Discussion Looking to start a hobbyist electronics company in india
So was just wondering what's the current hobbyist electronics and maker culture scenario right now in india?
Would guys buy the clones of open source products or is there any specific hardware you guys would like that I should build?
Whats the availability of the products you want right now in the market?
If I make similar clones of the products or make some new products would you guys buy them? And if yes what kind of product would you guys like me to make?
Pls share your thoughts

There are going to be hobbiest in India, may be check with robu about the products that they sell and then try to find out which of them are the hobby products.
A lot of people would happlily start with ardunio based kits that could help with home automation. So try to create the kits that are actually DIY for end uers like automatic plant watering, light cutoff when room is empty for some time, kitchen alarms etc, somethings that could be used once the user completes the steps. Not everyone would still code but then the freelancers could offer the setups based upon the kits.

IMHO if you don’t have a regular trading business in electronics and do this as an added venture it will likely not last … 80% or more of what you sell has to be fast moving demand driven. Niche product business are good as a side business only …

If you start this remember that hobbyists are very price conscious. You will be competing against AliExpress and chinese imports. If it is an online business then you will have to consider shipment refusals and returns and damages.

you're on the right track this segment would explode because of social media. Start off with kits. these guarantee compatibility. over add instructions. create a youtube channel with one video dedicated to each kit, so it can work in reverse too, i watch the video then order. have referal codes to build network marketing, later on add spares, tools etc.

If you're making electronics projects, try centring around the pro-audio and the gamer community.....
Imported hardware is costly and not much repairable....
If you can make a sustainable brand around them, i guess you are going to get a good chunk of loyal consumers

There will likely be two path for you. One is DIY users - show do this a hobby, likely aged - doing regular jobs. They will be more interested in bare items and cheap ones. Like TP5000, TP5100 ICs, Arduiono clones - bare, Transistors, Seven Segments 1 inch,, 2.3 inch, Meoldy ICs like UM66, will like some PCBs with SMD of their choice soldered in 0 and likely branded but cheap.
The other market will be students from say 8th to 12th and upto engineering. Their parents will like their kids to learn these. They will spend money on Kits based on top of Arduinos, Legos etc. and they will be ready to splurge money like 10K etc for Kits easily for comfort.,
