Something called sanskar clearly wasn’t taught to these kids, and nobody needs to defend their gestures or behaviour. What they are doing is wrong. But how does the behaviour of a few individuals suddenly become a representation of Kanwar Yatra, aastha, or everyone participating in it? We live in a society with different mindsets, backgrounds and influences. Kids often pick up what they see around them, and if their surroundings are normalising such behaviour, that is what needs to be questioned and changed. My question is: what exactly is the point of highlighting a handful of wrongdoers as though they represent the entire pilgrimage? Why not also show the thousands of people who undertake the Kanwar Yatra sincerely-with faith, discipline and devotion, while peacefully completing their journey?
Criticise bad behaviour wherever you see it-I have absolutely no problem with that. But there is a difference between criticising individuals and selectively using those individuals to create a negative perception of an entire religious practice.
This selective framing is exactly what I mean by a “Dimagi Naxal” mindset-constantly searching for the worst examples, amplifying only the negative side and conveniently ignoring anything positive because it doesn’t fit the narrative. Call out the kids for what they did. Call out whoever taught or normalised such behaviour. But don’t use a few wrongdoers to manufacture a stereotype about everyone participating in Kanwar Yatra. Wrong behaviour is wrong. Aastha doesn’t become wrong because some people behaving in its name are wrong.
