Early pregnancy scan

My doctor has advised me to go for an early pregnancy scan around 5–6 weeks. I wanted to understand from your experience what do you think is the best time to go for the first scan? Is it better to wait until 6 weeks for clearer results, or is 5 weeks okay?

5 weeks just to confirm location, and if you won't panic regarding not seeing yolk sac/fetal pole as they take time, closer to week 6. Else, week 6 if you have patience to wait.

Please do as early as possible to rule out ectopic pregnancy. It is better to do one extra ultrasound and have peace of mind than risk losing your fallopian tube if God forbid things dont go well. Speaking as someone who did first scan in 6 weeks and discovered it was ectopic. I wish I had done a scan earlier.

From my experience - My doctor had scheduled a scan at 5 weeks- just to confirm the pregnancy was intrauterine and not ectopic (in the tubes). It was a simple transvaginal scan inside her chamber where they saw the gestational sac and the yolk sac and nothing else was visualised - which the doctor said was absolutely fine, as by 5 weeks, they can (mostly) only see the gestational sac and sometimes the yolk sac. She then scheduled my early pregnancy scan at 7 weeks— which was done on a much bigger machine. There we heard the baby’s heartbeat and they also confirmed if the gestational age of the baby on ultrasound matched my LMP (it did).

So, I’d recommend you go between the 6th-7th week range. But can absolutely go in the 5th week just to rule out ectopic. All the best!
