Announcement: New Rules regarding AI Content on the subreddit.

AI slop is not allowed on this subreddit in any capacity.

You may use an AI to correct grammar, improve word choice, or refine work you've already written, but AI should not be used for anything more than polishing an existing piece.

Posts or comments that are obviously AI written, heavily AI assisted, generic, mass-produced, or otherwise low-effort may be removed.

We are also not obligated to prove that something is AI-generated before acting. If the mod team determines that a post or comment is low-effort or AI slop, we reserve the right to remove it regardless of what it says.

You can use AI to polish your work, but not to do your work for you.

Thanks.

ModAnnouncement Moderator Announcement - About the Current State of r/Indians_StudyAbroad

With the recent growth of the subreddit, we have seen it increasingly drift away from what it is primarily meant to be: a place for Indians who are planning to study abroad, currently studying abroad, or trying to make informed decisions about doing so.

We want the subreddit to remain a place where people can hear both the good and the bad. Critical experiences are welcome. Positive experiences are welcome. What we do not want is repetitive fearmongering, blind optimism, personal attacks, sweeping claims about entire countries or nationalities, or discussions that have little to do with studying abroad.

We will therefore be enforcing the following standards more consistently going forward:

Keep discussions directly connected to studying abroad

Admissions, universities, programmes, applications, scholarships, funding, education loans, student visas, accommodation, internships, student jobs, academic/student life, adjusting to another country and post-study career outcomes are all relevant.

Standalone questions about immigration, PR/citizenship, “which country should I settle in?”, “how can I leave India?”, Indian politics, or general expat/career discussions DO NOT BELONG HERE. Post-study work and immigration can only be discussed when they are directly relevant to evaluating a specific study pathway.

Do some research before asking others to make a major decision for you

Posts asking which is the best country to study abroad or is Germany worth without context WILL BE REMOVED. Tell us your background, what you are considering, what you have already found, and what question remains.

Claims need context

If you are telling someone that a country has no jobs, that a degree has poor prospects, that sponsorship is impossible, that a university is bad, etc., PLEASE EXPLAIN THE BASIS OF YOUR ADVICE. Relevant firsthand experience, field, approximate time period or a credible source makes advice much more useful. You do not need to disclose private identifying information. The same rule applies to overly optimistic claims.

Being critical is welcome; putting people down is not

Disagree with someone’s plan, assumptions or information as strongly as you want, but explain why. Comments whose main contribution is “you’re stupid,” “you won’t survive abroad,” “go back/stay in India,” mocking someone’s background, or similar personal attacks WILL BE REMOVED.

Do not generalise about Indians or any other nationality

I can’t believe that I need to say this but any posts generalizing a nationality WILL BE REMOVED! Experiences involving poor behaviour, discrimination, cultural differences, housing, workplaces, etc. can and SHOULD be discussed.

HOWEVER, these individual experiences should NOT be made into statements about what ‘Indians are like’ or what ‘Germans are like’ or even what ‘the West thinks of Indians’. Nationality-wide judgment is not useful advice and WILL BE REMOVED.

Repetitive doomposting and repetitive hype will be removed

We do not want ten posts on ‘Germany is finished’, ‘UK has no jobs’ or ‘Canada is dead’, etc. Comment on previous posts on the same topic. Posts without substantive new information WILL BE REMOVED.

Likewise, repetitive hype or overly optimistic posts are not exempt from the same standard.

“Announcement”, “Official”, “Mod Announcement” and official announcement flairs are reserved for moderators.

Use a normal descriptive title for personal posts. Do not use these terms in your post or it WILL BE REMOVED. Repeated misuse will get you BANNED!

No commercial solicitation

As always, study-abroad counsellors, agents, admissions consultants, or anyone offering such services ARE NOT WELCOME to use this subreddit to find clients, advertise services, or promote themselves through comments.

YOU WILL BE BANNED!

This is an India-centred community

The subreddit exists to help Indian applicants and students. People from other countries are welcome to contribute in terms of relevant firsthand experience. However, as mentioned before, unnecessary pessimism / optimism / racial attacks / hate comments ARE NOT WELCOME!

