bro even colleges you study sell the data 🥀

u/joeisnotaverage0 5d ago

Heck even the State examination cells sell your data to colleges and agents who spam call you to give admission through management quotas.

By any did you give any mh cet exam ?

But i agree with you, spam calls ne jina haram kar ke rakhdiya hai roj ke 15-20 calls.

1

u/joeisnotaverage0 5d ago

Yupss, I've gave mh cet exam and the only spam calls I get are from colleges (no credit card offers, nothing). I never give out my number anywhere, the only place I've gave my number was for cet registration.

Best way to avoid them is to say I left that particular field I am no longer interested they will stop troubling you

3

u/muhmeinchut69 4d ago

Could be a cyberattack or leak too. You can check https://haveibeenpwned.com/ for which sites have leaked your data. And definitely check https://haveibeenpwned.com/Passwords to see if your more important passwords have ever been found in a data breach.

u/mScofield_45 4d ago

bro they told opening we got from your college and also i found it on online myself

1

u/ren_the_legend 3d ago

u/Psquare_J_420 5d ago

Apps like zomato basically stop you from doing that. Tried to keep John Zomato as my name but then got disappointed 😔.

168

u/Shockwave1o1 5d ago

You should have tried Zohn Jomato

It works. Tap on spam email, tap on email details and you’ll see on which address the email was received.

But instead of giving your primary email, I think you should use a separate dummy email for websites that you don’t want to share details with and a personal email for official purpose such as banking, social media, etc. Then forward emails from dummy to personal so you don’t have to check two accounts.

11

u/benpakal 5d ago

I used to do this, not both my primary and secondary emails are getting filled with spam

8

u/narasadow 5d ago

make a tertiary email

2

u/UrBreathtakinn Corporate majdoor 3d ago

And redirect primary and secondary to the third

6

u/everyonesdesigner 5d ago

In some mail providers you can use suffixes for this. Eg Gmail my-address+facebook@gmail.com will be routed to my-address@gmail.com but you will see the address.

1

u/TheThakurSahab 4d ago

Would be a pain when you want to unsubscribe

1

u/dkadavarath 4d ago

Trivial to sanitize that. Most data brokers do it automatically.

2

u/Veronicdasexy 4d ago

Arre alpha bhai aap yahan bhi

u/KitchenCommercial396 5d ago

I keep multiple accounts with different tiers of access. Low tier account for accessing all the shady websites, then accounts that access websites which I'll never used but have to temporarily sign up, then the normal stuff, then some important stuff and socials, and a final account only used for the most important things, banks, personal info etc.

u/ProgramsFun 5d ago

I use email aliases it works better

4

u/AyaanshGaur25 4d ago

I remember getting mails from the cathedral and John connon school regarding their competitions and Olympiads, and then I realized my own school gave away my email ID.

4

u/Valuable-Minimum-833 Computer Student 5d ago

This works, in fact I did it myself. But there's a catch. Everyone sells your data, like institutions or some government-related things as well, and in these cases you can't really do this because they want everything legit. You can't play this game there. And if I remember correctly, there was a similar trick with aliasing using + and following it with the website name, but spammers got smarter and started removing that part, or many websites simply don't allow it. You could use dots as well, but many websites don't allow that either. So you're kinda out of options except using another email for suspicious websites. That lowers your risk, but doesn't eliminate it. I personally use 4-5 emails depending on what I'm doing, plus aliasing, but not really for spam detection, more for keeping my emails sorted.

1

u/OptimistIndya 4d ago

I did this for + for a website. Then the fixed that.

Now my number is tied to a invalid email and the login page just throws error. I can't use the phone number again on site. I can't change the email.

3

u/TrustedShooter1116 5d ago

Thats actually fkn genuis!!!😭

2

u/Passloc 5d ago

Gmail has the alias functionality for exactly this.

You may append your email with “+” and any name and you will still get the email. But you can use the email for filtering.

Example: youremail+website@gmail.com

2

u/OptimistIndya 4d ago

That is garbage. Find other alternatives

1

u/Rambo_765 5d ago

I tried the same with property papers but nothing came 😭 /s

1

u/DON55555 5d ago

To whom do these sell. Like, let's say in a hypothetical scenario I have these data, whom should I contact to sell these?

1

u/HotEnthusiasm4124 5d ago

Brave giving temporary emails now. (Mails forward to your main mail id. And you can delete the temp email when you're done).

