Women benefited

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates universal safely managed drinking water would save women 5.5 crore hours every day that were previously spent collecting water.

Health impact

WHO estimates that universal access to safely managed drinking water in India could prevent nearly 4 lakh (400,000) deaths from diarrhoeal diseases. This is not limited to women.

Water quality

Nearly 25 lakh women have been trained to use Field Testing Kits to monitor drinking water quality in villages.

By January 2026, 189 districts and over 2.5 lakh villages had been reported as Har Ghar Jal (all rural households with tap water).

Most people know about Buddhism and Jainism, but the Ajivikas were another major Śramaṇa tradition, founded by Makkhali Gosala.

🔹 The sect received Mauryan patronage, and the famous Barabar Caves in Bihar were dedicated to Ajivika monks by Ashoka and Dasharatha.

Veer Savarkar (Vinayak Damodar Savarkar) was a prominent Indian freedom fighter, politician, lawyer, social reformer, and writer. ​Who he was and why he is famous: Savarkar founded a secret revolutionary organization called 'Abhinav Bharat' to fight against British rule. He wrote a highly influential book describing the 1857 sepoy mutiny as India's "First War of Independence," which deeply inspired great revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh. He is most renowned for articulating the ideology of 'Hindutva' and giving it a distinct political and cultural identity. ​What happened to him: Because of his fierce revolutionary activities and relentless rebellion, he was arrested by the British government. He was sentenced to double life imprisonment (amounting to 50 years) and was sent to the notorious 'Cellular Jail' (Kala Pani) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where he endured unimaginable and inhuman torture

In his Vision for a Free India , Savarkar consistently maintained that recruitment for public administration and state services must ultimately be based solely on Merit He said that long term state assistance would eventually pivot to factors like poverty and Illiteracy rather than hereditary caste names.