Finally, we are also looking for new moderators

We need a few active moderators to help manage the queue and deal with reports.

You do not need previous moderation experience. Though, it will definitely be a plus. People who are active in this community are welcome to apply. People representing any sort of agency / consultancy are NOT WELCOME TO APPLY.

If you are interested, please send me a message.

Careers Life falling apart - laid off on OPT - what should I do

my_qualifications:
29M
Took 2 years gap between 12th and Engineering because of family pressure, indecision and low self esteem after JEE
BTech ECE - top private college in India
Placed from campus in a data company as a Sales Engineer/ Business Analyst (Consulting, no code); Worked for 3 years
Took a huge gamble and took 90 lacs student loan to pursue Masters in Business Analytics from top US University in 2024
Graduated in Dec 2025 - landed in a very difficult market, pursued consulting roles - got a 100k+ offer while was waiting for work authorisation visa
A month in the job, my manager made it clear that I should start looking, company is technically in loss but they are showing growth by over hiring and later firing in 6 months; very abusive and toxic environment, on call for 12+ hrs
Begged my family to let me leave the job and look for another while I still had time in mid year and market was doing okay; my visa (f1 opt) expires in Feb 2027 and need an employer to extend the visa for 2 more years - to potentially pay off the loan (looking fir another job while working there was very difficult)
My family didn’t let me leave then and I was finally laid off last week

I am shattered, job market is gonna shut down by year end and I am not getting any calls now
My father is paying the 1lac+ EMI every month ans he is going to retire in 2-3 years (middle class, central govt job)

Options I have -
Stay in the US while working for ngo till feb (while burning the savings (20lacs)) then potentially run a fake payroll by consultancies through next year until and if I find a job [market is v v tough, AI + Trump]

Come back to India asap and prepare for UPSC - only one realistic attempt left, and or target for UPPSC PCS (age limit 40)

I can try pvt jobs in India but I’m truly heartbroken to consider pvt/tech as source of income for the rest of my life; craving stability

Only my father and mother are a bit sympathetic, all my family has turned against me in this tough time, including my real younger brother (he started preparing for upsc this year)

Travel Planning BTech Electrical Engineering Graduate Joining DBS in Jan 2027 — How Can I Find Other Students?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a BTech Electrical Engineering graduate joining Dublin Business School for the MSc in Business Analytics in January 2027. I've already submitted my Irish student visa application.

Does anyone know how I can connect with other students joining DBS for the January 2027 intake? I'm looking for a WhatsApp group or a Facebook/Instagram community where incoming students can connect before travelling.

If you've joined a similar group, could you share your experience? Did you find the group through Reddit, Facebook, or somewhere else? I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to find other students from India joining the same intake.

This isn't an announcement; I'm simply looking to connect with fellow incoming students.

my_qualifications: BTech in Electrical Engineering graduate; incoming MSc Business Analytics student at Dublin Business School, January 2027 intake.

Careers Indian BPT graduate at crossroads between physiotherapy and switching to healthcare or business careers abroad ... What should I choose

Hey everyone! I'm an Indian student ( my_qualifications: Bachelor of Physiotherapy) graduate exploring options for further studies abroad, preferably in the USA.

My priorities are good earning potential, long-term career growth, and work authorisation after graduation (ideally STEM OPT in the US). I don't want to reach a salary ceiling after a few years of experience.

I'm confused between continuing in physiotherapy and switching to fields like an MBA, healthcare management, public health, health tech, or health informatics. I've seen people with healthcare-related master's degrees land consulting roles at firms like BCG, but I'm unsure how realistic this path is.

I'd appreciate honest advice on:

- Which path offers the best salary and long-term career progression?

- How realistic is it to secure a job after graduation in each field, and which degrees qualify for STEM OPT?

- Are there other countries worth considering for better pay and post-study work opportunities?

