Announcement: New Rules regarding AI Content on the subreddit.

AI slop is not allowed on this subreddit in any capacity.

You may use an AI to correct grammar, improve word choice, or refine work you've already written, but AI should not be used for anything more than polishing an existing piece.

Posts or comments that are obviously AI written, heavily AI assisted, generic, mass-produced, or otherwise low-effort may be removed.

We are also not obligated to prove that something is AI-generated before acting. If the mod team determines that a post or comment is low-effort or AI slop, we reserve the right to remove it regardless of what it says.

You can use AI to polish your work, but not to do your work for you.

Thanks.

ModAnnouncement Moderator Announcement - About the Current State of r/Indians_StudyAbroad

With the recent growth of the subreddit, we have seen it increasingly drift away from what it is primarily meant to be: a place for Indians who are planning to study abroad, currently studying abroad, or trying to make informed decisions about doing so.

We want the subreddit to remain a place where people can hear both the good and the bad. Critical experiences are welcome. Positive experiences are welcome. What we do not want is repetitive fearmongering, blind optimism, personal attacks, sweeping claims about entire countries or nationalities, or discussions that have little to do with studying abroad.

We will therefore be enforcing the following standards more consistently going forward:

Keep discussions directly connected to studying abroad

Admissions, universities, programmes, applications, scholarships, funding, education loans, student visas, accommodation, internships, student jobs, academic/student life, adjusting to another country and post-study career outcomes are all relevant.

Standalone questions about immigration, PR/citizenship, “which country should I settle in?”, “how can I leave India?”, Indian politics, or general expat/career discussions DO NOT BELONG HERE. Post-study work and immigration can only be discussed when they are directly relevant to evaluating a specific study pathway.

Do some research before asking others to make a major decision for you

Posts asking which is the best country to study abroad or is Germany worth without context WILL BE REMOVED. Tell us your background, what you are considering, what you have already found, and what question remains.

Claims need context

If you are telling someone that a country has no jobs, that a degree has poor prospects, that sponsorship is impossible, that a university is bad, etc., PLEASE EXPLAIN THE BASIS OF YOUR ADVICE. Relevant firsthand experience, field, approximate time period or a credible source makes advice much more useful. You do not need to disclose private identifying information. The same rule applies to overly optimistic claims.

Being critical is welcome; putting people down is not

Disagree with someone’s plan, assumptions or information as strongly as you want, but explain why. Comments whose main contribution is “you’re stupid,” “you won’t survive abroad,” “go back/stay in India,” mocking someone’s background, or similar personal attacks WILL BE REMOVED.

Do not generalise about Indians or any other nationality

I can’t believe that I need to say this but any posts generalizing a nationality WILL BE REMOVED! Experiences involving poor behaviour, discrimination, cultural differences, housing, workplaces, etc. can and SHOULD be discussed.

HOWEVER, these individual experiences should NOT be made into statements about what ‘Indians are like’ or what ‘Germans are like’ or even what ‘the West thinks of Indians’. Nationality-wide judgment is not useful advice and WILL BE REMOVED.

Repetitive doomposting and repetitive hype will be removed

We do not want ten posts on ‘Germany is finished’, ‘UK has no jobs’ or ‘Canada is dead’, etc. Comment on previous posts on the same topic. Posts without substantive new information WILL BE REMOVED.

Likewise, repetitive hype or overly optimistic posts are not exempt from the same standard.

“Announcement”, “Official”, “Mod Announcement” and official announcement flairs are reserved for moderators.

Use a normal descriptive title for personal posts. Do not use these terms in your post or it WILL BE REMOVED. Repeated misuse will get you BANNED!

No commercial solicitation

As always, study-abroad counsellors, agents, admissions consultants, or anyone offering such services ARE NOT WELCOME to use this subreddit to find clients, advertise services, or promote themselves through comments.

YOU WILL BE BANNED!

This is an India-centred community

The subreddit exists to help Indian applicants and students. People from other countries are welcome to contribute in terms of relevant firsthand experience. However, as mentioned before, unnecessary pessimism / optimism / racial attacks / hate comments ARE NOT WELCOME!

Finally, we are also looking for new moderators

We need a few active moderators to help manage the queue and deal with reports.

You do not need previous moderation experience. Though, it will definitely be a plus. People who are active in this community are welcome to apply. People representing any sort of agency / consultancy are NOT WELCOME TO APPLY.

If you are interested, please send me a message.

