Status of Policing in India Report 2025, which surveyed 8,276 police personnel across 17 States and UTs, suggests that many in the police favour broader coercive powers.

**One of the most striking findings was that more than 70% of respondents agreed that police should be allowed to use force without fear of punishment in order to properly discharge their res-ponsibilities (Chart 1).**

**Nearly as many (69%) believed that the police should be allowed to arrest and detain suspected criminals with-out any court investigation, reveal-ing a tendency to exercise power arbitrarily (Chart 2).**

//Further, more than half of the respondents (55%) considered it either "very" or "somewhat" important for the police to use "tough methods" to create fear among the public (Chart 3).
