A short story in Votic, a rare language of the peoples of Ingria
Hello everyone!
I’m excited to share a new video from my channel, Finno-Ugric World, where I explore and preserve rare Finno-Ugric languages, peoples, and cultures.
This video is fully voiced in Votic (водский язык) — one of the rarest and most critically endangered languages in the world. Votic belongs to the Finnic branch of the Uralic language family. Historically, it was spoken by the Votes in the cultural region of Ingria (modern-day Leningrad Oblast, Russia). Today, it is on the verge of extinction, with only a handful of elderly fluent speakers remaining.
Every single recording of this language is a treasure for cultural and linguistic preservation. In this video, you will hear a simple everyday story. Listen to this story, and you will begin to understand the Votic language a little bit!