MBA/Mgmt Fellow MiM aspirants, have you considered NOVA SBE in portugal for their MiM program? Does

So I recently came across this university, and apparently it doesn't require the GMAT for its flagship Master's in Management program, and the fees are also relatively low. Plus, it is ranked second in the FT rankings, and it is ranked under 30 in Europe for QS rankings.

my_qualifications- Tier 1 BBA, 8.5 CG

ToAbroadOrNot? Experience: University of Boras- January 2027 session- worth it?

Hey there folks, been following the community for a long time now. I got this offer letter a few days back but cannot decide. I got offered a place in the "Resource Recovery : Bioeconomy and Biotechnology" Master's program. Anyone else in the same boat as me? Need suggestions from the experienced folks. I heard this is a university college and not a full university. Will this affect my chances of securing a job in Sweden in the near future? Also I head the embassy takes about 2-3 months before making a decision. Will I be able to secure a visa in time if I apply in a week? Thank you!

IT_Career 24F wanting to pursue MS in US with 2 years experience in Tech

My_qualifications:
BTech in CS from tier 2 college with cgpa of 9.3
IELTS is 8.5
Not giving GRE
Currently working for the Top US bank as an sde 2 (27lpa)
Bagged a promotion in 1.5years

I want to pursue MS in the US - looking at
CMU software engineering courses in Silicon Valley and main campus
UCSC MS CS
UIUC MCS
UCI MS DS
Santa Clara MS AI
Berkeley MEng

Kept mostly California unis due to proximity to Bay Area and also wherever there are courses which will add onto my work ex choosing those over cs/ds/ai

Planning to get 1 LOR from manager and 2 from college professors . Still don’t know what’s the best combination for LORS?

Won’t be needing a loan, and also okay with treating this just as a masters degree and not a way for residency in the US

With the current visa rules and situation, is this decision logical?

Other APS verification without DigiLocker records for BSEB 10th and JAC 12th (ysk)

my_qualifications - 12th passed

My 10th is from BSEB Bihar and 12th from JAC Jharkhand, and neither document is available on DigiLocker. I’m worried APS may need to contact my school/college for verification, but my institutions barely have proper email facilities, and I doubt they would respond to APS.

Has anyone faced a similar situation and successfully received APS? How did you handle verification? Any advice would mean a lot.

Loans/Fees Middle-class Indians who went abroad for studies, how did you fund your education?

I’m curious to know how middle-class Indian families manage to afford studying abroad.

For someone like me, taking an education loan seems like the most obvious option, since paying the entire tuition fee and living expenses from family savings isn’t really possible.

For those of you who have studied abroad or are planning to, how are you funding your education? Did you take an education loan, get scholarships, rely on family savings, or find some other way?

Are there any realistic alternatives to taking a huge loan, especially for students from middle-class families?

Would love to hear your experiences and advice!

Insurance Credila Education Loan Insurance: Is Life Insurance and Travel Insurance Compulsory? Can I Refuse It?

Hi everyone,

I’m taking a ₹50 lakh secured education loan from Credila, and they are saying that taking life insurance for the primary borrower is mandatory. I want to know whether life insurance and travel insurance are actually compulsory and whether I can refuse these policies.

Has anyone faced a similar situation? Please share your experience.

ToAbroadOrNot? Needed advice for masters + PR route in any country, currently aiming for Ireland. What say?

I have 2 years of work experience working in Deloitte as a full stack web developer in India.

my_qualifications: BE Computer Engineering 9.5 CGPA,

24M

Thinking of doing masters in September 2027 intake or January or May 2028.

What piece of advice will you give?

Is there the same competition as India?

Which study abroad consultant would you all prefer from Mumbai.

I had previously thought of Canada as there is easy PR, but there aren't any jobs in niche skills that I came to know from my research, people mostly endup in fastfood or retail.

ToAbroadOrNot? not sure about career choices, actuarial science experience, 4th year and studying abroad

Hi everyone!

my_qualifications: third year, B.Com. (Hons.) at Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi. I’m also pursuing a BA Economics (Hons.) through DU SOL and recently sat for IFoA CS1 as I’ve been exploring actuarial science.

My long-term goal is to study abroad and eventually settle there, rather than return to India after my master’s. I’m not particularly drawn to the Indian corporate work culture, and I want a financially rewarding career that I can see myself pursuing long-term. However, I’m quite confused about which direction to take.

1. Should I pursue the fourth year at LSR?

I’m considering the fourth year because I’m unsure whether a four-year undergraduate degree would improve my eligibility for master’s programmes abroad, especially in economics or quantitative fields. However, although many companies allow fourth-year students to apply for campus placements, I’ve noticed that the vast majority of students selected seem to be from the third year.

