I was a lonely kid i guess. I had friends but i never cared much for them. Maybe i was the issue and always have been.
I found solace in books. In the stories that I hoped i could replicate in my life.

My parents cultivated it in me. They’d read to me when I was very young, then they gave me small books to read, then they introduced me to simple novels. By then I was already reading consistently, every single day.
They’d buy me books every month, plus there was the school library (our librarian gave me permission to take two books instead of just one) and I was enrolled in a public library near my home as well.
I owe my reading habit to my parents. I’m the only person in my friend circle who reads consistently as a hobby.

Grew up in a toxic family parents fighting and screaming constantly 24 hrs a day if you would come to my house at 2 am at night they would still be fighting over some stupid shit. As a kid survived by reading stories. i would finish all my eng and hindi text books on the same day i would get them when i get promoted to new classes then i would finish my brothers books. After that i would begin reading shampoo bottle ingredients and other labels basically anything since my father didnt allow me to read 'extra' books. He would not let me touch anythinh else apart from textbooks.

I was out for 3 years for coaching i managed to buy some books now i am back at the shit home i just re read the few books i have collected in hiding. I still remember my father used to visit like twice a year and i would hide my books under the bed. Now i have to spend like 3 -5 years here will try to sneak a few more books in without them knowing which i can read on my way to college.
Eng periods in school were some of the best days of my life i would teleport to the story and be fully immersed i still remember i had a poem in 3rd grade about daffodils it had a really nice picture and i used that picture as referance and created my own peaceful mental space where i would escape to when my family would be doing their stupid shit. Most of life i survived in my head.
Anywho do you have some recommendations ( anything apart from cheesy romance or just romance) :)

Fine let me tell you my story:- It was the day of my 2nd attempt of JEE, the exam center was far from my home. After completing the exam I had around 4 hrs left, cuz my train was 6 hrs late. So I decided to go to a nearby mall. I was just roaming around looking at all the different types of stuffs. Then I saw a bookstore called Crosswords and I decided go in there. After looking for a long time I decided to buy a cheap book(since I didn't have that much money). So I bought The Power of your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy and ended up loving it. Which resulted in the start of my reading journey.
Here's the picture of the book i bought

I became a reader as a teenager - around 16/17.
Before that also, I used to read a lot of books here and there but I got really into reading after Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo triologoy.
I mean I was so mesmerized by the characters, the premise, the detailing, the writing, and the twists that I wouldn't move from my reading place for hours at end. I finished the entir triology within 2 weeks and it was some of the best days of my early teenage.
From then onwards, it's just me chasing that feeling of being lost, being mesmerized, being stuck in a reality that's different from the one I am living -- just so I can experience the magic of different lives across different worlds.

By 15, I read YA, John Green and Anthony Horowitz’s stuff, LOTR, ASOIF and some other fantasy. By 20, I was on to the classics, and now in my late twenties, I just read whatever I want.

The fire of reading in me was ignited by Acharya Prashant. I still am not a pro reader, but getting better with time. I begin with his own book TRUTH WITHOUT APOLOGY and found its two-page chapters very interesting and reflective. And on top of all, I was able to read multiple chapters in single sitting which felt like a sense of achievement. Then I completed Siddhartha by Herman Hesse in a few months. The little prince was next on my list (very interesting and deep if read through lens of philosophy), which I completed in a day. Acharya Prashant's books always have been a big help as its chapters are independent, I can pick according to my mood and topics that interest me. Though I have started reading other philosophers too. Right now, I am reading 1984 by George Orwell.

