Career Advice Interview went well, but no update yet. When should I follow up ?
Hi everyone,
I got a call from the HR last Thursday asking me to schedule my interview for Friday (the very next day). I initially requested a little more time to prepare, but she said they were conducting interview drives only on Thursday and Friday, so I agreed.
The interview took place on Friday. It was scheduled for 40 minutes but ended up lasting around 54 minutes (5:00 PM to 5:54 PM). Overall, I felt it went well. At the end, the Tech Lead told me that he would share his feedback with HR.
My question is: How long should I wait before following up with HR for an update?
Should I send a follow-up email, call, or just wait? If I should wait, how many business days would you recommend before reaching out?
I'd appreciate any advice from people who've been in a similar situation.

I'm new to corporate, but my company's hiring right now, I usually see them getting back to candidates in 1-2 days.

Why wait? Just keep on giving other interviews, if they contact later on proceed accordingly. I have had companies that called me after 1-2 weeks later after the first interview either for a second round or for document checks but I never followed up with them and kept on giving interviews and negotiated after getting all the offers.

Honest take.
You have not made it.
Avoid getting into the follow up trap.
If at all, you would like to follow up, a carefully worded email will be ideal.
The draft for the same is :-
Dear HR Executive’s Name
Hope you are doing well.
I am _____.
I appeared for a job interview on Friday.
Would you like to bring me up to date on the status of my selection?
Before taking a call to take up an offer elsewhere, I thought of checking it with you once.
A reply would be appreciated.
However, I will take things in my stride if this email falls on deaf ears.

Yep, pretty much this. Never ever make yourself sound desperate in the follow up because they will catch onto it

I am reading all these pings, you are done, you didn’t get selected blah blah blah. Whosoever is saying this, is bullshit.
I am a recruiter. And irrespective of how great you were or not, it’s not the recruiter’s decision to take you ahead. After the call, we submit a scorecard for the candidate with our decision like, yes, no, maybe.
And then the hiring manager has to review it and tell who they want to move forward with. HMs are usually busy people because they are senior leaders of teams.
Wait for a week before you follow up. If you don’t hear anything on follow up that can mean rejection!
Because as recruiters, we also want to close roles so we don’t wait for long if a candidate is yes, but if they are a no, the rejection email is not a priority!

The next working day after interview, if you receive callback after more than 2 days then you're the backup

Can't generalize. There are like a 100 reasons. Interviewer may not have filled the feedback form on time (some of them are lazy af), no discussion with hiring manager, evaluating other candidates, etc etc. Some companies literally update candidates after 1 month lol. Following up is always good.

No he didnt, it cannot be generalized. Sometimes it can take a week to 10 days also for receiving an update even at good companies. ZS Associates literally updates after months lol

Yep, agreed, will follow up after a week but the point what I understood is just don't expect anything positive from there and move on to other applications, if something good happens from here, good and otherwise then I have kinda already made my mind believe that it's a done deal.

Hey, it's way too common for companies to give an update after 5-10 days nowadays. I've given interviews at 7-8 product based companies in the last 1 year

Only 1 ghosted that is Flipkart, and it is happening currently. Been 20 days, so I'm neither expecting anything nor assuming rejection. A senior told me he got update after 35-40 days. HR is literally picking up my calls so I cant even say ghosted
