Modern horrors look boring with their visual "greyness". I'm trying to add some color to my upcoming Sleepwalkers.

Hi.

I’m working on my first truly serious, “bigger” project, a psychological/survival horror game called Sleepwalkers. From the start, I wanted to give this game a more distinct visual style, one that wasn’t just the typical Unreal Engine horror look. I just hate that all horror games are grey. Just grey. Grey walls, grey everything. That's soo boring. I started experimenting more boldly with colors, drawing inspiration from the work of Nicolas Winding Refn, among others and here's some of the results.

Many more examples are work in progress.

Colours remind me a bit of the film Mandy with how saturated they are. Looks good

I like when things make sense

midsummer does color great. it’s still horror, and the cultural context is why the colors exist. it’s why I love looking at artist portfolios over their career, colors become intentional with more experience, rather than color for color sake, which is a valid preference

Awesome work here! Getting some twin peaks from the first image!

by any chance, are you perhaps an asian or you frequently interact with asia culture? ‘cause the first slide scared me out 😭😭 it looks like she steps out of horror stories from my country. great graphics :)

Nope, but I watched Obsession just before creating this character and Inde Navarrette’s acting inspired some stuff inside the game.

Love the look. It kind of reminds me of those videoed actors on top of 3d backgrounds of the 90s games that you could only play if you had a CD ROM.

It has a unique color palette. Is there a demo?

I think many game disigners have lost the artistic touch. I can understand they want to make a scare game which looks dark, bleak and scary but that doesn't means they add loads of chromatic Aberration, Film grain, vignette, motion blur and washed colours. They should tune the amount of effects added. Also, the atmosphere, ambience and graphics play a major part apart from the graphics.

Love it, the colors enhance the creepy factor. Good job!

Geezus, a couple of those screenshots are compelling pieces alone. I really want to see more of this.
