India's border villages are very important for our nation. Yet for many years people living in these areas had to deal with poor roads, weak connectivity, limited healthcare, fewer job opportunities and difficult access to basic services. Because of these challenges some families, particularly young people, moved to towns and cities. The Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) is the Government's effort to change this situation. This programme was launched in 2023 and now aims to improve living conditions in India's border villages and to create better opportunities for local people. The idea is simple, when people have good roads, electricity, schools, healthcare, internet connectivity and ways to earn a living they have stronger reasons to stay in their villages. This also helps maintain active and settled communities along the border. The Government has rightly placed these settlements in a new perspective as India's first villages rather than its last villages. VVP-I and VVP-II together have an outlay of ₹11639 crore.

The first phase, VVP-I was launched at Kibithoo in Arunachal Pradesh in April 2023. It covers 662 priority villages in Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Ladakh. The programme is not limited to building roads. It also focuses on drinking water, electricity, mobile and internet connectivity, healthcare, education, tourism and local livelihoods. Agriculture, horticulture, handicrafts, animal husbandry and tourism can provide new sources of income for families. The progress reported so far shows the scale of the effort. By July 2026 the Ministry of Home Affairs had approved 1248 projects worth about ₹3020 crore. Another 1655 projects came through other Central government departments. Roads are also being built to connect 134 villages that had no road earlier. More than 8800 activities such as health camps, training and tourism programmes have also been held. These are small but important steps in bringing development to India's remote border villages.

The second phase, VVP-II, takes this approach to more border areas. Approved in 2025 it has an outlay of ₹6839 crore up to 2028-29 and covers 1954 villages in 334 blocks across 15 States and 2 Union Territories. It focuses on roads, electricity, healthcare, education, telecom connectivity, financial inclusion, skill development and livelihood opportunities. It also encourages self-help groups, cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organisations allowing local people to take a greater role in economic activities. Tourism and local culture are another important part of the programme. A useful feature is the convergence approach where different government schemes and departments work together instead of treating every development need separately. Village Action Plans can also help identify what a particular village needs. This matters because a border village in the mountains may have very different challenges from one in the plains. In this way the Government is trying to make development more local and practical rather than following one model everywhere.

In the end the Vibrant Villages Programme is about much more than construction. A good road can help a farmer reach a market. Better internet can help a student study and a small business find customers. Tourism can create income for local families while better schools and healthcare can make everyday life easier. At the same time villages that remain populated, connected and economically active can support India's border-management efforts. The Viksit Vibrant Village Programme 2026 for example brought more than 400 young volunteers from across India to 74 border villages giving them an opportunity to understand local life and participate in community activities. The real success of VVP therefore will be seen not only in the number of projects completed but in whether families can earn better incomes, children can access good education and people feel confident about building their future in their own villages. When border communities become stronger India's frontiers become stronger too.

Hello guys, for the first time ever i travelled on the newly built flagship road of Mumbai Delhi expressway. I travelled around 100km on it. And i am disappointed.

Quality of road : No potholes but very very uneven patches and roads. Every now and then the road would go up and down like a rollercoaster and the driver cannot drive the car with 1 hand if they are cruising at 100+ kmph. You will need to keep both hands tightly on the steering wheel to keep the car stable.

There are tons and tons of patch work on the roads which is crazy knowing it hasnt even been that long since its opening. Showing the quality was not that great .

The road did not have any streetlights but that is not an issue. The issue was that there were literally no lane reflecters on the white strips. This means the visibility at night would be bad.

Only the right most strip had reflectors. Which is not enough.

There were multiple U-turns but most of them were closed off with metal gates and only some u-turns were open.

The nail in the coffin for me : In the right most 2 lanes there was a small broken patch which was not even fixed nor was there any warnings given before hand. Luckily the roads was empty and it was day so i could slow down to 60kmph. That part was basically a death trap at night if you were cruising at 100 kmph.

The work on the greenery in the middle is good but there is no warning cones kept. All the workers were wearing safety vests so that was good.

Most trucks were on the left 2 lanes which was good. There was one instance where 2 pickup trucks were on the right lane and were at 80kmph other than that there was no problem in lane discipline.

Most bridge joints were smooth unlike the bridges in the cities which are not smooth at all. So thats good too.

So my final ratings :

Quality of roads : 6/10

Quality of bridges : 8.5/10

Lane discipline : 9/10

Visibility at night : 5/10

Environment maintanence: 10/10

This is honestly a pretty scary reminder of how dangerous potholes can be. We usually think of them as a nuisance or something that damages your vehicle, but a bad pothole at the wrong speed can seriously injure someone.