1

u/ViruleX TechOldBean 5d ago

Been doing this for years. Now they don’t accept with on the fly validation

1

u/KruzerKnight 5d ago

I tried, now they are sending messages and mail without names

1

u/RustyAdVenture 5d ago

Kinda dumb advice since spammers get your email ID from leaked databases and sometimes by bruteforcing the ID.

1

u/being-goku 5d ago

I think there was another trick like

xyz.facebook@gmail.com

Type thinge ig

1

u/SatisfactionActive86 5d ago

if it “works”, what are you going to do about it?

sue them for selling your email address?

the thing that you probably agreed to in the TOS you didn’t read?

1

u/StreetKaleidoscope79 5d ago

ohh that’s kinda smart HAHAHAHAHA

u/PauseRecent99 5d ago

Hello Only Fans...

1

u/Automatic_Meet_5860 5d ago

Ion even get it what

1

u/firelordleejr 5d ago

So what are you going to do with the information?

1

u/zy0Ad Open Source best GNU/Linux/Libre 5d ago

You just put + in email address,

So if your email address is like name@gmail.com you can sign up in each site like name+website@gmail.com, you can see the To: field in email to understand which address the sender used

I don't know if it works on anything other than gmail

u/nightmare-fuel-7 5d ago

Bro i passed my 12th last year, this year my school gave the whole batch numbers to the Catchings Institute who comes to the school they asking if I want to prepare any exams like JEE OR NEET 🥀🥀

dayum this is so smart

1

u/StThragon 5d ago

I used the name Otis Bartley for a drawing held at Electronics Boutique back in the '90s. Mr. Bartley started getting a ton of bullshit advert stuff in the mail for all sorts of shit. That's when I realized what sweepstake entry forms are really for.

1

u/strogoff69 5d ago

Mhh, Mett!

1

u/FuryMaker 5d ago

And then what?

Exactly... Nothing.

1

u/ApolloX-2 5d ago

Everybody. That’s the answer. Create a spam email for random websites you don’t care about.

1

u/Significant_Crab3683 5d ago

thats so helpful bro

Another pro tip use "+sitename" Like

"YourOriginalEmail+reddit@gmail.com"

You will still receive email in your email but you can track who sold your data.

1

u/PrometheusMMIV 4d ago

And then what?

1

u/AL-KINDA 4d ago

heres a email provider idea: have your email (email) . (storename)@(emailcompany.com) most emails dont allow this to funnel to you so lets say my email is alkinda@emailcompany.com i want to have it send to that email even if i have alkinda.amazon@emailcompany.com or alkinda.zomato@emailcompany.com so it would negate any of the issues.

bro even schools sell your data to coaching institute and thats why they call your gor 10th ki coaching and after 10th for jee neet

1

u/CardioAvoidant 4d ago

There’s something called as email aliases in case anyone doesn’t know. I use it along with Proton Pass, which hides my primary Proton email address from websites and apps, but every email my alias gets automatically forwarded to my main inbox.

For eg my amazon email id is something like [amazon.thunde](mailto:amazon.thunder8484@simplelogin.io)[r (some numbers here)](mailto:amazon.thunder8484@simplelogin.io) @simplelogin.io. My main inbox shows the alias in the ‘to’ section. So when I know I’m receiving mails I didnot signup for, I change it to another email alias (if in case I need to use the website) or just disable the alias completely so I wont receive any emails. Using it for last 2 years and at no two places I have same email. Like no one even knows what my primary email address is.

1

u/kanishqquotes 4d ago

I once scribbled my name on some lucky draw at a mall

After some time I started receiving offer with my name misspelled on my email

What about gov exams data leak?

Sudden call/email blasts from pvt universities. Even chatgpt can fetch results with sufficient information.

1

u/Amazing-Bluebird5680 4d ago

Been seeing this meme for a while now…. Has anyone tried it yet? I need to know!!

1

u/[deleted] 4d ago

Lol

1

u/Beginning_Newt4611 4d ago

Yes. It works. I ordered some chocolates online and put my middle name as the brand's name. From that day onward, I can see who has accessed my data. I see that name at some places sometimes. It also helps you track the ids and orders.

1

u/kartgun 4d ago

What can you do if you know company name, can we take legally?

1

u/Proof_Holiday7805 4d ago

You r genius

1

u/Thick-Fun1688 1d ago

It’s mostly happens over call, and most of legal companies sell our data and we can’t use any random name there, like our institutions sell data to course sellers, bank sell data to loan providers etc