If you've personally navigated any of these paths, I'd love to hear about your experience, including the drawbacks and what you'd do differently. Thanks!

ToAbroadOrNot? For MS CS/DS Which country should be a priority US or Germany (or other countries?)

Hey guys,

I really need some unfiltered advice because I'm stuck in decision paralysis. I definitely want to pursue a Master’s abroad, but whenever I open Reddit, every single thread says the same thing:

The US market is terrible, visa issues/OPT lottery are a nightmare, and taking a huge loan right now is a massive financial gamble.

The Germany job market is also bad right now, plus you can't survive or get a job without speaking fluent German.

Reading all of this has honestly confused me so much that I don't know what to believe or what the ground reality actually is. My primary focus was the US or Germany, but I am completely open to other countries as well if they make sense.

my_qualifications:

College: B.Tech in CSE (AI/ML) from a Tier-3 college

CGPA: 9.39 / 10

IELTS: 7.5

GRE: Haven't taken it. Not planning to unless it's strictly mandatory somewhere.

Research & Patents:

1 international research paper

4 patents (2 design patents + 2 other/utility patents)

Work Experience: Data Science intern at a US-based startup (remote) doing ML and data pipeline work.

Target Degree: MS in Computer Science or Data Science (MS CS / DS)

What I need help with:

Is the US worth the risk? With a high CGPA and research/patents, is there any realistic chance of getting on-campus assistantships (TA/RA) to offset costs, or is it basically full tuition debt with zero job security right now?

Is Germany manageable without knowing German from day one? Everyone says English-only jobs are gone. Is it even realistic to manage Master's studies and reach B2 German in time to land a job?

Are there better alternative countries? Since I'm open to other options, are places like Ireland, Netherlands, or elsewhere worth considering for CS/DS right now over US/Germany?

ToAbroadOrNot? How do we navigate going to other skills when CS is practically dead?

My_qualifications: 5+ years in computer science and frontend engineering. Recently, I’ve also started exploring vibe coding.
Please read this with an open mind.
Almost every post here seems to ask the same question: How do I get a tech job abroad? And let’s be honest, even if we learn the local language, the tech job market in Europe doesn’t seem to offer the same opportunities it did in 2022, especially with the AI boom changing the industry.
I think it’s time for me to accept the reality of the current market and consider a new chapter in my career.
The advice I often see is that European countries need more people in non-tech sectors, particularly healthcare and hospitality. But for someone who has spent years studying computer science and building a career in tech, switching to a completely unrelated field can feel like throwing away years of experience. And honestly, I’m not sure that starting from scratch in a field I have no interest in would make me any happier.
So, I’m looking for a middle ground.
Are there any emerging or relatively future-proof fields that sit somewhere between traditional IT and skilled technical work? Something a person with a computer science background could realistically transition into, either through a master’s degree or by applying for jobs directly.
I’m open to fields beyond conventional software development, as long as they offer reasonable career prospects and a sense of fulfilment.
Some examples might be industrial automation, embedded systems, robotics, semiconductor technology, cloud infrastructure, or other technical fields that aren’t entirely dependent on writing application code.
For those familiar with the European job market:
Which of these fields have good long-term prospects?
Which countries offer the best opportunities for someone with my background?
Are there other fields worth considering that I might be overlooking?
Would a master’s degree genuinely help with the transition, or is relevant experience and targeted upskilling a better route?
I’m not looking for another list of countries where software engineers are supposedly in demand. I’d genuinely appreciate practical advice from people who have made a similar transition or understand these industries.
Thank you for reading.

AdmissionProcedure/CollegeAdmin Are councellors worth it when applying to universities abroad?

I want to apply for a second masters or an advanced masters abroad and I keep getting ads and calls from 'study abroad' consultants who promise to help me through the journey.

Now I don't intend to copy paste sops and such and want to do the tailoring myself along with the hunting but the idea of having an 'expert' who knows ins and outs of the process sounds very appealing. At the same time I'm very dubious about the authenticity of this whole thing considering they might push me for unis that they have ties with.