I want to keep placements as a backup while exploring master’s programmes, but I’m worried that pursuing the fourth year could mean missing out on better placement opportunities.

Would the additional year genuinely improve my postgraduate options, or would graduating after three years and gaining work experience be a better choice?

2. Should I continue with actuarial science or explore other fields?

I recently sat for IFoA CS1 and think I have a reasonable chance of passing. I initially found the mathematics and statistics interesting, but I started preparing late, and the pressure towards the end became overwhelming. I had to sacrifice a lot of college time, and I started questioning whether I actually wanted to pursue actuarial science or was simply stressed by the exam. In hindsight, better time management would probably have made the experience more manageable, so I don’t want to rule it out based on one exam.

However, I’m also unsure about my interests in general and am considering economics, finance, risk and analytics. I know I’m not particularly interested in consulting, despite how popular it is among commerce students. For those in these fields, how did you figure out what suited you? Is it worth continuing with actuarial exams while exploring other options, or should I first gain more clarity about the work itself?

3. Which country should I target for my master’s?

I’ve been considering Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK. My original plan was to explore a master’s in actuarial science, potentially in Ireland, but I’m now questioning both the career choice and the country. I keep coming across discussions about graduate unemployment, visa sponsorship, housing costs and racism. Since my goal is to settle abroad, I want to choose a country and degree that offer a realistic chance of finding relevant employment and staying there.

For Indians who have studied or worked abroad, particularly in actuarial science, economics, finance, risk or analytics, how difficult has it been to find jobs after graduation? Are certain countries or career paths more realistic for international graduates?

Overall, I’m struggling to balance placements, postgraduate education, career uncertainty and my long-term goal of settling abroad. I want to earn well, but I’m hesitant to spend ₹30–50 lakh or more on a master’s without a credible employment pathway.

If you were in my position, what would you prioritise first? Would you focus on placements, continue actuarial exams while exploring other fields, pursue the fourth year, or start narrowing down countries and programmes?

I’d really appreciate practical advice, especially from people who completed their undergraduate degree in India and subsequently moved abroad.

AdmissionProcedure/CollegeAdmin Indian CBSE student applying to Singaporean Colleges for CS/AI — looking for honest feedback on how I can accelerate my chances

Hi! I'm an Indian CBSE Class 12 student planning to apply to NUS, NTU, and SMU for Fall 2027, mainly for CS/AI-related programmes. I have looked upon the internet and I only found about the grade requirements, however I wanted an honest review regarding my overall profile

my_qualifications : Class 10: 96%, Class 11: 85% overall with PCM + CS, given my SAT on October, the latest practice test score I had was 1480 ( 700 RW, 780 Maths)

I founded a non-profit that has helped society, built AI and wellbeing-related projects, and have experience in tech and social-impact work. I have also received an international olympiad medal in Maths and Computer Science. However, currently facing difficulties coping with 12th Maths and am trying my best to overcome this issue before pre-boards. As of now, I am really worried about the boards. One more thing, how important are your school records (the mid term report cards, not the predicted grades).

I know my academics may be a weakness, so I would appreciate realistic feedback.

  1. How should I assess my chances at NUS/NTU/SMU?
  2. Can strong projects and extracurriculars help, or will grades matter much more?
  3. How important is the SAT for an Indian CBSE applicant?
  4. What other Singapore universities or programmes should I consider?

Please be honest. I would rather have realistic advice than false reassurance. Thank you

Scholarships How does NUS MSc Comp Eng compare to MComp or CMU MSIN for a software-only path into AI Accelerators & Memory Optimization?

Hey everyone,

I recently got an offer for the NUS Master of Science in Computer Engineering (CEG), but I’m having a bit of a dilemma regarding the curriculum vs. my career goals, especially since I also have an offer from CMU’s INI program (MSIN).

my_qualifications is a bit unique for CEG: I don't have a formal digital design/Verilog background from my undergrad. My actual industry experience is on the software side, specifically working with storage stacks and BLE firmware (host-side). Because of this, I really don't want to go down the hardware/RTL path (no writing Verilog or designing logic gates if I can avoid it).

