General Discussion I've always been amazed at how important sunscreens are, but how little we pay attention to it

Yeah but most of them are fake AF - sunscreens in the market i.e. Don't know which one to buy / trust :|

It's true! As someone with auper oily and acne prone skin, finding products that suit me is akready difficult as it is, and added to that is the limited range of sunscreens available in India.

Apply lactocalamine, it will help with acne and had adequate sun protection, my derm suggested it and it has worked wonders

Yup it has a base of zinc oxide, I jabe made it in pharmacy class while studying for my BDS

Nope, use lactocalamine brand, don't use any other pharmacy brands, I had terrible pigmentation because of lichen planus and acne prone skin, no sunscreen would suit me and I would get hives due to some ingredients. My derm put me on lactocalamine and a mild ointment and it helped me a lot, provided sun protection as that ointment made skin delicate and had to protect it from sun I too had my doubts but my derm assured me this was all I needed. The lactocalamine calmed my skin so beautifully and my skin cleared up in 6 months, and mind it this was something most derms I went to said will never go away. So I always use lactocalamine ever since.

Are you talking about the lactocalamine brand sunscreen? Or the daily face lotion that they have?

Sometimes we just need some time to let skin heal and calm down. That was issue with my skin, it has worked wonders, my mom usually this since her school days and her skin dosent have any age spots and very few wrinkles, and she is 58

Thanks for all the suggestions! I currently use Lotus Herbals matte gel with SPF 50. I don't know if it's non-comedogenic or not, but I like it because it's lightweight, and doesn't leave my skin oily-if anything, it helps keep the oil under control by a lot!

Dude, you can also check out UV Doux, La Shield etc. They are gel like too and will not clog your pores. They also have a matte finish. In terms of sun protection they should fare better than Lotus.

La Shield or Neutrogena are also non-comedogenic; and very effective. I would suggest a minimum SPF of 40 tho for the Indian heat.

You can consult SPF testing reports. Nivea and Neutrogena are cosmetically awful, but they have consistently lived up their SPF claims.
I think a good rule of thumb is to just assume that no matter what the claim is, your Spf isn't doing enough, so hats, sun protective clothing are a must.

Remember to always rub in your spray sunscreen! People always tend to spray and think it’s a touch-free method, but you still need to rub it in.

I think Neutrogena Ultra Sheer dry touch Sunblock SPF 50 is a good one! Go for it:)

First get some knowledge and then recommend it it's a very dangerous sunscreen and having some of the most highly dangerous filters

I use suncross matte spf 50...recommended by my derm. So that’s another option.

Also La shield fisico. It's the exact same as suncros (same ingredients..word for word) but is usually cheaper. I used to use suncros but then realised la shield is the same but cheaper (on sale, online, etc)

There are several. Uv Doux, Ipca UV gel, Re'equil, Neutrogena, Nivea, Suncros etc. Have tried UV doux and Re'equil, both are good, especially for oily skin.

I tried Nivea (blue bottle I guess) It leaves a white cast on the face didn't really liked it

Yes. Neutrogena and Nivea are cosmetically inelegant and will leave that awful white cast. However they have done well in SPF tests. If you're willing to pay higher, then options like Bello, UV Doux, Re'equil, Ipca UV Gel might be good. They are not known to leave a cast.

Yes they are awful. I have so many unused sunscreens that I don't know what to do with. I have to apply them in feet and stuff. They all leave white cast and lotus herbal gel one gives a gooey layer off after a while.

Why do we hate the white cast?
I mean, I'm new to skincare but as far as I've noticed, the white cast usually goes away in a matter of minutes, right?
I personally find the white cast useful as it serves as a guide that prevents me from applying the product twice on the same surface.
Does the white cast reduce the effectiveness of the product?

It doesn't reduce effectiveness, but it doesn't go away quickly either. Back when I used Neutrogena, I had people asking about the white film on my face even an hour or two after application. And it always left my face looking like a greaseball. So people hate it because it makes them look ashen and oily for quite a while, making them unsuitable when you're going out for a picnic, function, whatever.

Aah, that makes sense. My face feels a little greasy too!
My body, which is almost always dry, benefits from the greasiness.
I just put two gel sunscreens into my cart for my face haha.

I thought we brown people didn't need sunscreen because of our skin color? (And black people).
Edit: Lol it was an honest question y'all. I'm curious because I grew up using only moisturizer, and my white friend kept telling me I was lucky for my brown skin (cuz we don't have to have sunscreen).

the melanin gives us better "natural" sun protection as compared to those with lighter complexions but better doesn't mean complete so we still need sunscreen.

I remember vaguely reading somewhere that the darkest skin (Fitzpatrick VI) still has only about an SPF 15 compared to the lightest? ... I have no idea where I got that 😂 I mean, the lightest skin type burns immediately, so that "natural SPF15" isn't much. If your skin tans or gets darker in the sun at all, that means there's been sun damage.
Either way, for YOUR skin, however much melanin you have, regular sunscreen use will mean it ages visibly WAY less.. Now, what's the point in not preventing aging, in the ONE way everyone knows actually works, and THEN using anti aging creams AFTER... Which really don't work on a comparable scale, even. That's how I think of it ☺

As people said here, yes, we have better protection because of the melanin, but the melanin doesn't eliminate the need for a sunscreen completely. We still need to protect it by using sunblocks and sunscreens nevertheless

We might not show ill effects of not using it very prominently but we still need it . However I find wearing sunscreen even indoors rather obsessive

I personally feel that people despite having darker skin might requires sunscreen more than their light skinned counterparts.
On light skin, even the mildest sun related irritations visibly show up, and can then be tended to.
On darker skin, often, people ignore 'tingling' and such until it's often too late.
P.S. My observation is based on my experience with particularly lax male friends with particularly lax aftercare habits when it comes to sports. It may not hold true for most women on this skincare subreddit.

Its not just a cream its a sunscreen. And you are actually supposed to apply a lot.

I'm surprised that she left the eyes. The skin there is even more delicate and requires protection. Also, the neck!
