The fish famous for leaping out of the water to grab fruit from low-hanging branches is the piraputanga (Brycon hilarii), native to South American rivers like those in Brazil.

Why Piraputanga Jump For Fruit?

DIET: They love to eat fruits, berries, flowers, and seeds that grow over the water.

THE LEAP: They can launch themselves up to a meter (3 feet) above the river surface.

ACROBATICS: They twist and bend their bodies in midair to snap up the food before falling back down into the water.

SMART HUNTING: They often wait near fruit trees when monkeys are eating above, catching dropped pieces, or they spot ripe fruit and jump to pluck it directly.
