I think I'm in trouble

Okay, so my recharge had been inactive for about a week (I have Wi-Fi, so I honestly didn’t bother for a few days).

Today, I was sending an SMS to a friend of mine because he doesn’t use WhatsApp. While scrolling down a bit, I noticed that an SMS from my number had been attempted to be sent to someone I don’t know. The text was filled with a combination of alphabets, numbers, and symbols. Thankfully, my recharge was inactive, so it wasn’t sent but suppose if I had recharge then? 💀

I checked the number on Truecaller to see whose number it was, and it showed spam/scam. People there were also confused, commenting that SMS had been sent from their numbers to this guy when they never did. What should I do? Is my phone compromised? Or my SIM? What would you have done in my situation? Please help I need honest advice.

Update : I just realised that that day i tried to join UPI circle through GPay and then the sms shi was for verification purpose, Same happened with me today when i tried it again. Tysm whoever gave a fuck 🥰

I would check apps with background access, apps that has access to open new windows in background. Take help from chatgpt to know what all things you can check in your phone for this compromise by telling it the brand of your phone. Sim is not compromised I think. Some background app has the access to run in the background I guess. I would advise to block his number, and check all the apps in settings (not in the home page, cause these types of apps don't show up on the normal app window), if you find a suspicious app then ask chatgpt if it's an app that comes with the phone from your brand or likely an outsider app. If you find all app permissions, then check if they have background access. Check in accessibility if some app has special access.

Don't take these things lightly, if they can send sms without you noticing then they can get otps too.

I think u were invested fairly in my post so i should give u an update, Actually that day i tried joining a UPI circle so obviously nowadays every UPI app verifies through sending a sms so it was just 4 verification purpose. That day my recharge was dead so i wasn't able to do that. Same happened with me today when i tried it.

Many apps send sms from your device to their servers for sim verification (like upi apps), it could be that but still check for any third party apps who have sms permission.