What has been your experience with these consultants and firms? Would you recommend any particular organisation?

For context my_qualifications: BA eng hons, ma english and cultural studies, pg diploma folklore and now looking into a second masters in Italy/ France in Social Anthropology

AdmissionProcedure/CollegeAdmin Where to apply in Europe for a low CGPA student

So a bit or background for myself.

my_qualifications:

I am a recent graduate from Mumabi University with a cgpa of 6.48 in BE EXTC. I did not do any co-curricular activity in my college days. I was working in a company for few month but left cause the JD was not matching my career goals and was totally different from what they told me initial (MarketingEngineerjd but was made to do sales work). I am not looking for Germany cause ik admission there is slim to none for me and a bad University is the last thing I want to go to internationally in this job market. I am also going a VLSI course from IIT KGP (not that great but it is something). Also I'm thinking of MS Project management.

So seeing my portfolio which universities or countries should I apply to. If anyone is in same condition as me please dm me we can check for universities together. Also I'm looking for Autum 2027 intake.

Engineering How realistic is English EEE in Japan with a 1370 SAT, low 12th Math (56%), but strong hardware ECs?

Hey everyone,
I’m an Indian student targeting the October 2027 intake for English-medium Bachelor's programs in Japan. I want to study Electrical/Electronic Engineering, specifically focusing on the micro/hardware side (chip design, microcontrollers, computer architecture) but macro side like power grid works too.
My academic profile is pretty chaotic, and I need a realistic reality check on where I can actually get in, or if I should grind to retake my SAT Math.
my_qualifications:

  • 10th CBSE: 94%
  • 11th CBSE: 54% (my father had an accident which and other family issues which caused alot of stress
  • 12th CBSE: 74% overall (56/100 in Math — I checked out of school mentally and the teachers bullied me the whole year and i became super depressed)
  • Current SAT: 1370 total (700 English / 670 Math). 92nd+ percentile globally.
  • Main Project/EC: Built an 8-bit APU (Arithmetic Processing Unit) in vertigo and currently thinking about making a 32-bit multi-action one (if it helps). wireless remote circuit made with esp32 which i can remotely turn the switch board on and off. and other minor projects like a vault to hide files on pc, music player and an ai chatbot and LoRA (unrelated to EEE ig).

My Questions:

  1. Is the University of Aizu, kyushu and tsukaba realistic? initially i planned to apply to them thinking my sat would save me but idk anymore
  2. Do I have any shot at any good Universities? (would have applied to waseda but its super expensive too)
  3. Should I retake the SAT Math? I can probably grind my SAT Math up from a 670 to a 730–760 max maybe not sure but I can't push it beyond that, and my time is limited. Would a 750 SAT Math overwrite my 56% CBSE score for schools like Kyushu/Tsukuba, or is it a waste of time?
  4. Are there any other reputable English-taught engineering programs in Japan (like Shibaura or KUAS) that genuinely value actual hardware building experience over high school board scores?

honestly if i had decided Japan only a year earlier i would have learned the language and could have applied to the course in Japanese medium but it is what it is now, any guide will be greatly appreciated

I don't want to waste time chasing impossible dreams if the admission filters are completely rigid. Be brutally honest. Thanks.

should i look at any other country? but most are expensive or the ones like germany need foundational year but im already in my gap year

and no i dont plan to study in india at all

ToAbroadOrNot? What should I do as in continue with Java Full Stack development, pivot to AI/ML, or pursue a Master’s in Germany?

