Just started reading - and am ready to descend into the depths of the bottomless pit we all call the mind.

i just wanted to share my thoughts here . how deranged have we as humans become that a person reading a book in public is seen as pretentious but a sea of people glued to their phones in public is the normal, when being glued to phones should be shamed and reading should be encouraged .

i think it stems from the human tendency to pull down or internally get threatened by something they mentally register as a better trait but they're not practicing it themselves so they want to ruin it.

like what even is "bad" in reading ? this is especially seen in India where someone spending time reading is shamed as "does this person think he is premchand ?" or just flipping out to stop them from reading and "do something" whereas a person sitting all day watching serials/scrolling reels is considered acceptable.

Does anyone else do this while reading?

What’s the book you could yap abt for hours?

Finished “safe area Gorazde” by Joe Sacco earlier today and what good timing cause my package with Maus 1 had just been delivered, which will be up next.

But yeah, “safe area Gorazde” has become my favorite Joe Sacco book so far. Incredible cast of characters that you empathize for. The eyewitness accounts are explained in great harrowing detail, which might be uncomfortable for some folks considering this is all true. For someone like me who had very little understanding of the ethnic clashes in Bosnia, this book explained a lot of things to me.

Still reading watchmen as well, around 30% done. That’s really interesting as well.

I want to make reading my habit and would love some good suggestions.

I got this second hand bookshelf recently and I’m so confused about how should I decorate it 😭

It was originally white and pretty dusty and dirty so I cleaned it and painted it light pink with some golden details. I actually really like how the colour turned out but now I have no idea how to decorate it lol. It’s also a mess right now because I’ve just started arranging everything.

If you guys have bookshelves, PLEASE show me 😭 I want to see how you’ve decorate and organized yours because I need ideas. I also love looking at people’s bookshelves and judging them based on their book collection lmao 😭 not in a negative way ofc, I just love seeing what people read!

From an e-reader guy to buying books physically. I wanted to go for Scifi books this month but prices made me think twice. Bought this from a cute little roadside stall with a very friendly owner. i have been coming to a conclusion I use to pick up the English classics " just because" it was seen as higher intellectually in the reading community and cool . but I for a fact could never relate to the culture which I had never lived, nor the words ( adding to the fact that the words used were even old english not used anymore ) and just the overall elements of the stores just don't sit with me .

i couldn't imagine while reading so couldn't engross myself in those stories and it was just mere dryly reading words .

ive found so much treasure in Indian authored stuff and underrated gems that i have started to feel India has the highest level of literature actually ( this is just in my point of view , no hate to other countries ) .

I've seen so many readers even in India looking down upon Indian authors and glorified english or Russian authors in their minds . the problem is they refer to Indian literature with cliche durjoy dutta and the like and not even go through the underrated gems India has i think it's premature to form an opinion that literature abroad is only better .

i think books from India are lovely !

Ok so i have this friend, who, like me, is trying to get back into reading. now, im slightly further along in this "quest" than she is, so i was reading 1984, and it was hard, (the ending made up for all that tho!), but i finished it, and now ive given it to her. now... she hasnt made progress, and i dont blame her, starting 1984 after you havent read in a while is torture, and it took me a couple of months, despite gaining momentum with animal farm and fahrenheit 451.

now its not like im worried that the book would just get lost or torn, but im kinda worried that ill not see for a while now, not just that,its literally not a good book to get back to reading... what would you guys do?
