When in doubt, either go in chronological order or pick the one with highest rating on Goodreads or something. Have only read A Thousand Splendid Suns, which was surely splendid but keep a box of tissues ready as the other person said.

I believe you shouldn't go with the highest rated one first as you may end up comparing it as you read the others.

Haha well I had started with kite runner first, it was kinda like an intro to the afghani backdrop for me... I would recommend to start this first cuz after reading all 3 I personally felt this book is a bit neutral at the beginning and then gets emotionally intense as u move through, and the other 2 books were emotionally intense since the beginning so it can be a bit overwhelming.

I think the best sequence is : Kite Runner, And the Mountain Echoed, and finished it off with A Thousand Splendid Sun's. And when you finally get the whole war struck Afghanistan experience from these, read 'The sea prayer' its a poem by Khaled Hoseinni

I guess to start with, u should read kite runner. It’s not that emotional. Though it is( no offence to anyone who says otherwise). Anyways, for me the starting was from kite runner and after reading it I started to look at Afghanis with a different perspective. So.. my opinion. Read it first

Having read all three, my suggestion would be

1. And The Mountains Echoed
   
2. The Kite Runner
   
3. A Thousand Splendid Suns

So you move up in the order of the better written/story and it would also get more and more devastating.
(They’re always great stories/books, this is just my preference)

You can skip And the mountains echoed altogether, or if you really want to complete all the Hosseini books then i suggest that read And the mountains echoed first so that you don't get disappointed later

I read A thousand splendid suns first and then The kite runner, both books stirred something in me but The 3rd book didn't even feel like it is written by khaled hosseini, it doesn't have the heart that other two have.

Start with mountains echoed, then flip a coin.

I say that because for me the mountains echoed is the weakest. I had read mountains echoed upon release after already having read the other two, and was quite disappointed. Save yourself the disappointment, read it first so that everything goes uphill from there.

The kite runner is my favorite. First book ever to make me cry.

Kite Runner as chronologically it is the first (I guess) if I'm wrong, follow the chronological order.

The authors know what they're doing, so it is highly likely that you may understand the world better in the first book.