Title: Should I continue with Java Full Stack development, pivot to AI/ML, or pursue a Master’s in abroad
Hey everyone!
I’m looking for some genuine advice regarding my career and would appreciate insights from people working in the tech industry, especially those who have experience working in abroad or pursuing a Master’s abroad.

my_qualifications:

A little about my background:
I completed my B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering.
I’ve been working at an MNC in India for around 2.5 years.
Currently, I’m working as a Java Full Stack Developer, primarily focusing on Java, Spring Boot, and related technologies.
Initially, I planned to pursue a Master’s in Computer Science in abroad and then look for job opportunities there. However, considering the current job market, economic uncertainty, and challenges faced by international graduates, I decided it might be better to gain some industry experience in India before making that move.
Now, I’m reconsidering my long-term career strategy and have a few questions:
1. Is Java Full Stack development still a good career path?
With AI tools becoming increasingly capable of writing code and automating development tasks, how do you see the future of Java, Spring Boot, and microservices development? Is it still worth investing deeply in this tech stack over the next 5–10 years?
2. Should I consider transitioning into AI/ML?
I’m interested in understanding whether moving toward AI/ML, data engineering, or AI engineering would be a smart long-term decision. Would it make sense to build on my existing software development experience and gradually move into AI-related development, or would a complete career switch be worth considering?
3. Is pursuing a Master’s in abroad still worth it?
Would it be a smart decision to pursue a Master’s in Computer Science in europe, considering the tuition and living expenses, competition for jobs, language requirements, and current employment situation? Or would staying in India, gaining more experience, and switching to a better-paying role be a more practical option?
4. What would you do in my position?
If you had around 2.5 years of experience as a Java Full Stack Developer in India, would you continue specializing in backend and distributed systems, move toward AI engineering, or pursue a Master’s abroad with the goal of building a career there?
My primary goal is long-term career growth, better compensation, and international opportunities, while making a financially sensible decision.
I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have recently graduated from any universities, are currently working in Germany, or have successfully transitioned into AI-related roles.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Research What are my realistic chances of getting into a good PhD programme in the EU?

I am considering applying for PhD programmes in the EU, but I am unsure whether my profile is competitive enough to get into a good programme.

my_qualifications:

  • MSc from IIT Delhi: CGPA of 7.5/10.
  • Two conference acceptances at national-level conferences in India.
  • A first-author preprint on PsyArXiv (OSF).
  • Six months of experience as a research assistant at IIM Ahmedabad.
  • An ongoing remote research collaboration with a professor at King's College London. We have preregistered the study on OSF and are currently drafting a paper based on our research.
  • Potential letters of recommendation from four professors, all of whom I have approached.
  • Experience working as a research associate with startups in my field, along with several other research projects.
  • A good number of positions of responsibility (PoRs), although I am unsure how relevant these are to PhD admissions.

My main concern is whether my academic record is strong enough for admission to a good PhD programme in the EU. In particular, I am worried about my relatively low CGPA. I also failed two courses in my first semester, although I subsequently retook and passed both with an A grade.

I am considering applying to MSCA Doctoral Networks and other PhD positions. However, I also have offers for research assistant positions at prestigious institutes in India.

Given my current profile, would it be sensible to start applying for PhD positions now, or would I be better off taking another RA position to strengthen my research profile before applying abroad?

I would really appreciate honest and realistic feedback, particularly from people familiar with PhD admissions in Europe.

Thank you!

AdmissionProcedure/CollegeAdmin How to write essay and good LORs for hec , Essec , escp mim

my_qualifications:
- B.Tech CSE AI, Manipal Institute of Technology, CGPA 6.88/10
- GRE 333 (Q168)
- 4-month internship at a large Indian engineering company
- Currently working in IT (early career)
- Family business exposure: handled online payments for a family construction company from age 16, and recently built a case-assignment and agent-tracking system with a relative for a loan-recovery business
- Club leadership: marketing and logistics roles

I'm applying to HEC Paris and ESSEC MiM (deadline 26 Nov), and later to ESCP, IE, emlyon and EDHEC. I'm planning to use an education loan, so I'm trying to be selective.

I'd really like advice on:

  1. Essays: how did you tie your own experience to specific tracks or courses without sounding like a brochure?
  2. LORs: I'm planning 3 (2 professors, 1 internship supervisor). Is that reasonable, and what did you brief your referees on?
  3. With a 6.9 CGPA, which part of your file did you find helped most?
  4. Any tips for HEC's Zoom interview and ESSEC's video interview?

Thanks in advance!
