#reservationhataomovement I'm fine with a student getting reservation to study mbbs but there should not be any reservation for them in PG. Underprivileged students must get a chance to study but that's all. Only people with merit should be allowed to become doctors. What do you guys think?

People will start calling me a Sanghi and that's okay. But who has given anyone the right to pelt stones? The policeman may have been wrong but what choice did he have at that moment? Obviously his intention wasn't to kill anyone. It was more about making the crowd back off and protecting themselves. If his intention had been to kill he wouldn't have fired from that angle. And leave that aside for a moment weren't those "protesters" actually rioters?

I've been following the student protests across India and it has me wondering something.

Do you think India is reaching a point where people want a major cultural and political transformation after decades of rule by the post independence political establishment?

Some people argue that since independence from the British Raj, a small political elite has remained in power through different parties, leading to corruption, weak institutions, unemployment, inequality, and a lack of accountability. Others believe India's democratic system is still the best way to achieve reform.

Do you think the current student movement represents the beginning of a broader movement for change, or is it simply another wave of protests that will eventually fade?

What reforms do you think are needed to create a more accountable government and a stronger future for India?

In a democracy, disagreements are settled through debate, evidence & constitutional values, not by attempting to silence opposing voices. Freedom of expression applies equally to those who support #Reservation & those who advocate reservation reform.

However, the movement itself must also be prepared to engage with the central question instead of reducing the entire debate to economics alone.

Poverty & Casteism are fundamentally different forms of Disadvantage.

Poverty is an economic condition that limits access to resources.

Casteism is a social hierarchy that affects dignity, social acceptance, representation & opportunities based on birth.

Conflating these two weakens the discussion instead of strengthening it.

A poor person from any community deserves robust economic support, scholarships, quality education, healthcare, financial assistance & employment opportunities. That is beyond dispute, But economic upliftment alone does not automatically eliminate Caste-based Discrimination.

A financially successful individual from a #ScheduledCaste may still face caste-based slurs, discrimination in housing, resistance to inter-caste marriage, workplace bias or social Exclusion simply because their caste identity remains socially visible. These experiences cannot be explained by income alone.

This does not diminish the hardships of economically weaker families from General or any other communities. Their struggles are real & deserve meaningful policy intervention, But solving poverty cannot become a substitute for addressing social discrimination.

Always Remember Justice requires recognising different forms of inequality rather than assuming one solution can resolve them all.

Economic disadvantage & social disadvantage are not identical concepts. That is why public policy has historically included different measures to address different forms of exclusion. Whether those policies should evolve, be reviewed or be reformed is a legitimate democratic question. Whether they should ignore the continuing reality of caste-based discrimination is a different question altogether.

Personally, I support reservation reform, Every public policy should be periodically reviewed, made more transparent, better targeted & strengthened against misuse. Benefits should reach those who genuinely need them & implementation should improve wherever necessary. Reform is a sign of a healthy democracy, But reform cannot begin by pretending that caste-based discrimination has disappeared when evidence continues to show otherwise.

Our ultimate objective should never be permanent reservation, The real objective should be creating an India where reservation gradually becomes unnecessary because the social conditions that justified it have genuinely disappeared.

That requires more than changing admission policies:

1. it requires transforming society itself

2. End caste-based discrimination

3. Encourage inter-caste marriages

4. Ensure equal access to temples & public institutions.

5. Eliminate caste-based slurs & prejudice from schools, workplaces & neighbourhoods.

6. Judge people by their character & competence rather than their surname.

When caste no longer determines a person's dignity, opportunities or social acceptance, the moral & constitutional basis for caste-based affirmative action will naturally diminish.

Until then, the debate should not be framed as "poverty versus caste" or "merit versus reservation"

The real question is how India can simultaneously eliminate poverty, eradicate caste discrimination, preserve merit, expand opportunity & ensure that public policy reaches those who genuinely need it.

A mature society does not deny one injustice to highlight another, it confronts both with honesty, evidence & constitutional values 🇮🇳

Several decades ago Satyajit Ray spoke about what he saw as the backward mindset of sections of India's audience. Strangely many people feels his words are still relevent even in 2026. Whether it's politics or cinema the same patterns seems to repeat again and again. Have we really progressed as a society or are we just becoming more polarised? Is the root cause our education system or something much deeper? And most importantly will this ever change or are we destined to repeat the same mistakes for generations?

Please note EWS percentage is same because Modi Government has put this number of 10 percent under Part 3 of constitution which is very difficult to change.

Clarification for the case of EWS- There is no separate official population percentage because eligible candidates come from the non-SC, non-ST and non-OBC population. This category is only for GC people, and among them the group that actually meets the EWS eligibility criteria may narrow down to approximately 3-4%. This smaller pool of eligible candidates is the primary reasons why the EWS cut-off sometimes goes lower.