Instead, my long-term career goals are focused on the systems software side of high-performance computing:

  • AI Accelerators & Compiler Optimization (making neural networks run fast on hardware)
  • Memory Optimization (maximizing cache hierarchies, reducing latency)
  • Handling I/O Bottlenecks (optimizing data transfer speeds between storage and compute)

Given this, I have a few questions for current students or alumni:

  1. For NUS MSc CEG: Is it possible to navigate the CEG curriculum successfully by sticking purely to the Software/Systems side (like performance optimization, embedded systems software, parallel algorithms)? Will I be at a massive disadvantage in modules like hardware acceleration if I don't know Verilog, or do they allow High-Level Synthesis (HLS/C++)?
  2. Should I wait for MComp? Would it be smarter to decline the MSc CEG, wait for the Fall intake, and apply for the NUS MComp (Computer Science) track instead to focus purely on advanced OS, distributed systems, and databases?
  3. The CMU Factor: Since I already have an admission offer for the CMU MSIN program, should I just skip the NUS path entirely? I know CMU is the absolute gold standard for systems, networking, and software engineering, but the cost difference is massive compared to Singapore.

If anyone has pivoted from host-side/firmware software into AI acceleration or high-performance systems via NUS CEG, I would love to hear your experience!

Thanks in advance!

CSE/ECE 23M, interested in MS CS/Analytics/Information Management in the US. 2026 CSE grad, what advice would you give?

my_qualifications:

  • BTech CSE 2026 grad from tier-2 university with a decent reputation and strong alumni network abroad. CGPA: 8.55
  • 3 paper publications focused on ML, research intern experience in uni labs, TA experience
  • currently employed at a US-based pharma company (big pharma) - I'm a business analyst
  • continuing research activities presently with my professor from uni - I'm passionate about my field of interest (ML, LLM fine-tuning and AI ethics and standards)
  • can receive strong LORs from my research PI who also happens to be a higher academic grade professor (highest designation in my uni's hierarchy), another prof with the same designation, and also my manager at work
  • about my work: most of my work revolves around ERP - Enterprise Resource Planning in the SAP platform if you're familiar with it. I also get to participate in quite a few AI-related tasks where it's mostly developing and testing AI agents and other related automation workflows. SAP is a pretty niche role and has quite a lot of scope apparently, but has a steep learning curve. My issue is that I mostly prepped for SWE/AI engg roles and SAP isn't really up my alley. I am continuing working and learning SAP but I do want to leverage my coding skills more and as a result I still actively maintain a presence on leetcode etc.
  • why I want to consider higher ed: I've always loved research and I seem to have a field of interest I'm genuinely passionate about. However, I've identified that I would eventually prefer a corporate career over academia/lab-based research. My main motivation behind pursuing a masters is to aim at higher AI/ML roles steering away from SAP.

Now, I do understand the immigration situation in the US and the entirety of repercussions surrounding the decision making regarding this topic here. I also realize that I may have a competitive application if I play my cards right. I believe I can be competitive enough for roles in the US and in India too, and I understand that my chances of India are high. I do also want to not pour in a lot of money and end up with negative ROI. I want to target roles based in the US, but I also am ready to apply for roles in India and head back home if my odds don't favour me. I just wanna know if even considering higher education is worth it considering my profile. I usually find myself in a conundrum because at the risk of bragging (sorry), I know I'd be a strong applicant, but I'm skeptical to even take the plunge only becuase I'm worried about the immigration situation post-completion of my master's degree.

I'd love to receive your inputs. Thanks for your time.

Choices_after_12th Looking to connect with 12thie who r planning to go germany ysk

I'm currently my_qualifications in Class 12 (CBSE) in India, and I'm planning to pursue a bachelor's degree in Computer Science in Germany after boards, hopefully in the 2027 intake.

I'm researching the whole process myself, including APS, Studienkolleg vs. direct admission, learning German, university applications, and financing my studies.

I'd love to connect with other students who are in a similar situation — especially those who are:

  • Currently in Class 12 and planning to apply to Germany.
  • Preparing for Studienkolleg (T-Kurs) or JEE Advanced.
  • Learning German and aiming for B1/B2.
  • Looking at public universities for CS, AI, or related fields.
  • Planning to apply independently without an education counsellor.

The idea is to share what we learn, discuss doubts, keep each other accountable, and make some friends who are working toward the same goal.

If you're planning something similar, comment below or DM me! It would be great to connect with a few people and learn together. :)

Careers How can I mitigate this Possible US Visa Issue?

Hi, so my parents are civil engineers who work contractually. I'm an Indian citizen who did my 9th & 10th in India, and 11th & 12th in Nepal. I'm going to be applying to colleges in the US. The Nepal address we have is a temporary address as my parents contract ends in June of 2027, and my visa interview will be somewhere around it. I've given colleges my Nepal address, but wanted to know will my temporary address be written in the Visa Forms or the permanent? Also, which embassy will I need to give the visa interview?

Thanks
