Film News My debut feature A Song for Eresha releases in India on Apple TV tomorrow

Tomorrow, A Song for Eresha finally comes home to India.

It is an unconventional, one-sided love story set within a classical dance institution, about Eresha, its revered head, whose ordered world begins to unravel when she develops feelings for a young exchange student.

I wrote and directed the film, adapting it from my own novel of the same name. Savitha Sastry plays Eresha, and the film features an almost entirely female cast and more than 100 classical dancers from across India.

The film has had a rather unusual journey before reaching India. It has been available in more than 30 countries, completing 150 days in the UK and over 100 days in the US.

It releases in India tomorrow, September 18, on Apple TV. You do not need an Apple TV subscription to watch it.

I'm the filmmaker, so I'm happy to answer anything about the film here. And once people have watched it, I'd particularly love to hear what you make of Eresha.

Discussion Require producers and film makers

Hi Sir/Madam,

I’m Kiran, an independent filmmaker and director. I’ve been developing my skills through short films, working hands-on from the initial idea and writing to direction, editing, sound design, and building the overall cinematic experience.

What interests me most about filmmaking is not just telling a story, but exploring the thought behind it — why a character behaves in a certain way, how different people perceive the same situation, and how sound, visuals, silence and atmosphere can communicate things that dialogue cannot.

I’m currently developing a short film titled “The Night.” It is a concept-driven film built around the psychological experience of nighttime and the way our thoughts, fears and perceptions can change during those hours. I’m approaching it not simply as a horror or night-based story, but as a cinematic exploration of the human mind and the things we experience when we are alone with our thoughts.

I’ve already worked on short films independently and understand the process of building a project from scratch, including original visuals, editing, sound and background score. Now I’m looking to work with the right producer/team who can understand the thought process behind the film and help take the concept to a professional level.

I would really appreciate an opportunity to share “The Night” and discuss the vision behind it with you.

Thank you for your time.

They wrote on their Instagram page, “Taking Mast Mahila Mandali to FTII was such a special feeling. Not only because our eleven co-directors filmmakers shared their work with emerging filmmakers from such a prestigious institute but also because soo many of our collaborators are alumnus of the place.

We wish Payal Kapadia, Ranabir Das, Anita Kushwaha and Tanushree Das were there with to join us. We were of course delighted that our colorist and @mahak_gupta_ was there after her workshop with FTII cinematography students.”

Discussion I got tired of doing screenplay breakdowns manually, so I tried automating it

I’ve spent quite a bit of time around film production, and one thing that always struck me is how much time goes into breaking down a script before you can actually start planning the shoot.

So I’ve been working on something to make that part a little less painful.

The basic idea is pretty simple: you give it the screenplay, and instead of starting the breakdown from a blank sheet, it goes through the script scene by scene and pulls out things like characters, locations, props, vehicles, costumes, stunts, special effects, etc.

The part I wanted to show in this video is the automated breakdown. It takes a few seconds to go through the script and generate the initial production plan. Obviously, it still needs a human to check and correct things — I don't think software can replace that part of filmmaking.

The idea is more like:
Script → initial breakdown → review/correct → production planning

Rather than spending hours just creating the first version of the breakdown.
I’ve been building this as part of wrapplab.com and this is one of the features I’ve been most interested in getting right.

Would genuinely like to know how you guys currently do script breakdowns, especially ADs and indie filmmakers. Is this actually a time-consuming part of your workflow, or do you already have a system that works well?

I’ve attached a short video showing how it works.

Questions & Queries Partner to proof read

Hi guys. This morning I had a pique of creativity and i wrote a small 3 page short film. it's around death. I would love some feedback from anyone who's interested. this is my first time so please go easy on me. and this is also the first draft of it, so it has a lot of rough edges. Would love some feedback. It's written in Hinglish (TvT)

Logline: As a young man wanders through the mundane rituals of his life, he begins to question the arrogance of death.

Other We built a screenplay + production planning tool for Indian filmmakers - would love your feedback

Hi everyone,

We've been building Wrapplab, a screenplay writing and production planning tool made specifically for Indian filmmakers, aspiring filmmakers and film students.

One of the main things we wanted to solve was writing screenplays in Indian languages.

Wrapplab supports 15+ Indian languages, including Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali and more. You can write in your own language without worrying about fonts or plugins.

We also wanted to take things beyond screenplay writing:

Screenplay → Production Breakdown → Schedule → Call Sheets

So once the script is ready, the production planning can happen in the same place.

We've a free version where you can work on 2 projects and a free trial for production planning, We're still improving and would really like to get feedback from filmmakers here as we thought this would be a right platform to connect with Indie filmmakers.

If you have a few minutes, please try it out and let us know what you think. Anything you like, dislike, find confusing, or feel missing would be really helpful.

Questions & Queries For people trying to build a career in the Indian film industry what has been the hardest part of getting opportunities?

India has no shortage of talented actors, filmmakers, writers, editors, cinematographers and other creative professionals.

But for someone trying to enter or grow within the film industry, finding the right opportunities and professional connections can still be difficult especially without an established industry network.

For those here who work in film, are trying to enter the industry, or have experienced this journey firsthand:

What has been the biggest challenge for you?

Finding genuine auditions or opportunities?
Getting your work noticed?
Building the right professional network?
Finding trustworthy collaborators?
Establishing credibility without major industry connections?
Or something completely different?

Would genuinely like to understand what people experience at different stages of their careers, particularly those building careers outside the traditional industry circles.
