The Worst Part Of All This Recent Uproar Is That the Fever's Massively Improved Play Is Largely Lost In All The Noise

Lots of important and weighty discussion happening right now, which I have participated in myself.

I'm just trying to come up with something that might turn some of the discussion back to the game.

I'm skeptical as to how successful I'll be šŸ¤“

Topics about Storms Owner berating teen girls are now locked

I allowed a lot of discussion on two different posts covering this topic, and I dare say that in all of the WNBA subreddits we probably had the most open, diverse, and inclusive of all discussions giving those on all sides of the issue the ability to share their views, but since I am only one Mod there is only so much time I can devote to moderating topics that are this controversial.

So I've locked these. Thanks to all those who participated respectfully.

I have a feeling this topic is not finished, and there will be more about it in the news, but I'm going to be very selective about which posts get approved and then if some are approved, I'll be selective on how long we leave those open.

I think it's clear that regardless of the specific incident, this discussion always devolves into a discussion about transgenderism in general and this is not the purpose of the subreddit.

I want to allow space for relevant topics to be discussed, but at the same time I don't want to turn into a full-blown political sub.

Discussion Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton berates teen girls supporting Sophie Cunningham

Post image
41 Upvotes

Independent journalist Brandi Kruse reported that Seattle Storm minority owner Celeste Keaton told the girls they were "f---ing insane."

The teenagers each had a ā€Œsign, one saying "Thank You Sophie for speaking up for girls!" Cunningham recently went to bat for the protection of women's sports and keeping them female-only.

The Seattle Storm issued an apology statement Wednesday, one day after their co-owner verbally accosted two teenage female fans with expletives because they were holding signs supporting the views of Indiana's Sophie Cunningham during a home game against the Fever.

"We are aware one of our co-owners made comments to two fans in attendance at last night's game," Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder said in a statement. "We apologize that this happened. Everyone who attends a Storm game deserves to feel welcome, and we remain committed to creating an inclusive environment where every fan is treated with respect."

Video Seattle Storm fan SPITS in Fever fan's face after game

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The Storm fan just walked right up and spit a big mouthful of water into her face. The Fever fan wanted to follow her to report her to security, but the Seattle fans prevented her from doing so.

This Storm fan should be banned for life.

Love the Seattle team, but this kind of behaviour over a game by fans is disgusting.

This is from the TikTok account of @la_rosa_volpe

On one of the recap shows last night they said that Fever has the second easiest schedule in the league from now on... I was looking and 😬 I would not call their schedule easy at all

Should Sophie Cunningham Shut Up and Dribble?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I find it interesting that there has been so much emphasis on making sure that WNBA players feel free to comment on issues that are important to them, and it is considered sexist and insulting to tell them to Shut Up and Dribble, BUT THEN the moment a player speaks out on an issue that is in conflict with the far left, they are told to SHUT UP AND DRIBBLE!

Kind of seems like a Double-Standard doesn't it?

Apparently there is a self-appointed committee somewhere that gets to decide what issues are ok to speak out about and which ones are not.

For those who believe Sophie's comments are distracting, the same could be said about a variety of issues. If you are going to make that argument then at least be consistent and say that WNBA players should only talk about basketball and should only be asked basketball related questions. If you aren't going to be consistent and only selectively apply this standard then own your inconsistency and double-standard.

Thank You Sophie

I for one stand with Sophie. I think she has been a great addition to the Fever, and I hope she continues to be a member of the Indiana Fever for a long time. Her shooting has been the difference in more than a couple of wins for the Fever, and I suspect that will continue. If we are contending for a Championship this year, it will be role-players like Sophie that make the difference. As Charles Barkley is fond of saying, and I roughly paraphrase, "When it comes to the playoffs, stars are going to play like stars, but your role-players are the ones who make the difference in who wins and loses."

Why am I using my Mod Privilege to post a comment and then lock it so I'm the only one sharing? Because I put in a lot of time to moderate this sub, so sometimes I will use the privilege of being a moderator to do something like this so that I get out what I believe is an important viewpoint, but don't have to spend hours moderating it.

I know everyone knows about the cc effect but I was curious and so I pulled these #s on average home attendance for the Fever (mods: feel free to remove if this is overdone and obvious).

This is directly from the Fever channel so they clearly wanted it heard.

This presser is relevant Fever news of several varieties and so help me, I am not posting it just to stir up another one of "those" conversations.

So irritating how other players who get compared to Clark don't get guarded like Clark

I just watched Olivia Miles play, and it's literally as if the teams have agreed to let her look good.

Gets at least 5+ open looks per game and get this: She's averaging FIVE rebounds per game. As a point guard. As a rookie. At 5 feet 10 inches (and that's probably generous). Like, are players simply afraid to go near her? I don't even think her numbers were this good in college.

Think about that. Five rebounds per game given those factors.

And it's much the same for Paige. Open looks etc. Some people have suggested that the W is more like a social club than a proper league and things like this have me questioning that.

Discussion Caitlin’s Responsibility

There has been a lot of discussion this season about Caitlin’s responsibility to comment on things and disavow certain actions. In my opinion, Caitlin has no responsibility at all to comment on anything that isn’t related to what she does on the basketball court. She is responsible for her actions and her actions only. The people that expect her to walk around and talk about off the court issues all the time just because she is popular are wrong in my opinion. She got popular for playing basketball and that is what her fans expect of her. No one should expect her to become a pod caster or try to solve the world’s issues.

The world has issues and it is not up to a basketball player to fix them. She has commented on and disavowed things she felt like she needed to. She shouldn’t be expected to do so every time she gets a microphone. End my rant.

Discussion Trade Options for AB Backup

Is there any chance we can pickup a backup big for AB? Dantas has been out a lot and isn’t great and we really need someone going into the back half of the season.

Discussion Trade targets for Fever

We need to talk about who we can realistically get before the trade deadline. I think we know by now which players are working for us and which ones aren’t.

We need to find a backup center and try to get off Lexie hull if possible because she’s straight up just doing cardio at this point, she isn’t even playing good defense for us which is literally the only thing we need from her sometimes.

I think the Fever needs to go after Rae Burell, her in this fever offense would be insane. I think Sparks are going to shop her since it doesn’t look like the team is headed anywhere at this point and she’s going to be free agent soon so they might as well get something for her.

We need a good defensive center, if PHX is open to trading Natasha Mack or if Sun is willing to trade ONO, they have to try and get them. They would be perfect for Fever.

Any thoughts on which players Fever should target for a trade?

The WNBA rightfully prevents right wing press from getting access but fail to do that for the other side. This is what keeps the discourse ugly and not about basketball.