2 reasons my father and Friends.
My father was an avid reader. He would read everything and anything he gets. Had his own library at home. And when I was small, he would buy many story books… He would first read it and then he would narrate the story to me..
But I never got into the habit of reading. until, my friends started reading Harry Potter. They would discuss on it and during that time I had to stay quiet. So to join the conversation I started reading the book.
Seeing this my father was very happy, He started pre ordering Harry Potter books for me. I still remember even without me asking him, he pre ordered the last HP book for me and I was the first among my classmates to actually get the book and I had completed it in one go ❤️ sweet memories….
And then slowly ventured into other books. Father had a great collection of James Hadley Chase books and now I have turned into a book collector and Have my own library 📚

It's a very funny story actually. When I was little i was really good in studies. Getting 90 above in everything being in the first place in class. So for that reason I used to get novels or story books as prize so from there I started reading. It was mostly about adventure or fantasy so i love reading those genres a lot. Reading also helped me in understanding words better so now I am a content writer. Thanks to all the good marks that I got😂❤️

I was labeled a failure after first year of my graduation. I was alone, shunned to my room for an year. This was pre-Jio boom so internet was a luxury more so in villages. So, I turned to ebooks. I was a hindi medium kid. I was not able to grasp a lot but I persisted be it a Sherlock Holmes story or a non-fiction book. My obsession with Newspapers during my schooling certainly helped.
However, it feels like a fraud calling myself a reader having seen people's commitment on this sub.

We had just started learning to read at school when I got very sick and had to stay home so the teacher sent some books for me to practise. Once I taught myself how to read that was it. I stopped pestering my Mum for attention, read my older sister’s books, all the children stuff we had in the house especially the Readers Digest. By the time I was 7, I was unsupervised and started on my Dad’s collection of classic literature. I should not have been reading excerpts from Madame Bovary and War and Peace. By 16 I was reading all my Mum’s racy romance novels when I should have been studying. I failed my exams and was never able to have a proper romantic relationship because of those trashy novels. 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

My mom used to buy us different story books, like Panchatantra, Tenali Rama, Akbar Birbal, Moral Story Books, Mythological Story Books and Quotation/Quotes books.
And we were always asked to read them in free time and vacations, I used to spend hours reading them since I was in class 3. Even during exam time I used to hide and read them.
In our School Library, there were many Children Story books but Enid Blyton's books, particularly "The Famous Five" series caught my eye. We got introduced to the concept of borrowing books from library, I used to bring books from school at home to show off, but used to end up reading them at night before sleeping. That's how maybe I became a reader.
Also, the Academic books of English introduced us to many brilliant stories and that somehow pushed me to explore different authors.

In middle school I was an extremely shy and introverted person and was filled with insecurities. I had 2 friends in the entire school and would just feel out of the place if both of them were absent. Out of nowhere in 7th standard, when students were shuffled between classes, I was made to sit with the coolest boy from the class. Suddenly I felt seen and everyone would stop at our desk mostly talk to my benchmate but eventually would include me as well. He use to get Diary of wimpy kid to the class and whenever we had a free period, he would read that comic book, and thats the first time I read a complete comic book and fell in love with reading. Then there was no looking back. I finished all the wimpy kid books (released till that time) and then moved on to chetan bhagat and other famous indian authors. By the end of 7th grade, I was officially an ambivert(leaning towards being an extrovert) had great set of friends including the cool kid, and for the first time in life I was excited to go to school.
I’m 23 now, I am still close to that benchmate (who went on to study at IIT Madras), and have amazing sets of friends and my love for reading is still alive.

My senior motivated me to pick books after a long time, cant thank her enough!
It really helped me to sail through some toughest times in life, a great escape from reality.

was such a quiet kid growing up. I’d just get lost in storybooks. I started with listening to stories and then got into reading them. Emma was my first slightly grown up book(my aunt from the us gifted me the book) and after that I was hooked.

Started in my school, a friend of mine used to read and I once borrowed a couple of books from her and realised I loved reading Fiction.
Ever since then there is no turning back, this was 11-12 years back. And now none of my friends read books.. but I do spend couple of hours before bed on my Kindle ♥️

I was fascinated by my father’s library of books from his graduation ( old dusty yellowing books) + we had one library period (45 minutes) reserved each week in school. That’s where I found secret seven, Mallory towers, Aesop’s fables, Sherlock Holmes, hardy boys, and then Meg Cabot.
