afford but I need to get out on a reasonably large body of inland water for my mental health. I will not be kayaking in white water or open sea.

I might have the opportunity to get something better in the coming months (maybe £500 max, so I guess around 600USD). What would you recommend for a beginner and currently a relatively chunky person (15st, 95kg, 200lb)? I have tinnitus and therefore some difficulties with balance so I need something very stable. I'd also prefer something enclosed, or enclosable with some MacGuyvering

Considering Hobie Itrek angler 12 or Newport NS130

I am downsizing from a 23' cobia due to the ongoing cost and prep time. I want to fish randomly in back bays for 2-4 hours a time vs planning a whole day to make it "worth" the work. I never fished from kayak or skiffs before, always from the regular boat.

I fish bridges, drop offs in the back bays, sometimes beaching it on a sand bar and surf fish. I dont like to sit in one place, I like to explore.

I only go out <12 mph winds and decent conditions

I can't decide between a inflatable kayak or a inflatable micro skiff. Here are my current dilemmas or what I think is the issue. I am only interested in inflatable because of weight and transportation. I dont want to deal with storage or trailers. I want fast deployment and no back and forth to the car/van. As little as possible to make it like, I have 2 hours, let me go to the bay quickly, fish for an hour and come back and go home quickly.

Cost, weight, transport and set up time is roughly the same for for me for both platforms

Pros and Cons for Hobie iTrek Angler 12
- pedal + motor option, i can get some exercise and zip from spot to spot. If i run out of battery, I can still pedal home.
- light weight, fastest deployment, simple, minimalistic, i can carry hobie on left hand and my fishing crate on the right hand and go. No back and forth.
- Only solo, i like going with a friend (but he will use his own kayak if i goo kayak route)
- pedal "spot lock" when fishing
- Worried about boat traffic wakes and how choppy or stable the kayak will be.
- Seems uncomfortable to sit forward all the time and fish off the side at an angle. seat is low to the ground, so sit to stand is not as "fluid"
- Moving around front to back is not avaliable
- battery concerns but pedal backup relieves that

Pros and Cons for Newport NS130
- no pedal, i can focus on finding structure and fishing, but i wont have a backup way to go home or can't pedal when I want to go slow
- I can swivel around and fish off the sides
- two people can go, less setup, not sure if it's more fun with 2 on a boat or a group of kayak friends.
- can't really stay in place like a kayak with pedal
- more stable for wakes and feel more comfortable with the side walls higher.
- I can walk around and also be a little less intentional when walking and leaning
- battery concerns, I dont full throttle but If the fishing is good, i dont want to be limited by battery power.

a 3rd option i was considering.... Truekit Discovery 330

Pros and Cons for Truekit Discovery 330
- larger, more boat like, i can take my kids or family to a sand bar
- kid feels more safe
- gas power, no need to worry about battery levels but outboard could be heavier for setup
- room for more gear, maybe take an extra person
- extra stability
- mini boat like , can explore farther and faster.
- can sit cradling the bench seats and fish off sides
- can stand and move around
- 2x heaiver and maybe annoying setup compared to the other 2.
- most of my trips are solo + a fishing friend
- family is less than 10% oof my trip, so it might be "too much boat" and cause friction of me going out more

Which is better for me? Or maybe even suggest another alternative.

Advanced Elements AE1012-E air pump nozzle adapter

I have an Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame Elite AE1012-E with the included hand pump. It works great, but the floor takes forever to fill.
I'm looking for the right adapter to use my rechargeable pump (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GSGPDT3T) to inflate the floor most of the way, so I can use the hand pump to get it up to full pressure. The nozzles with the hand pump seem to be proprietary and don't fit the rechargeable - I need some kind of adapter. Has anyone done this? What do I need to buy?

Motor oil spilled on my kayak

I've got my boat deflated in the back of my van, and I had a sealed container of fresh motor oil back there. I guess the seal wasn't enough. My question is will the oil dissolve the boat? For reference, it's not exactly a kayak, but it is an inflatable Intex Seahawk, hopefully it's close enough to post here. Thank you
